Which makes the better dog?
What would you rather have in a young dog with 30 nights alone?
1] young dog gets treed on every track but misses about 30%
2] young dog only gets treed on about 60% of the tracks she starts but usually has the coon.

Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything!!!

People accuse me of being color blind. The truth is I will hunt red ones, blue ones, black and white ones, yellow ones, black and tan ones, or even brindle ones; Just as long as they are English!
Hard to tell.If the first dog has a visible coon in 7 outta 10 trees I'd sure take it.Its a lot easier to train a young dog that will get treed. If dog 2 is starting a lot of tracks and not finishing them could be running stuff that don't climb....Just a thought
#2
I've spent a lot of nights in the woods watching young dogs beat tracks to death, but in my experience once they start putting the pieces together and you get in and catch em treed when they throw that locate and get em to stay put then it's praise and fur. Then the faster they get with experience and the accuracy stays. Seen a lot start that way and end up winning hunts by getting under a coon and lonely.

I'll take curtain number 2 Alex! I'm not convinced that accuracy improves all that much myself

I will take dog one and keep a switch handy

A little more info. about these 2 young dogs.
Both are good stayput treedogs but dog 1 pulls the trigger fast and has a knack for just locating and falling treed sometimes and has the coon, she also misses quite often but is gettin the message that i dont like that much and with a little scolding will go on and finish the track.
Dog 2 is more accurate but is more of a trailing type dog, last time out she worked a nice track up through the woods and located on a tree a couple times but wasnt sure, opened back on the ground a couple times then back on the tree and eventually trailed away, we snuck in and the tree she left had a kit in it, she eventually got treed 50 yards away with another kit and stayed but if there is more track on the ground she is movin on.
Given equal opportunity, which one of these 2 young dogs finishes into the best hound?

I guess you could look at it that way but 3 out of 10 is probably about average. If a dog is quiting track 4 out of 10 times I could not handle that. That means there is no chance of a coon being there if they don't get treed.
You can work on a dog that trees slick but a dog that doesn't have the desire to get treed or finish a track just doesn't work for me.
I would still go with #1. I've seen the ones that tree the last one and there not a lot of fun.

If you decide number 2. Send #1 to me please Your describing what I want. I want one to slam that ol tree and be there. If its got 70% right now. I'll tree just as many if not more than most folks.

I'll take the one that's treeing coons 70% of the time and finishing every track.
JMO, But then quiting tracks is one thing I don't like.

Ya have to get treed to score a coon because you sure in the heck aren't going to catch them on the ground all nite long! Young hounds get better with age and hunt time but all that trailing from the start and no trees!! Not for my likings! #1 for sure!! If ya want a winner at the end!!

I have been hunting now for about 25 years. I can say I have probably hunted with over 100 gr.nites. 2 world chmps. A bunch of pkc platnium champions and gold champs. Owned some pretty nice hounds and hunted with a bunch. I started keeping a NO EXCUSSES chart of how accurate some of my hounds were. Now that is takin times my dogs covered on trees where no coons were seen, den trees, ceder trees, obvious slicks ect. IT WILL MAKE YOU SICK. Think about it in a compititon hunt in my area a dog that is cut loose with 3 strikes in a 2 hour cast and is 2 for 3 will usually give a score of around 3-400 plus. Thats 66% if the one shined was circles and that will win about 90% of cast in my area. I did a % chart on how accurate 2 wld hunt cast and all the 4 super stakes cast. these are the final 4 everyone wants to be in and the dogs averaged out to be 39%. 50% is dang accurate over a one year period. 70% is WORLD CLASS.
2 different dogs
Dog 1 can be "switched" off the slick trees and get more accurate. Dog 1 will be a winner in thick coon ( like in the north). Tree 4-6 coon a night. Look bad in thin coon areas, too many plank trees, or no treeing at all.
Dog 2 will probably get better at tracking with time and be very accurate. In thick coon this dog will look bad, locating and trailing on and on. But in the thin coon areas, this dog will look real good treeing 1 or 2 a night.
