Questional scratch ?.

Todd, Gus, and myself where having a good hunt treeing some coon. Took Agile home and got Solo. Solo gets split with coon. We put her in the truck and walk to Dolly and Buddy, both are Gr. Nites. Walk into tree and my Buddy dog smells like SKUNK. Now the question is does Buddy gets scratched for smelling like a SKUNK if we are in a UKC hunt. I said he does and one of the other two agreed, one disagreed. Now remember we did not see him fight or catch the SKUNK, he just smelled like one. I know he's sore today and not from the SKUNK. Question is: Is hes SCRATCHED or NOT:

Posted by smokin-1-mo on 04-21-2012 02:28 PM:

IM NOT TODD...BUT

NO HE DOES NOT GET SCRATCHED,IF YOU DIDNT SEE HIM KILLING IT OUR CHASEING IT NO...THEY COULD OF PASSED THROUGH THE AREA THE SKUNK WAS IN AND GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO MAKE HIM FILL HE WAS IN DANGER AND SET HIM OFF,SMELLING DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN THEY KILLED IT....

Posted by jackbob42 on 04-21-2012 02:46 PM:

I know I've walked up on a skunk and almost got it and I didn't do anything to deserve it.
So , unless I hear or see something that convinces me he molested it , I wouldn't scratch him.

If he smells like a coon are you going to plus him up without actually seeing him tree or catch it????? No..... then how can you scratch him for smelling like a skunk?

So you can scratch a dog for possum tracks in the snow but not for smelling like a skunk?

And we would be headed back to the club house and the MOH. If the MOH knew the UKC rules, I would be back hunting, if it was my dog. This is why people think they get cheated. They don't question a call in the woods and a couple days later they find out their dog was scratched or minused wrongly and tell ever one I GOT CHEATED. YOU ARE NOT A POOR SPORT IF YOU QUESTION A CALL YOU THINK IS WRONG.

Do you have to observe a dog taking off every breath after a deer to scratch it? No. Its a judgement call made by the judge and if the handler disagrees he can surely ask for a cast vote. As far as a skunk you can in no way shape or form scratch based on a smell.

I hunted with a man that smelled as bad as a skunk once, wish we could have scratched him.

Posted by turman on 04-21-2012 06:25 PM:

I would no more scratch a dog for smelling like a skunk than scratch one for a few porky quills in their chest or inside their front legs. I`ve seen dogs get sprayed just for running pass one and dogs get a few quills running over a porky in the corn.

If you see a deer run off and a dog falls in behind it trailing you are observing him molesting off-game.

No but they was a thread on here about it. Dogs treed on den. Only fresh tracks around were possum tracks. Ukc said scratch em.

IF I DIDNT SEE IT IM NOT GOING TO DO IT....

I dont know the correct answer. But there is a big difference between a dog that ran through wet "skunky" grass and a dog you cant stand by.

If the snow was fresh enough to see possum tracks only , why would a person want to make an excuse for the dog?
If there were both coon and possum tracks , I'd give the dog the benefit of the doubt.
But , if there is only possum tracks , he's getting what he's deserves.

If coon tracks were the only ones there would you plus the dog?

Of course not. Why? Because the rule requires the coon to be seen in order to plus it. On the other hand rule 6(k) requires you scratch for running offgame. So if the judge can make the case that the dog ran offgame, as evidenced by the tracks in the snow, the judge must scratch. Just follow the rules.
