Treeing curs

Just curious what everyone has. What crosses you like and what has worked for you and why do you like the cross.
I like Mtn cur x English or Mtn cur X Redbone ive always been curious about the Cur x Bird dog crosses as i used to hunt GSP and they where a very smart and active dog just was curious if you'd lose treeing ability.
My Mtn Cur x English Female she is full of hunt and grit will tree just about anything that will go up a tree lol.

I hunt treeing curs and my dogs are grand daughter to Rat Attack and X jr. I have not added or made any cur/hound crosses myself. I like the hound in them and they suit me.

I was trying to line up and get my sniper female breed to a really nice redbone male of my uncles who is from some really nice champion lines he started treeing on his own at 8 months he's 4 now don't know ho many hundreds of coons he's had shot out to him but when we put him with a female in season he would do nothing lol don't know if he will ever breed or not. Ive seen several redbone cur crosses and what i have seen has been really nice may look at buying my own male latter if my uncles dont' work out.
My sniper female

my advise on breeding your female would be to breed her to Treeing Cur instead of a straight hound. The reason is that you get your shot of hound without giving up much of her Cur qualities. Or if a treeing cur is not within reach try doing some research and see what has been crossing well on Sniper females. I have a litter of pups here now out of a Thunder Sport OMCBA male and my treeing cur female. They will only be 1/8 hound if my figuring is correct. My female is a Grand daughter to Rat Attack and her Sire is Amazing Swamp Rat which is half cur half Rat Attack. She is a super nice little dog and i was wanting to get the size down some and put a little more cur into what I have. In the future I may cross out onto a well proven walker stud on the female I am keeping out of this litter. I have had good success linebreeding the dogs I have, but you can only go so far until a outcross is needed. I out crossed to the Mountain Curs this go around. This will insure im not to HOUNDY down the road

Danny i do see your point ive done the half and half cross a few times seems you get a few that are two mouthy on track for squirrel but make some nice coon dogs. But im just pondering still it will be after this hunting season when i decide on what i want to breed her two. I really like mtn curs there smart as all get out but ive been raised hunting behind more hounds than anything and a good hunting hound is a sight to see so thats why i like the mix trying to get the best of both worlds. May get that down the road ya never know. Now i do have red lined up to breed to one heck of a meat dog next spring he's 1/2 mtn cur and 1/2 stephens that will make the pups 3/4 mtn cur 1/4 english 1/4 stephens cur im real excited about that cross cause that male is a go getter . thanks for your reply danny.

I've had a lot better luck with Feist X Hound crosses than I have with Cur X Hound crosses. I have 2 Plott X Feist that are about too old to hunt that have been good ones and a Walker X Feist that I like a lot.

I have a half cur half redbone female. She is 18 months and started treeing at 3 months. She is a sight to see in the woods and is one heck of a dog! She looks just like a hound, cept for the short tail. I don't understand the " too mouthy for squirrels" line everyone throws out. She is wide open on squirrels and will show you just as many as a silent dog. If you have never hunted with a wide open dog on squirrel, you should see it sometime, it's not like most people think.

I really like mine, I have a redbone x cur with some GSP in her back ground that's showed as much natural talent as I've seen. I also have 2 redbone x BMC that are ready to hit the woods, both have big ol hound voice and no quit in them. If things work out I'll try them on some hogs and maybe a bear next week.

I have had great luck with the English Coonhound and Treeing Feist crosses. I think the hound gives them the tree power I like, keeps them open mouthed, and makes them more suitable on coon for me. I see some people say being open mouthed hurting them on squirrels, so far I haven't had any problem with this. Mine tree squirrels just fine. The feist side gives them brains, personality, and keeps them in the size range I like, I prefer a smaller dog. Don't need a 60 lb. dog for treeing a squirrel. I am planning on making a bird dog cross next year hopefully, see how that turns out. Although color is the least important factor, I like a ticked up dog. Mine come in bluetick, redtick, and an odd color I call "mudtick".

cur crosses

I have a redtick female squirrel dog that I purchased last year that came from Ohio. I was told that she is a English/Cur cross. I am not convinced that she has much if any Cur blood in her. Needless to say when she came in heat I started looking to find a Cur/Hound cross male to breed her to that was local or not too far away to breed to. For various reasons, all my own quirks or preferences, I didn't find a male of cur/hound cross to breed her to. So as a result I bred her to one of my good hunting buddies Dual Champion English males. He met a couple of the criteria that I wanted in the stud dog in order to considering it for breeding to my female. He is a silent track dog who is off of a silent track-mouthed mother. He is a hard hunting, looking to get treed , hard tree dog. He is off of a cross that reproduced several offspring that ran and treed at an early age. He is a friendly, not overly hyper dog who loves to go. My female is a good handling, hard-working, looking to get treed, hard-treeing, loud mouthed, action packed medium sized hound in whom I have been extremely pleased to own and hunt. I registered her in USDR and got an eighth place in her first and only squirrel hunt, that to my knowledge, she has ever been in. I have taken her coon hunting twice since I have owned her and she has treed on trees that were more likely than not squirrel scented trees and on some legitimate "circle" trees for coon. (den trees and large very leafy water-oaks) I have yet to find a coon in her trees made but I feel like she should tree coons based upon what I have seen from her. I have no definite clue as what her breeding is from but was told that her English breeding goes back to Swamp Rooster and was given no clue as to what her cur breeding comes from. The stud dog nicknamed "Shag" by his owner Donald Miller of Cameron NC is off of Dual Gr. Gibbons Uptight Spike and Donald's Nt Ch female, with wins toward Grand, named Mabel. Mabel is by far one of the most accurate dogs that I have ever hunted with. Pups should be here around August 21st to 24th and by the looks of my female there should be a plenty. "Shag" is out of a litter of 14!!! I made this cross to get another squirrel dog to hunt but I will also try coon hunting with these pups as well. This is my first cross of proposed squirrel dogs so I hope it turns out to be successful. So in a long drawn out nut shell this is my feeling about hound crosses for squirrel hunting, Hopefully this cross won't turn out to be a total bust.!!!???

hound/cur

Almost everything I hunt is walker/cur cross ... I have a 3/4 walker 1/4 cur female i hunt that is silent on squirrels and semi open on a coon and wired 220. But I try to stay around half and half on all my crosses though, I bred her like that to breed back to my full mtn cur male had pretty good luck with them so far. They seem to make a good tree dogs with plenty of nose so you can coon hunt with the hound boys.. LOL

Would NOT hurt Pride's feelings to breed another Cur female.
