Treeing Possums

I've always wondered what do other coon hunters do when there dogs tree possums. Do yall discipline your dogs when they tree one or Ive heard some people just get there dogs off the tree. What do yall think??

When I was training my dog I would scold her off the tree. I wouldn't put a lead on her. Anytime she would try to get to that tree I would just scold her till she left. I think she got the hint, I have ran one opossum this year and she had it in the end of a log. This is just what I have done. Good post hopefully you will get the ideas your looking for

That sounds close to what I do. I have thought about it before and when you beat your dogs when you tree a possum do they think "Why are you beating me". The reason I say that is because I have heard some hunters say that possums and coons have the same scent. If mine tree a possum I just do what you do. Scold them and send them on hunting, I use to discipline them but I got to thinking about what I was doing. Thanks for the post man.

if a coon and opossm had the same scent every dog out there would tree em you wouldn't know what your were walking to from one tree to the next i knock it out and go to town broke a lot of dogs this way that went on to make good dogs if they have a brain they know the difference

I don't like whoopen a dog on the tree unless its a slick I feel beaten one when he has it up there and can smell it up there will do a lot of harm then good now a slick is different that dog knows nothing is up there his tree switch just overrides his mind more then it should but on a possum I'd just take the dog off a tree and say no or nothing at all then the next time he trees a coon love on him now I will break my dogs off possum with an electric fence if I know where one it at but I didn't for my male dog so I cought one turned it aloose and made him run it and laid the juice to him then killed Mr p and whooped my dog with it

if it is a puppy isay bad dog and smack them on thier head solftle most of the time they figure it out were coon hunting. i hunt gamey kind of pups so i tree some off game. now when they turn 2yr. old and sill treeing off game i switch them on the tree not e-collor them and send them on. my good dog when he was about a 1yr. to about 1 1/2 would run a track and if it would brake down would start checking trees would tree on what ever he coud smell. i would just tell him no and go find that coon most of the time he would.
now at 3yr. old on a bad night were coons are not moving and hunted for a few hours he might and i mean might tree a possum

Had a little issue with mine. I tried e-collars lightly on the tree but was worried about him associating it with treeing. So I shot a possum out one night and every time he would even look at it I would switch him good. I would then kick the possum or shake it with my foot to get it moving and if he even looked at it he got switched. That was around march or april of 2012. I have not had him to hit one since. I have had other dogs on them and he has walked by not paying any attention to them. Now he might do it tomorrow but that worked for me.

i dont mind if my dog trees a possum because im not going to any big hunts so a possum is just as fun as a coon. i dont shoot them out or praise the dog, just pull them off the tree. i would sooner have a dog that trees possum than one that thinks its going to trees squirrels

Both, more pleasure than comp hunt though. But if I want a coon dog it will have to tree coons.

grinners are a good way to teach a pup to tree lol. when i competion hunted if my dog treed a possum i would fuss at him and pull him off the tree as quick as i got there.i bonded with my dogs so i didnt have to do much more then fuss at them when they done wrong most times.

knock it out and zip tie it to its collar and leave it on there for about a week. This just applys to grown dogs. This has worked for me

Buddy of mine shoots every possum and coon out that his young dogs tree. His dogs have always quit treeing possum after they have had several coon shot out to them.

These guys are slippin.... you cant have a thread about possum breakin without the put em in a barrell with a possum and roll em down a hill trick, or how about one of my favorites.. Cut the possum open and hold it over the dogs nose until it passes out...

John, I think the e-collar has taken over the old methods. LOL We hardly ever hear about them anymore. My favorite was to take a 409 pump spray bottle full of gas and drench the possum. Then take a stick and shove the possum out. When it hits the ground and dog grabs it, strike a wood match and throw it at the possum. I about fell off the tailgate when a hillbilly at a prohunt told us that one. LOL

Billy, You should of heard the guy tell the story about this method. He was one of those guys that would make you laugh at a story that wasn't even funny. I am not sure I have ever talked to a man that was more full of $hit. lol

LOL After this guy told us the story a young boy said he was trying to break his pup from treeing in the ground. He was wondering if he poured gas into the hole and thru a match in the hole when the pup treed in it if that would break his pup. LOL

X2, met a fella while hunting up in mountains like this. liked him very much, he could really crack you up, bring tears to your eyes laughing so hard at his hunting stories. man, he is a character.

Breakin off possum

I have struggled with this for years. I have beat, kicked, shocked and cussed. I have tried everything short of settin em on fire (funniest story ever btw). I wonder if breaking the dog off the track would be more successful than when they tree em. Im going to try turning a possum loose, or when i see one crossing the road, and let the dog start trailing it and press the button. It works on deer, why not on possums..? Cant hurt i dont think. Just an idea. If it works..i want the patent on it lol!!!
