question about a redbone
i have a 14 month old redbone that will run a track great with other dogs and has split treed a few times, but he has treed alone before, he just doesnt tree hard everytime sometimes he will stand up and chop other times he will stand by a tree and bark every minute or two. also how do i get him to go and hunt by himself i have took him alone a few times and he just hunts around me about 75 yards im kind of new to coon hunting so need some advice. thanks in advance

Sell the Redbone and buy a Walker. Problem solved
He's not confident in himself, hunt him alone and start shooting some coon out to him. Would u mind sending me a pedigree of this dog n I might be able to help more

For his age, he is coming along great! Just keep taking him out and try and take him some alone around swamps or feeders or wherever there are plenty of coon. Give him time and be patient...hes doing great for being so young.
thanks jaybird and red rebels! yes i can send you his pedigree do you want me to send it in a email or something else?

I'm kinda with Aaron, sell the dog and get something else. A walker or mnt cur any thing but Black and Tans or red bones.
so much discouraging. need to encourage folks to do/hunt what they like, not what you like. if he likes redbones, keep at it. from what the other folks have said you're one the right track. not all dogs come out of the womb treeing, but then not all will burn out at 2yo either. hunt what you like, feed what you like, show what you like, to heck with the rest. good luck.

Hunt him
He needs lots of nights in the woods alone to get comfortable with going far. About those trees that he doesn't tree very hard, he probably isn't so sure of, or they don't have a lot of strong scent on them. When he gets more confident all that will get better. He'll probably make you a real nice accurate dog once you've put the time in.

after looking at what you emailed me, he has a base but personally I'd like to see more hunt dogs in there. I'd just say he either came from some backyard breedings and just doesn't have the competition drive that the bigger redbone breeders are breeding for these days. I had one at his age that did the same thing, and after 30 days of hard hunting and droppin coon he was a nice little dog, unfortunately I lost him throughout the winter and I cant tell you how he finished out but I'd say just keep huntin him, he's young yet

Like a few of us said, keep taking him too the woods. People hung up on breeds are really holding themselves back. I grew up with a grand dad that hunted redbones and blue ticks...they were awesome. They had to have the meat as he sold pelts. Ive had red, black, and a few walkers. Judge each dog on their ability, not their breed. Good luck with your hound, sounds like its coming along great. It will go further out as it gets older.
Keep us updated how it does...thats why i read this site is for possitive discussion.

That's why I switched. But if you like the long nights of having to walk your dog into the woods so he can hit a track then that's fine.
