What do you consider a WELL STARTED dog?

I've been reading some classifieds on here and really haven't seen many that I consider well started.... Well Started to me, means they will go hunting, strike their own track and at least tree an easy coon on their own.....No right or wrong answers here...just want to know what others think.

My thinking and yours is on the same page.

Well started to me means they can go hunting, strike, run and tree their own coon most of the time. If they can only tree a easy coon i'd classify that under lightly started.

Hunt, strike, trail, run and tree, at least tree enough to get there. Also either naturally straight or have a good idea what not to do. Also loads by command or by pointing to the open door. Just me but i start mine with other dogs and they might be well well well started track dogs by the time they start treeing.
A well started dog should be doing it all himself and at that point just keep getting better at doing it.

Well started to me is a young dog that will go as deep as necessary (in company) strike, trail & tree with older dogs on most all trees. Additionally that dog should be able to tree an easy coon by it's self also.

Yes a well started dog should be the kind that could be bought by a kid that would hunt, and not have , or expect to have, problems finishing him out.
Now, if the kid goes to beating on him for honoring another dog , that is a different story. That is NOT the dog I started.

You see this a lot on here.....Well started male/female. (Various ages). ***** bred. Hates a caged coon. Barks on a hang up. Will go short distance with other dogs.

I just don't think that's well started.

it can start hunting it can start tracking....all kinds of things before it is treeing its on coon before being called well started.... what do yall call a dog that will tree but isnt hunting but will go to another dog struck or one that will go hunting by itself strike and run to the tree and hit up a few barks but not sticking like it should... to me started is anything that will hunt[ it has started hunting] well started [is tracking and treeing to some extent]not on most tracks but on some tracks... when i get a dog that will track and tree on most tracks they are ready for the fine tuning and then the hunts

Posted by Joseph Closser on 03-30-2012 12:24 AM:

I got a 3 month old thats started.. She started barking at a toy coon the wife bought at walmart..

Posted by Joseph Closser on 03-30-2012 12:31 AM:

All kidding aside.. To me a started dog should hunt alone and be getting treed.. It dont mean treeing coon alnite everynite but it should be starting to tree coon..

Don't sound like it does it. I really think most folks on here are expecting to much for a well started dog.

Started is a dog that is striking and getting Treed on its own most of the time. Barking at a coon doesn't mean its even lightly started Hell.....if they aren't finished , they are only started lol

Maybe I'm lucky but I haven't had one i'd called finished till they were at least three or four years old. I've had sone less than 2 that i could count on getting coons with but they kept getting better so they weren't topped out yet. JMO
