they are registered with ukc as blueticks. at one time the gascon folks were looking to separate as a breed but didn't due to various reasons. if you get an in depth enough ped you'll see they go back to the same dogs as other bluedogs. the gascon assoc. was formed in the 1970's when fanciers of the larger type dogs saw a growing trend, mainly for competition hunts, to go to a different type dog. track speed is on par with the average blue dog, nose does tend to be better, accurate (they do tend to take their time locating). mainly big dogs with lots of nose and voice and typically the gascon folks like a dog that's bawl mouthed all the way. I have shown some of my females in ukc and they did well. unfortunately, my males and some female exceed the height standard as set by bboa. if you are looking to get one i'd give the same advice as with any other dog...do your research, try to hunt with some different dogs to see what fits your style the best. I would point out that gascons are not leave the country type dogs and they will back or honor another dog's track and tree. mainly country coondog type dogs.

Gascon

I really can't add anything to what jha says but he told you a lot when he said to do your research. I have owned several over the years that some would call a gascon-type hound but to me they are just an old-fashion bluetick. I have enjoyed some good ones and they have been extremely intelligent and loyal. They tend to be cold-nosed check-in type hunters that try to please me at all times. They suit me perfectly. My most recent female may be my best, she is 92 lbs and has no champion or night champion hounds in five generations behind her but she shows in the woods and on the bench that some responsible breeding has been done over the years.

phil, I saw those pics awhile back and was pretty impressed with her looks. but what's with all that tan trim?

I guess I am color-blind. Even though I like an all-blue hound, my first hound many years ago was tan-trim and I will probably always be partial to that. Seems I remember a couple of tan-trim hounds tied out at your place

I would love to hunt with a gason if anybody around east central Mississippi has one and wouldn't mind me tagging along. I have a all blue / black male that's 90 lbs that I'd like to cross with a gascon. He's 2 yrs old show champion & HTX , never put him in a nite hunt but I'm fixing to. I can send pictures and video and give references. I'd love to take a big blue dog and beat the britches off people at competition hunts! Lol

I haven't heard of anyone with pups going down to s.e. walker days. not a lot of folks breeding these dogs so quality litters are few and far between.

Mr. Clark I am pretty sure I have seen pictures of your hound before and he is a real nice looking bluetick. I don't know of anyone down your way but I am sure that someone from the gascon association could help you out.

Driller

Thanks for the info and compliment. Every time I've taken him to hunt everybody ask if he's a gascon. From my understanding of the measurement requirements he'd be borderline. Since he has the HTX & show titles I think I'm going to enter him in his first nite hunt next month. I would like to gain the nitech title as well although I prefer the HTX & pleasure hunts myself. If I could breed him with a gascon all I'd want is a pup.

years ago ron krepps in Michigan had a dog named krepps blue josh that made nt.ch. I think he also had a dog named honest abe that made nt.ch. also, a few years back Priscilla huff had a female named leah that made nt.ch. and if i'm not mistaken danny huff qualified leah's brother jack for the world hunt. jack didn't get hunted enough to earn a degree. burl goddard down in monks corner, s.c. had a male named Buford that met gascon standards and was a gr.nt. burl and Buford were in the final four down at orangeburg one year. those are the ones I can think of off hand. gascon folk are typically pleasure hunters and the dogs aren't really bred to excel within the structure of a competitive night hunt. all that said, a dog may not hunt to a person's particular preferred style but when the leaves are off a coondog is a coondog.

Gascon hunt and get together

Billy...if you really want to see and learn about these hounds, you ought to see them firsthand and in action. The hounds and people are first rate. There is a Gascon hunt and get together March 1-2 in Granite Falls, North Carolina. If you are interested in going, you could meet up and ride with me.
