Accuracy

Which one do you think is more true , speaking on what you feed or have seen ?

Posted by berger on 11-05-2012 02:29 PM:

Dirt Devil a good track dog can locate quickly and be accurate. They know the coon went up and it is over. A poor track dog can check all around and still be inaccurate.

Oh , I firmly believe it ... but not everyone has seen it or believes it ... a dog can locate as they come in and be unreal accurate .

The old style of trailing to the tree and locating , then checking and coming back to set it up doesn't mean a dog is accurate .. just not born with real confidence in itself .

Just wondering how many folks honestly have yet to see a quick treedog that is accurate ....

Dirt Devil I had a dog once that was extremely quick locator he was also extremely fast on track and very smart. I cut him loose and he went in and exploded on the tree walked in and there was nothing there. Cut him loose again he went out in this corn field struck brought track out and come treed. Walked in it was the same tree this time he had a coon sitting there looking at me. That I believe was the last night he treed slick as I saw how fast he was that he was just getting to the tree before the coon was and how good of a track dog he was that he knew where the coon was going before it went.lol

A dog that knows what he's doing can be fast and accurate. Its a mixture of talent and confidence. A dog like that will beat you to death when the clock is on....

Had one years ago I'm sure most of the time located coming into the tree no checking and was very accurate .have only seen one other that could do that and have a coon.wish I had one like him now.

They should check before they locate then come up treed

Have you ever seen a dog let out a locate as it's approaching the tree and be treed when it's feet hit ... and not check , but still be deadly accurate ?

Posted by kycooner1 on 11-05-2012 11:27 PM:

This locating coming into the tree was seen in black dogs in the 70's and 80's ..i personally believe it came from Bird dog being bred into them..A couple of lines were known for this trait.. I am in the process of making some semen crosses with the intent of finding this trait . These type dogs ran with there head up,,and when the coon was over there head went to locating coming into the tree..If I can find this trait ,,and add some Cane,,Ox and Hobo Hoss Blood,,That WHIF money isn't going to be safe.

That semen cross you are making with some Ace and Luke blood looks like a dandy.

My gyp don't run with her head up , she sticks to the track and works it honest ... but since she was a pup on her first tree she locates coming in alot ... I knew she was too accurate for the way she treed and didn't actually see it for awhile ... but she comes in locating and just slides up the tree and just knows it's there ... and I think that confidence is where percieved independence comes from ... and it's fun !

But , she is out of semen from some old blood ... maybe that trip to the freezer helped , lol ....

Nathan and Frank - This past summer (late) I had moved in the direction that Sniper was running a track in a cornfield. I was standing along the edge of the cornfield approximately 75 yds behind the farmer's house. Sniper hadn't opened in about 3 or 4 minutes. I heard a rustle in the corn and figured it was Sniper. A coon popped out of the corn about 50 feet from me and ran up an apple tree approximately 25 feet from the edge of the corn. I heard Sniper open about 100 feet or so behind him. As he came out of the last row of corn I heard and watched him start that big ole bawl locate before he even hit the tree. He 'bout had me sprouting wood not only listening to him that close but watching him too!!!

Justin I think a dog lacks confidence when its checking himself, or hes looking for another track to run , some dogs dont want to tree the first coon up , most dogs ive had would locate before they were treed seen it lots of times, every dog knows if it has the coon just listen you can here it

Kycooner do u recall any of those old bloodlines or dogs names from 70s and 80s just curious .

Posted by Dirtdevil on 11-06-2012 02:29 AM:

Darrell , no doubt you're right ... just seems like alot of folks and especially ones that hunt the "off" breeds seem to still hang on to ideals that hold them back .... like cold nosed being slow , quick locators not being accurate and other stuff that is the basis for improvement ....

So far, the votes are a little more promising than I would have guessed ...

I had a walker dog that was accurate... About 90% If he was treed he had a coon on the outside. And I have herd of dogs that do it but never seen one.

I should also state he wasn't one that blew the the timber to find a coon and I would seen him on the tree smelling.

I think you guys are putting to much into it , a coondog is gonna check his self. i got one that will locate at times and at times come treed and yes when he trees grab the gun eather way when he is treed you cant pull him so does it realy matter if they check there self ?

If you haven't seen both, how do you know it doesn't matter to you ?

A dog that can locate rolling in consistantly is just plain fun and a neat thing ... they don't have to be the first to the tree to be treed first and that ability and confidence seems to breed accuracy .

Does it matter ? Yes , it matters to me and it matters if we wanna move the breed forward ... pairing up dogs with unique traits that make them the cream of the crop is the fastest way to get better ...... just breeding and hoping the pup you keep is awesome is the opposite of that .

had a couple

back in the late 80s and early 90s i had a female that would locate comin in to the tree she was cold nosed fast track dog that would also tree layups. her son had the same ability and was probably even better at it. and his son lacked a little of their cold nose but had the same locating and layup ability. the female it started with was off of gr nt nelsons nig who was off of nt ch nelsons brandy and nightriders trouble. i have heard that the nightrider strain puts alot of the winding and layup ability in the hounds. wish i had a kennel full of them. the only thing that held them back from being great comp dogs is they didnt like dogs facebarkin em or being aggresive and they would pull.

The type track a dog is moving determines how a dog comes on the tree. No dog comes on the tree the exact same way everytime. It is according to the temperature of the track or type track ran.
Most dogs will jam a hot track and check a lil more on a bad track.
Ive seen MOLLY move tracks other dogs couldn't even smell and when she treed em ,the track was so bad,she had to convince herself the coon were there and her have em and other dogs stand at the tree and act like she was crazy and her have the Bacon. She sure didnt tree as hard on them and located a lil more than usual, more so on a warmer track.
