billy, may sound a little crazy, but what works good for me is just plain old bread, lots of bread. i get out of date bread, hotdog buns, dinner rolls, hamburger buns, at good price and it keeps good in plastic barrels in cool weather.

country trick

Sir try this to save yourself some money, go to your local dollar store an get packs of that mcormicks brown gravy mix. Little hot water and there you go. Pack last a couple days mixed with food.

Billy this has always worked for me you can ask anyone around me or who knows my dogs. I go to farm store and get powdered calfs milk or goats milk sprinkle it on the dog food and that works. Also feed them boiled rice and beef. My dogs don't ever look like their lacking food. Also in the winter i get some cracklins and will feed them. Jim is right though some dogs are to hyper to keep on weight. But if your feeding them good you shouldn't have to worry cause their healthy.

I think the key might be the fat content in the whatever your feeding rather than the protein.

you might also try tieing him on about a 3 ft chain for awhile then he womt have alot of room to move around and like some 1 else said get something that has a high fat content to feed him jmo

Billy have the same problem with my young dog ,but when hunting them it gets even harder to keep the weight on, I feed twice a day 1/2 as much as I normally feed in the morning,If I feed 6 cups(Estimated) in evening I'll feed 3 in the AM putting on weight now, plus I always in the winter add warm water to the feed at least 10 minutes before feeding, makes sure they get pleanty of water intake, has worked for me, changing diet to often is not the best idea( unless done gradually), will give alot of them upset stomach, best to just feed more and higher fat content in the winter is the best. JMO Like you I feed Diamond which is 24 prtien and 20% fat.
Also my older dog when hunted hard will loose weight in the winter escpecialy, I usually start slowly changing him over to Joy in the fall, which is 32 protien and 18 fat. and 1/2 diamond seems to keep him in alot better shape and feed him extra 1/2 ration in the morning. Just harder to keep them up when hunting hard, usually just have to feed a little more and adjust as they do will keep them in shape if wormed regular. Like you I don't like to see alot of bones

Pacing in the pen is a bad trait and might be accompanied with other bad traits.

Several above have suggested various milk products. Not good for dogs after a certain age.

For what it's worth, i once had a heavy built dog that was over-weight and a smaller dog that was hard to get weight on. I started skipping days and feeding them a good amount every second day. The skinny one gained and the fat one lost.

Have you wormed the Pup with "SAFE-GUARD" that gets WHIPWORMS. A lot of Wormers do not.

If you haven't did so; try it; it may be what you need.

I use the "SAFE-GUARD CANINE DEWORMER" It is packed for dogs with good dosage directions on the box.

After I read these posts went out and looked looked at my pup and was thinkin' he sure needs some fat on before gets colder. Never had to deal with this with a pup.

Your pup is not only pacing, he's gettin' lots of time in the woods. I could see how he's burning fat quicker than you're putting it on him.

Wonder if i could rig my grill to catch drippings. Noticed when we grill beaf or chicken, lots of fat drips into the fire.

If you trap I have seen guys around here feed dogs muskrat carcass after they skin them. Will make your dog fat and shiny in a hurry from what i have seen.

the only thing that will keep fat on a hyper dog is LACK OF RUNNING ROOM. any of the feed posted will work. if it's in a good size lot plus getting hunted it will never get heavy no matter what you feed it. the more a dog is hunted the harder it is to wear it down

I paid big $ for the high priced dog food before but what worked best for me to get a dog to gain weight was boiled eggs.

Don't overfeed ... it will not help , the dog will start passing his feed before it's digested to make room for the new stuff and you will just have a bunch of piles of mud and a dog that is not getting the good stuff out of his feed.

Oil is tricky because dogs weren't meant to eat it , lard will put fat on them ... but the first thing I'd do is worm him again and really count the days to make sure you get the larvae , hatchlings and worms .... you can worm with that high dollar tapeworm stuff but it won't do any good if it's random and they just hatch right back out.

If you have a pacer , but some plywood or tin around his pen , maybe leave one side open but block his view of things that cause him that anxiety and get him to calm down .

Fixing the root of his issues is the key , not just adding more to his feed .... good luck
