independant

I know in the mountains it can be a headache going to dogs that are split up. Just trying to keep track of them in a bad deal

IMO their is no such thing as being too independent as long as they will go on and get hooked somewhere deep and lonely. I like them to be dead loners and wouldn't even consider hunting one that wasn't split at least 60% of the time.

Posted by POTOMAC on 09-20-2013 08:56 PM:

The perfect reason to only hunt one dog at a time when pleasure hunting or that you are handling then all you have to do is go to your dogs tree!!! Be a lot better hounds being bred if they all hunted alone!!! Jmo

Posted by GA DAWG on 09-20-2013 09:01 PM:

Yall just wait till you get one that will not tree with anything period. You'll see to independent ain't good. It can be a fault. I've had 2 like that.

My kind of dog would be one that , if he has nothing going , would come and take EVERY track away from the other dogs and smoke them to the tree !
And then listen to them whine about my "me too" dog. LOL

I got one that wont hunt with strange dogs. I personally don't like one that wants to get away from all the other dogs especially up here in these hills. Dexter is fine if he trees first but if another dog trees first he has trouble backing them unless it's my other dog Briar.
To Each His Own I guess.

I have one now like that and she was born that way from day one she never has and I would bet until she's gone she never will and I love it that way!!! Of course she is one that I think I can win with see as I'm no professional handler I'm a dog man and when these guys start calling my dog and these counterfeit me toeing dogs come like a magnet it just takes me out of my game and more times than not I lose my dog the cast cause of my mistake not there's !!! It sucks but it's the truth and I know it !, so I will take my chances and live or die by a loner!!!!!jmo and I do not pack hunt I start thrum alone and only hunt one dog at a time so I like it and I'm not talking about one that runs a mile to get away from other dogs before they start hunting either

Loners are fun to hunt , when they are in their own custom built scenario .

Pros:
-Easier to handle a dog that strikes and trees off to itself
-no competition in other dogs or calling contest with other handlers(no pressure)
- having a garaunteed 125 or 100 tree points
- nothing like having a dog split from the pack with its own coon, quite the rush

Cons:
- they live by the sword and die by the sword
- they will lose as many casts by being loners as they will win bein loners
- they usually pass up coons just to get alone
- they worry more about being alone then treeing coon

I may get crucified next time I see people I know for this but it's true . I've hunted with both and owned both . I'd much rather a dog pack and split at the best times . I'm not talking a piece of everyone's and all of my own coon ... I hate that style .. But if there's a coon right in front of me I want mine to be there if it happened to be struck on the same track .

I'm more Into the type of dog that's worried about treeing coon as fast as it can instead of getting 3-500 yards deeper from the rest and then hunting . When you have a good one, I mean a really nice one you won't need them to be alone every time to get first tree they will fill up a card with first trees .

May 31, 2013 I paid my last entry fee with Dexter. I will be the man that feeds him his last meal before he dies of old age but you just can't comp. hunt with him. I'll be putting Briar in the ring now.

independent

Believe me you will win way more cast than you lose with an indepedent dog...mine unless you drop him right out on a coon will absolutely not be with dogs , probably split 90% of the time if he's with something becaause they covered him. Most his pups they same way even as six month olds , a little harder to train in the beginning but winners & true coondogs in the end.

You may hit a streak with an independent loner type hound and win a bunch of casts in a row . But truth it those type rarely put up the bigger scores and are more less Elimination style of hounds , which do win a lot , especially in the other KC but as far as big scoring hounds , it's rare. Unless they are the really good ones . Jmo

Got a good one ...look him up . Pleasure to hunt has coons when he trees, rarely misses , win probably 80% . Got to be able to flat out drive a track . I travel some with him to $kc but don't have time or money that some of these guys have & still stay near top.
Don't mind walking to them split trees as long as there's a coon when I get there. Not perfect none are but good enough for me .

Dead Loners

There are not that many out there I usually laugh at what people call dead loners. A DEAD LONER WITH A BIG MOTER THAT IS DEADLY ACCURATE are extreme rare finds but dog gone tuff to beat expecally in thin coon like I have around here. Its just math around here a dog that will get to itsself once a hour and get treed and have the coon will give you even with a low strike 250 in the other kc and 300 in ukc. I will win 85% of 2 hour cast around here with a dog like that. I know that will not get it done in all parts of the country but in thin coon one is deadly. IF YOU CANNOT WIN WITH A DEAD LONER YOU ARE LACKIN IN THE DOG POWER DEPARTMENT. IF YOU WANT OUR DOG TO PACK UP WITH ALL THIS SORRY CRAP EVERYONE ELSE BRINGS TO THESE HUNTS THEN GREAT IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR ME TO WIN WITH YOURS BACKIN THESE SLICK TREEING IDIOTS AND SUCKIN UP MINIUS WITH THEM WHILE MINE IS UNDER RICKY THROUGH THE COUNTRY. I know some will say yes that will get you in trouble and yes at times it will. You will never find a hound that can win in every circumstance and I guess it boils down to what a man likes. Watch the wipeout invitational hunt on treed tv. Those are some of the most winningest dogs alive in that final cast watch how many times they tree together.

independent

I love an independent dog. I hate a dead loner. My kind of dog will leave looking for a coon. He will strike the first coon he comes across, trail it hot or cold, to the right tree. He does this no matter what the other dogs do. my kind of dog does NOT pass coons just to get by themselves. I had the kind I like until a month ago and hope to have another soon. If you have and like a loner I "m happy for you. it would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing in a hound. May we all find the one we like.

Great response Daniel. You say what you believe and know to be true, I guess that's why I like you and what you hunt.
