Definition of a real coon dog

I think a real coon dog goes deep to find a coon and doesn't have to use a bucket or doesn't come back when it reaches 50 yards . Jmo

Being a real coondog has nothing to do with how hard the dog hunts . It has to do with how the dog trees coons , how consistent he does it and without mistakes

Dang I sure would hate to think that mine had to get deep to be a real one.

Posted by Bigridge kennel on 07-08-2013 02:16 AM:

I mean if a dog goes deep to find one and catches one no matter how far it took he would be pretty consistent? I had a walker that was give to me and she had wins under her belt , but she went 100 yards and came back ? I mean where I hunt I don't feed coon . So that's when that deep dog goes in and catches them .

COON DOG

A GOOD COON DOG WILL TREE A COON IN ANY TERRIAN BUT THEY ALL MAKE MISTAKES JUST LIKE WE DO LOL

Posted by Ty Ford on 07-08-2013 02:54 AM:

Real coondog

When you turn it loose by itself or in company it goes ever how far it has to to find a coon whether it be 50 yards or a mile. Opens up on track but not a babbler and the quicker the better but as long as it's accurate speed doesn't matter to me. When it trees it will lockdown and be there until I get there whether it be 5 minutes or an hour with glowing eyes looking down a high percentage of the time.

A real coondog

A real coondog to me, goes and trees you coons. Not many empty trees. A real coondog has one thing on it's mind when you cut it loose, go tree a coon.
Now a good coondog that also wins in competition, now that is a little different and hard to find. They have to get struck quick, trail and tree coons without paying any attention to the other dogs, get treed quick and be accurate. At least here in IL and IN where the coon are plentiful.

To me a real coondog must be consistent. It should give you the same effort every night and be all the things listed above. Also trees the first track it strikes without striking tracks that it can not handle. It should be able to handle a tough track without standing on its head for an hour. Just my opinion.

A coondog knows where to find coons and hunts as close or deep as he has to find a track that he run and tree a coon.....he has the heart desire and determination to tree a coon everytime he is dropped....loudness.how many barks a minute.how often or how less he opens on track is all man desirable traits in a hound that people like but none of it makes a coondog! I dont care if hes silent on track and squeeks like mickey mouse on tree if he has the want to get a coon treed and the ability to consistantly do it....night in...night out....hes a coodog!

That's the truth too! My dogs neighbor has a god awful mouth . But it's the best / fastest/smartest and will finish a track No matter what

I agree, CONSISTENCY IS HUGE!! IMO a REAL COONDOG is the same dog every night. You know what they are going to do before you turn them loose. They consistently tree coons, year round, in any condition and every terrain with little guessing, and very few mistakes!

X2, a real COONDOG should be what I call "Coon Smart," meaning no matter where you cut them, somehow they just seem to know how and where to find a coon track!

I also know alot that Anit worth anything they are just pack dogs . I mean I'd love to see how many would actually tree something . Now once again i know ( there is alot of good dogs that are grandnite champ -etc that would smoke my dogs and actually have the meat and need no help) I'm not saying all dog are like that at all, just some . I know alot that are nite champs that are real hounds in the woods .

Very few!!!! A lot of hounds are bein championed by plusin unseen coons, by carryin plus off another hound and waitin on that hound to take minus, theres so many ways of titlin a hound that those titles have become not so prestigious now! Just like all grand pedigrees......do u think that if u breed a grnt to a gr nt its goin to produce grnts that also are goin to produce grnts by a outcrossed breedin just because they are also grnts......maybe but not as much as u see..... as far as breedin is concerned(why I think the lack of coondogs has diminished and grnts are flourishin) all gr pedigrees and grnt sires out of two world chs are pretty on paper and make a good conversation but do they feel ur freezer with fur? Just think about the absolute best MEAT dogs uve followed I may be wrong but was probaly crossbred or out of pr dogs...or at least not all grands
