OT - Handguns
What are some of your favorites on the market?
I recently took a pistol course and I'm looking to purchase a gun. I've narrowed it down to either a 380 or a 9mm, but other than that I haven't picked out anything particular. Just curious as to what everyone uses and likes.
For the course I got to shoot a .22, very nice and fun! I could have stayed all day and shot it. I think it was a Kel-tec.

You want absolute reliability and cheap purchase price, you got two great choices. Commie surplus. The CZ 82 and Bulgarian Makarov are prolly the two most reliable auto handguns out there. They can be bought in like new condition for under $250. Ammo is easy to buy and cheap. Power is midway between a 38Special and 9mm. I got both and they are way better than anything else I have ever carried.

I think women generally speaking do better with revolvers. Go with a Smith & Wesson J Frame (several models to choose from) and never look back. Will last you a lifetime. My wife carries the S&W 642 and loves it. I just sold my Ruger LCP .380 and I think I'm going to replace it with a S&W J frame. 380's might be nice in the summer but I don't think it's "enough" if you're only going to have one. 38 Special +P is definitely "enough". Just my opinion.

i deal with alot of guns and for women i would suggest the 380 or even 40 the kel tecs are nice guns also jennings arms which was bought by there employees and they changed there name jenco i think not for sure good cheap guns but if you want quility the go with ruger, tarus, SW, or even a gloc. i like the 5.7x28 pistol the rounds look like a .17 shell but they are on back order most places they will run you around 1000.00
here is a video on the FN5.7x28

i forgot about the kel-tec pmr 30

J frames Smith's are good as are the Ruger LCR series.
If you are looking for a semi-auto I would consider the Ruger LC9, M&P Shield, or Kahr PM9/CM9.
Handle and shoot as many as you can, then choose.
Bersa Thunder 380. Nice gun for the money. Put laser grips on my wifes, she loves it.
SIG SAUER, BEST GUN OUT THERE. PRICEY.

THE BEST GUN TO HAVE IS THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOU, IF YOU DON'T LIKE CARRYING IT, YOU WON'T HAVE IT WHEN YOU NEED IT!!! JACK O'CONNOR SAID OF BIG GAME RIFLES, "THE BEST ONE TO HAVE IS THE ONE YOU CAN HIT WITH", MEANING THAT POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT ACCURACY!!! THERE'S AN OLD COWBOY ADAGE, "BEWARE THE MAN WITH ONLY ONE GUN, HE LIKELY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT"!!!
check out Springfield XDM 9mm, match grade barrel, managable recoil, adjustable backstrap, 18 + 1 magazine $500-$600 bucks, I got a Kimber and a Sig the XDM out shoots both of them. Just be sure and get the XDM not just the XD.
Laura Bell....
If it came down to defending your life i personallywould not trust my life to a .380 or a 9mm. JMO

My only advice would be to get the largest cal. that you can shoot accurately and enjoy. If you have something that you dislike shooting it is worthless, you will hate to practice and eventually you will stop carrying. A well placed shot with a .22 is better than no shot at all. Go to your local gun shop and shoot a few different guns, you will find the one you like, if the gun shop doesn't let you shoot, then go to a range and talk to some of the people there,I bet they will be more than happy to let you shoot theirs.
anything with little ponies on it they cost a little more but you can
always get your money back.

You guys are good! I wasn't expecting this much response!
I've ruled out Revolvers, not saying they're bad, but I didn't like their feel compared to a semi auto pistol.
I would want this gun for personal protection. Hope I never have to use it, but if I do I'm not going down without a fight.
I went over the different calibers with my instructor and I'm firmly set on a 380 or 9mm.
I'm going crazy googling and youtubeing all of the suggestions you offered. If you have more ideas keep posting!!
I am now fully addicted and I would like to get a .22 to target shoot with at home because I had fun. 1 1/2" groups by my last 6 shots. But this will be something I more than likely get afterwards.
