should i become worried

it as been over a year since my dog has messed with a possum, until last night (he put the possum in a hole). he has treed coon all this time. even during the hot summer nights. the last tme he had a possum i shocked him on as high as the tritronics unit went with the possum in his mouth. hadnt had a prob since. so was last night just a fluke based on that darn full moon or what? since hide season opend i have shot 4 coon over him no prob, then last night made him look so stupid. i have been telling everyone how awesome he has been doing and then makes me look like a liar. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. ok im done venting now. and yes i did do possum correction again last night.

It wasnt the dogs fault, the bragging is what done it.lol

I dont consider once a year a problem, but dont let it get out of hand.

the amount of possoms your dog trees, junk your dog runs, and so on and so forth may have to do with the coon population in your area. Do you guys think its harder for a dog to turn down 1 possom or 3 before it smells a coon track???? Same for deer and fox and everything else. You gotta look at a dogs options. How long can a dog remain "patient"????? Just my opinion.

Possum

Your dog probably ran by the possum and had the chance to chase live game it could see and just got excited. I wouldnt worry unless it happens all the time.

Sheep that is just plain ignorant. A good coondog isn't gonna choose a grinner over a ringtail. And he is gonna hunt till he finds one or check in.

I see you CORRECTED the dog on the possum. If it thinks it has got away with it.You will be looking at another one in the near future!

Posted by sheepster on 10-20-2005 12:59 AM:

T. Beyer, a dog only has so much will power and so much patience. You keep havein to turn loose in places like most of us North Ga. hunters have to and you'll see right quick like that a dog will have to pass a BUNCH of junk in order to ever find a coon track.

But all in all he is a very good dog. Not mean at all and not trashy and he has the coon WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY more than 90% of walker dogs I have been with. My old female is still more accurate but he is pretty good too. My other friends have walker dogs and a couple of them are ok. But I like tommy the most probably. Him and my blue female work very, very well together usually.

So what does this dog do up there, you say he isn't trashy and has a coon. were you telling a fib again................

Posted by sheepster on 10-20-2005 01:20 AM:

no hipsnotty, no dog in this world is perfect. Yes, I have saw this dog make mistakes. ALL dogs do. However, overall I like the dog and he is not USUALLY trashy. I have seen bad things out of every dog I have ever been with very many times at all.

I've always kind of thought the same way as Sheep on this. However Sheep you will notice that a good dog can make your coon population look alot better.

Posted by Hiphop on 10-20-2005 01:23 AM:

So the best dog you ever been with would run treash if he couldnt find a coon, you need to get out more, there are some better dogs out there.

Why dont we set up a hunt, dont you have plenty of time?

are grand nite champions supposed to be good dogs?????? If so I have been with some of them that I wouldnt own if you put em in my pen and gave me a years supply of dog food to feed em. Now, I have been with a couple good ones also. Hiphop, if you have some perfect dogs then more power to you. I have yet to see one.

Posted by sheepster on 10-20-2005 01:33 AM:

hipflop, By not "trashy", I think when most folks say that they mean that the dog doesnt "usually" or normally run trash. The dog very rarely runs trash. Which is one of the things I like about him.

Posted by Hiphop on 10-20-2005 01:42 AM:

Why dont we meet for a hunt and work this out, no need to get upset, I'm just trying to figure out what you are saying. Maybe you need to talk to someone about this anger problem.

Posted by BigBlack79 on 10-20-2005 06:14 AM:

made 2 dumps tonight he ran 2 hellacious tracks but never did find anything up there. .......STUPID LEAVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year I killed over 80 coon

And this year my dogs look like complete morons on some nights and I agree not all dogs are perfect and we all have our share of problems with our dogs. Everytime I brag up my dogs they look like complete idiots and conclusion is Don't brag them up cause that way if they mess up then you don't look like a lying idiot also.jmo.

Joey You made my point better than I did.
I would be glad to hunt Breeze down there in your neck of the woods if I get the chance. I ain't worried about her treeing a possum, she is a coon dog.

Posted by T.Beyer on 10-20-2005 07:02 PM:

Sheep dogs don't just tree possums for something to do. Even if they aren't finding a track as fast as they would want to. A good dog just is not gonna mess with a trash track. Now I won't say Breeze hasn't ever got on a deer, but I have yet to catch her doing it since I have owned her. But she aint interested in one when I cut her loose on top of one and she surely don't mess with no slick tails.
