If there is a coon track within .75 mile ( I guess that's around 1200 yards or so ) of me I want to see that sucker treed. But that's just my opinion.

Anyhow I want em to stay gone till they tree one or I pull around to catch em. I dont care if they do circles or turn back flips on the way. I do want them to kinda hunt in the direction I send em though...__________________

You can't train a dog to go Michael, you know that!
I want mine to go exactly how far it takes to strike and then tree it. If thats 15 yards fantastic, if thats 2 miles so be it.

I haven't impacted him a lot but I have a little bit. The first thing is, I learned to take him new places and don't turn him loose in the same places over and over and over. I changed it up and rotated and took him to one of my buddy's spots on a really really good feeder. Treed one in 100 yards. I kept doing that and he didnt' seem like he ran as far as fast as he was. Also, sometimes, and it is VERY rare, but sometimes he would make a HUGE loop and come back without striking at all. When he does that. I PET HIM AND PET HIM AND PET HIM. Let him know that's OK. Like I said that has hardly ever happened since i owned him but the few times it did happen I tried to make a REALLY big impression on him that it is OK TO COME BACK if you have made a really really big circle in there and not struck a coon. Just these two things have seemed to help a little. Not much but a little. He will tree a coon 50 yards in front of you or he will tree a coon over a mile from you. But If he makes it in there 3 quarters of a mile and don't strike I would prefer the dog to make a loop and come back. But everybody likes something different. Oh also I will say this before it even gets started, if you live up north in the land of many coons and your reading this, just disregard the entire thread alltogether because chances are you have no idea what we poor southern boys are even talking about.
WELL BOYS i live in the north and round my house dogs gotta get in the dark. i like a dog to hunt the woods u cut them in if they have hunted the woods and aint struck a coon then they should check in. jmo.but u aint gonna make a dog go or slow down there gonna hunt the way they want

And I mean that with the utmost respect. You northern guys have your problems and we have ours. Our biggest just happens to be coon population. lol
I hunted with a guy that had a hound that liked to get gone, find him treed some where. he started calling him out after he was gone so long. after a while the dog started making a loop, if he did not strike anything he would come back. it seemed to work for him, but he patch hunted most of the time.
i live in NY its just like any state some areas have alot of coon some dont where i live in NY there are not alot of coon. u drive hour and h half north of me u will be in coon.. but i like a dog to make a 900 yard circle or so. right now working on young dog. dont think he is gonna range that far time to single him out well see.

Use SunSpot Lights, so bright its like the sun came out at night !!!
I realy wouldn't mind the range so much if it turned out I could hear a race. But the rangy ones that go a mile to start a track seem to always be treed by the time I can race up to them in my truck. I might as well be hunting a silent dog for the enjoyment I get out of that.
