Shining coon in Michigan?

Is it legal to shine coon in Michigan for harvesting purposes?

Posted by buck brush on 11-09-2011 01:19 PM:

you have to have a dog under the tree

Thanks for the info!

Where can I find that?

Posted by Larry Atherton on 11-09-2011 03:07 PM:

Actually, Buck Brush is wrong. Here is the law:

3.605 Raccoon hunting, seasons; taking raccoons doing or about to do damage, person taking considered permittee.

Sec. 3.605 (1) The open season for taking raccoon by hunting shall be October 1 to January 31, except that the open season for nonresidents taking raccoon by hunting shall be November 15 to January 31.

(2) A property owner or their designee may take raccoon all year on property owned by the person when raccoons are doing or are about to do damage to the person's property. A person taking a raccoon under the authority of this subsection shall be considered a permittee as defined by section 5.50 of this order. A written permit is not required, and the person shall be authorized to take raccoon all year by otherwise lawful hunting and trapping methods. Notwithstanding the other provisions of this order, a person taking raccoon under the authority of this subsection may take raccoon at night from July 15 to September 14 using artificial lights, similar to the type ordinarily held in the hand or on the person, in possession of an unloaded firearm while following dogs and at the point of kill for the purpose of taking raccoons if using a rimfire firearm .22 caliber or smaller.

History: Eff. Mar 31, 1989; Am. 9, 1989, Eff. Sep 1, 1989; Am. 10, 1993, Eff. Sep 1, 1993; Am. 7, 1998, Eff. Sep 1, 1998; Am. 2, 2003, Eff. Apr 12, 2003; Am. 2, 2005, Eff. Mar 11, 2005; Am. 9, 2005, Eff. Jul 8, 2005.

In fact, if you read check out the "On Patrol" section of the law enforcement division, you will see that the only tickets written for coon hunting have been for shining.

Well here it is straight from the main CO office in Lansing. The officer said coons may be taken by Dog or by the aid of a call period. He said he would watch you for a while first if no dog was heard , throw that light on a deer and your carrying a gun, means a ticket he decides to check you and you dont have a call means a ticket, he finds your gun is loaded and your not about to take a coon out of a tree means a ticket. Shine the wrong thing while carrying a loaded gun and not even in possession of a squaller is about to get exspensive.

Posted by Todd K / UKC on 11-09-2011 03:59 PM:

I'd like to take that "calling" thing a step further. I don't think it's legal to walk around shining trees and blowing your coon squaller to find eyes to shoot out. That cannot meet the legal definition of "calling".

"Shining" isn't "hunting" anyway so why be concerned about it?

C'mon Man!!!!! .........

Larry

i reread what i posted in my first post and i stated it wrong i have changed it sorry

not going to start a debait with any one , BUT i will tell you this there was a man in Niles Mich. back in the 70 when coon hides was worth something that got caught flooting the rivers and creeks and killing a truck load of coon every night,he got caught, he not only got a tichet for unlawful taking of coon he lost his truck his boat his gun and his hunnting rights in the state of Mich for 10 years, you may ask how do i know this i huntted with the fur buyer he sold them to for 20 some years and they tried to take his coon from the buyer he had a heck of a time. in the state of mich if you have a gun on you and you are walking throw a corn field and they see you shining trees they can give you a ticket .
now we will find out since some people has openly said on this board that they do head light coon because if you do not think the DNR does not moniter this board you better think again, there is two things head lighting coon does it hearts the coon popalation and makes your dog a slick treeing dog .
by the way one of my best friends and one of my huntting partners is a retired DNR officer if he was not out of state bird huntting i would have him get on here and tell you all what the laws are.
Allen you are right, a head lighter is not a coon hunter. JMO

shining trees

The way I see it and they way I do it is that if my dog does not tree it I will not shoot it. If there is more than one coon in the tree then I just give them one and leave the rest. That is the way I coon hunt.

why I'm concerned

Some folks just had a coon contest and the winner killed 90 coon in a night. Shining was permitted in this contest. I love the sport not the killing, and that was no sport!

Mike, you are a coonhunter!
This is the way I hunt, and that is the way it should be done.

90 coon, in 1 night,????? CMON MAN!

It don't take a lot of talent to shine trees.

I live in Michigan ,we have a lot of Coon , we have homeowners using fly bait ,car kills and coyotes killing a bunch ,, so why not shine ,or tree them at least these guys are doing something with them ,,$$$$$$$$$$ so if they are hunting their spots and want to kill them all ,so be it . Just my opion

Posted by msarka on 11-09-2011 10:19 PM:

shining

I am not complaining about people shining trees or killing a ton of coon in a night. All I meant by it was that I would not do it. Besides I would not want to carry them out anyway.

I aint bored,or worried about nothing, I have a good job,I have a good hobby,I have my health, and a wonderful family, life is good here.
I just don't enjoy head lighting coon, in mass quantities, I just like training and coon hunting.
Too each their own,you have a good day.

Have any of you hunted in owensound ,we made 5 drops up there and we seen 76 coons and quit counting , all of them was around corn fields ... it was amazing .... and I know places in Michigan just like that ....

Posted by SEMO on 11-10-2011 02:37 AM:

90- 76-59 coons in 1 night WOW Come down here to southern missouri, if we killed that many in a season we wouldn;t have any coons to tree.

Posted by TREESLAMMIN on 11-10-2011 03:04 AM:

Hell come to Michigan and we can have more fun ,maybe we can tree 30 + ... door is always open ......

Posted by BlueMoonJake on 11-10-2011 08:37 AM:

It's the same over here in SW Missouri, anymore if you tree more than three or four a night your having a heck of a night.
There are many nights your lucky to tree a couple in two or three hours. So far the best night we've had is five, and three of those were up one tree. Hide season starts the 15th, we're not going to kill many, just enough to keep the young dogs fired up. We've got decent dogs, it's hard to get very many young hunters interested in our conditions.

Posted by Dale Young on 11-10-2011 04:25 PM:

You don't get those big #'s everywhere in Michigan or every night. Always amazes me how you can hunt one night and never get a bark and the same spot tomorrow night make it look easy with the same dogs.
The law's on shining , or interpretation of, could get most of us in trouble on any given night . Most will look around now and again to see what's out just out of curiosity and enjoy seeing game of most any kind while we're out .

Posted by TREESLAMMIN on 11-11-2011 02:07 AM:

I had a DNR officer at my house today over deer hunters , and I ask him about it and he said isn't against the law to shoot a Coon in a tree that hasn't been treed ,,,, that was his ruling ............

Posted by Coonersdog on 11-12-2011 01:10 PM:

Popped in here for clarification on the topic. Here's the law
WCO 2.4
Regarding using artificial lights for taking coons. Firearm may only be loaded or arrow nocked at point of kill.

A. Person is following dogs and is at point of kill for taking a treed raccoon during the open season.

D. Taking a raccoon with the aid of a game or predator call during the open season.

Hope that makes it clear as mud.
