You ever wonder.....

How many hounds have went to waste and never had a fair chance being hunted because of being in the wrong hands??
I bet the numbers are off the charts

I'll go ahead and fess up. I have a Rat grandson that was basically a natural, at 6 months old he would check older dogs and if they were right he'd tree with them, if not he went and found a coon. I got so attached to him that I can't stand the thought of anything happening to him.......... Yesterday while taking him for his walk he winded and came treed, yep 3 coons on top of an old house in our back pasture, yeah I know what a total waste of talent..........So I know of at least one!!!

I got 2 young dogs right now that both need hunted and I am having trouble hunting them both as much as they need. Both bred to death and doing good.

I have been trying to sell one and no takers as of yet.

I often wonder where and what is happening to all these pups that are being born because there just aren't that many coon hunters and I would go out on a limb and say at least 95% of pups that are born never get an honest chance to become a finished hound and that's a real tragedy!!!!!!! We as hunters owe these pups that we think much of a better chance and get rid of the people that are in it for the money and just the money and not worried about bettering the breed!!!!!! Jmo

Like POTOMAC said money has to do with alot of it. Alot of people are just breeding pups to make a little money. IMO the only real reason to breed dogs is in effort to produce a better coondog.

Well what is your idea of breeding a better coon dog? What may be better for you may may in my opinion be worse. Know what I mean?
Now I could understand what you were saying if people are breeding dogs with genetic traits that were bad. Hip displacia and such as that. I believe that is genetic isnt it?

I give em all I've ever had a pretty good chance. They better take that chance and run with it though. Don't take much for me to not like one! Im not going to mess with one I don't like. They are born every day and I'll get another. I have a young hound here now. I've hunted her a yr. She's ok but just don't have a mouth like I want. So Im pretty much done with her. Even though she can run and tree her own coon.

There are a few I would love to have back. I still make mistakes with dogs but not near as bad as I did when I started. But then there are some I wasted WAY to much time on. YOu live and learn.

I can relate to you there, if a dog doesnt suite me good enough by a certain age its gone... The only dog I have right now is a 21 month old walker female and she's honestly all I need.. She's got a good mouth, independent, accurate, and young

Same here. My first pup taught me alot more than I taught him. They are still teaching me.

Getting pups into the hands of competent hunters/trainers that will give them an honest chance is a chronic problem that plagues the coon hunting world. I only see it getting worse.
Lets face it, hunter numbers and the amount of ground they have to hunt are shrinking every year, and have been as far back as I can remember.
Another part of the problem, unfortunately,is that breeding and feeding hounds has become a way more popular sport than than actually hunting with them.
I personally think that taking a well bred pup, to a night after night coon treeing finished dog,is one of the easiest things I know how to do. 95% of my training technigue involves opening the kennel door...........a huge barrier that some can't seem to overcome.

Getting pups going and bringing them along is a lot of work. I think we have kind of divided into two groups trainers and comp. hunters. if a man is busting the hunts wide open he's not going to have time for pups and if a man is serious about his training he cant be at a hunt 5 out of 7 nights.

Excellent point. The guys doing most of the winning are almost never the guys who got the dog there.

intellectualist and greatlakehunter your right my idea of a better coonhound may be different then yours and many others. I am no top breeder and I doubt any of the crosses I make will ever make that big of an impact on the breed. I do not know the science behind breeding, but when I do breed I put a lot of thought and preperation into it. My number one objective when breeding is to hopefully produce a dog that will perform, and that I can enjoy.

I disagree with most of you, starting a pup is the easiest thing you can do if you are starting with a good bred pup yes (EASY)

i spend very little time with my pups except playing in the yard till they are 4 mo old,
but i agree with some of you i dont have patience for stupid cause you cant fix stupid, once my pup wants to hunt and tree they go by themselves 90% of the time ,
its about timing and putting that pup in the right spot, what i mean when im hunting a 5 1/2 mo old pup i patch hunt or a fence row ,
in 2011 i have started and sold 3 pups #1 was splitt treeing at 6 mo old shes in alabama #2 was split treeing at 11mo old his 2nd time out hes in oh #3 treed his 1st coon by himself at 5 1/2 mo old and hes in oh
when they are naturals starting a pup is fun and easy,

Most people chuck them pups in a pen till they are 7 to 10 months old or older pull them out take them with a pup trainer and wonder why they don't lead and why they are puking in the box.If you read 90% of the adds for young dogs for sale most is I don't have time to hunt, if a man isn't going to take time to hunt one he probably hasn't done anything else with him either. I notice you live in Ohio a lot easier to pick through those naturals when you have a coon population to expose them to. I also would be willing to bet you are fooling with pups from a specific bloodline or female. The playing in the yard till they are 4 months old makes a big difference in pups vs one that has not had that.

Most of these dogs bred today don't have any drive and desire and a lot more dogs will look good in Ohio that aren't worth the powder to smoke them in va.md. Are a lot of southern states in thin coon!!!!!

I'll agree with that. Not a lot of dogs have the drive and ability to look good night after night in thin coon.

i'm in coastal nc and until last night i thought coon had gone extinct. yea, i'd say they're thin here. but then again, if i had a good dog, i might find that there are a lot of coon here.

i have to admit i have ruined a few by not hunting them when they needed hunting the most. i would say many times we have to many young dogs and we hunt the one the like the most and the other one sits. i have been guilty of this. we want to have more than one good dog but at times we neglect the ones that could have offered us the most enjoyment. now days i try to work dogs from start to finish before i move on to the next project. i still get bogged down at times, try to keep focus. and then there are many dogs who go to homes where they simply don't know how to train a dog.

Not really. I can give you the perfect example. You know your dog better than anyone so if he is lacking something then you would know that.
The example is this. I finally found a few places about two hours east of me on I-40 to coon hunt.I can hunt with no feeders out and easily tree 3-4 coons a night on average at these places.
I can easily also not tree 3-4 coons in 5 nights hunting here where I live and that is with multiple feeders out!
Treeing coons is about having a dog that can get it done, but it is more about what kind of coon population you are in in my opinion. If coons are thin, you are going to have a much harder time getting a pup going than if you can turn him on three or four a night.
Many of these coon hunters on this board would be out of the sport if they lived where coons were thin and they knew it was going to be alot of work to get to a dog day in and day out when and if it treed!
There was a clump of persimmon trees on some game land last year that I know was hunted by myself and others 3-4 nights a week and only one coon was caught in or off the persimmons.
If this same clump of persimmons had been two hours east of here, there would have been no persimmons on it after about two nights!

LOL Alot of people think everybody is in it for the money. So show me the money. I sure don't see it. When I want a pup, I breed my own for me. Before I do it I already have people that want one of those pups. Out of those, only two deliver, the rest are no shows. That leaves me with four or five ravenous pups by the time they are 4 months old and I might take $100 to get them off the feed bill. LOL They can use them on Coons, Hogs or possums or yard dogs for all I know. At least I got the pick of the litter.
