What is a fair price for a pup

out of a top female and a well known REPRODUCING stud? May be the only pups the female will ever have. Stud fee is $300 and stud is located 600 miles away.

I see pups out of a lot of dogs selling for $1000.
What is fair?

i would say between 300 and 400 hundred not every pup is going to make it as a coondog and if i paid a 1000 or so i would expect it to make a decent dog but a cheap pup sometimes dont get a chance. if people pay something for it they will usally put more time in it.

pup is not worth any more.......

than what the stud fee is............. if the pups are worth a 1000 then the stud fee is worth a 1000....... JMO


what top female are you breeding and to what known REPRODUCER?

There are two components to a litter in my view. First, have the pups been cared for by the breeder. This is important because the lifespan and health of the pups has a direct relation to whether there has been adequate care of the pupsand the gyp when the pups were in utero. Second, can the parents perform.

$ 300 is a good price for quality pups. Probably bargain basement.

That is really easy it's what the market will bear then when you take in to accout that most of the pople that coon hunt are a bunch of cheapskates ,you will see why you can easily buy a well bred hound pup for 300 or 400 buck's but a two pound yapper that does'nt do any thing but shed all over your house will easily cost you 800 to 1200 buck's but some one buying one for a pet will whip out the check book and never bat a eye about . Ive been selling coonhound's for a long time and have had guy's drive two or three states away show up look the pup's over than
ask me if I wold take 50.00 buck's a pup and get mad at me when Isaid no and that I told them that the pup's were 300 before thay made the drive .after you factor in stud fee's ,shot's ,feed ,houseing ,vet care for the female and the pup's and my time at 300 a pup I figure might make 25 buck's a pup if I'am lucky if I factored in the agravation of trying to sell them to people that would hunt them I would be losing money .

like someone has already said not every pupis gonna make a dog. 1000 bucks for a pup is crazy,good blood or not. u can get some decent broke dogs for that and not have all the time wrapped up in training him. i said 400 and thats the tops

Some interesting comments being posted.
The one about people spending more time and effort with a more expensive pup is definately something to think about.

The comment about time is another...this female was winning in pkc on a regular basis at several different clubs. Now she is out of the hunts for at least 4 months. Lost winnings and the pleasure of hunting her are gone for a while.

I should have added that they will be SS and Performance pups.Well taken care of with all shots etc...

It depends how fast you want to sell them, and if I don't know how much of a top femele you actually have, you never mentioned anything about her or her breeding, then these other people don't know either and probably not want them. Maybe she is top, I am just saying I don't know. You just mentioned driving 600 miles away and paying 300 for the stud fee, I wouldn't want one.

I don't really care if I sell any of them. I may keep them all. I bred her because I think I will get top notch dogs from the cross. I was just curious as to what people thought would be a fair price.

Why would someone driving and paying a stud fee cause you to not want a pup? If someome did that, it would tell me they were pretty confident of getting what we all want, Top dogs.

I am just saying, because you didn't mention any titles or breeding, I just don't know if the pup is worth $500.

the only thing wrong with that is you have people out here that will buy those pups and think that it dont take as much to train them as some other pups, so it could be their fault they the pup didnt turn out...i also think that the price on some pups is high because they want the serious coonhunter to have a pup, i am a pretty serious hunter, but you will never see me pay over 300 dollars for ANY pup

A pup is NOT an "off the shelf" item. Find what you want and pay the price. Usually though(my opinion)someone who breeds for his own use,not for the public, is more apt to have quality pups and usually is more interested in getting these pups into good hands than commercial and magazine breeders. Usually you can get a quality pup at around $200 there. An average hunter who has a good reproducing female and also is a good coon dog wants to hunt his female for pleasure and is not usually fixed up for pups and wants move them out. Getting a pup for personal training is like picking a bride it's a long process of research on both sides, never HEARSAY. I'd never order a "mail order bride" nor buy a pup from what someone else says. Know the ancestry THEN you know what to expect and will work harder to "get there".

Remember usually "generic brands" are usually as good or better than "brand name".

I voted $400. I figure between the breeding costs, the veterinarian fees, the feed cost, etc. The dog is worth that. Especially with the cross you mentioned, a top female and a proven reproducer.

When I read the above, I had to laugh a little. The first thought that popped into my head was ....THERE SURE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF PEOPLE HUNTING THESE "GENERIC COONDOGS" LOL

None of the above. $100-$200 is more than enough. I have raised numerous litters and folks act like I am crazy when I ask $100 for a pup. I'd say this price would be plenty for a pup. When you buy a pup there is no guarantee it will live. There is no guarantee it will make a good dog. I don't care what it is out of. The all time leading reproducer is only around 15-16 percent. Are you willing to pay $300-$400 for a 15% chance to get a good dog??

now on the % of pups that make ntch or gr it dont take into the ones that get ruined or never hunted or put into hunts then how many get wins and get killed before they make it. so i dont look at the % that make it to ntch or gr but the % that makes a coondog. that is usally alot higher when bred to a good female and a known reproducer stud dog. i drove amost 3 hours one way to bred to a stud dog and this cross was made to help improve what i got. cost me 75.00 in gas 6 hours of my time plus 45.00 vet bill and feed. stud fee is a pup back so with that i have already racked up a bill and im taking alot of chance and this is before the pups are even born raising my own pup if she has only 2 or 3 i could have 200.00 to 300.00 a piece into them plus time. so i dont have a problem pay 300.00 to 400.00 for one.

Would a professional Baseball team give a 20 million dollar contract to a 5 year old because he is doing good in tee ball??? Chances are most 6 week old puppies are not gonna make it.
