Impossible question!!!!!!!!

3 guys walk into a motel, and pay $30.00 to share a room. (Each guy pays $10) The clerk realizes the room should only be $25.00. The clerk takes 5 - $1 bills up to return to the men. They didn't want to split the $5 - 3 different ways to they each took $1, and gave the clerk $2 as a tip. Each guy payed $9 after they were returned their other dollar. $9X3guys = $27. The clerk only kept his $2. $2+$27 = $29.00. Where did the last dollar disappear to?

The dollar did not vanish. The men essentially received $1.67 each back out of the $5. Then the men tipped the clerk .67 cents each.
Multiply $1.67x3 and that gets your $5.00.
Multiply .67x3 then subtract this amount from the original $5 and that is the $3 that the men kept leaving $2 to give to the clerk.

HUH??? The 3 men got back $1.00 each as stated in the first thread.....not $1.67

It's a twister question as it makes it appear the men paid $27 for the room, but the room was only $25.

$1.67 * 3= %5.01 That really throws the math off.

.67*3=$2.01 .

You're really not helping matters.

It has something to do with multiplying 9 by 3. If you go through the equation in the original order a dollar (YES Intellectualist) does truly end up vanishing.

Tully, they paid $30 for the room. Were given a refund of $5 since the room was $25. They kept $3 ($1 each) and gave the bell hop $2.

$30 - $5 = $25 + $3 they kept + $2 tip = $30

No they did not. The only way you can find the $1 is if you take into account the men received $5 and split it between them and then each of the men forked over an equall amount to the clerk to come up to $2.
My method still works but it I guess now that I read it again it is a little more confusing my way!!!

Dollar isn't missing, the wording of the question is a twister to make it appear $1 is missing.

If you do elementary math that I posted above, you know there is not a missing dollar and don't need to do the crazy math you did above that didn't even add up right LOL.

They originally paid 30. Not 25. Received 5 in change. Gave 2 to bell boy, and split the 3 evenly. If you give a 10 for something and get 1 back in change you only paid 9.

They paid $30 originally.

They received a refund of $5 for the room since the clerk overcharged $5 for the room.

So that means that the room now cost $25.

The $5 refund they were given, each person kept $1 for $3.

$5 minus the $3 they kept leaves $2.

They give that remaining $2 to the clerk now leaving $0.00.

Thus $30 original room price - $5 refund = $25 new room price + $3 they kept + $2 tip = $30

I showed my math , now show your math to show the missing $1.

Here it is in subtraction:

$30 - $2.00 Tip = $28 - $3.00 they kept = $25 - $25 room price = $0.00
