Just wondering do they require you to shoot the nuisance coon? What's the reasoning about not runnin your hounds year around if you are not shooting them?We run dogs all year and it does'nt seem to hurt anythig....Tom

coon

gotta be carring gun, coon that are considered a nuisance by land owner, permission to kill by landowner.

Posted by eugene kares on 05-23-2011 11:11 PM:

it is from april 16th to july 8th,they moved it up a week from the 15th to the 8th.

Posted by micooner on 05-24-2011 12:48 AM:

Its called quiet time for whatever reason. can run in licensed events and trial areas, and private land using the so called nuisance/damage control.

Almost... it got changed this year. used to close from 2/1 to 2/14 and from 10/15 to 11/8. Now it is only closed from 10/25 to 11/8 which is the last 2 weeks before our hide season starts. Its changed alot over the years when I was young it was closed from feb to aug. then they changed it to feb to may thats how it still was in the early 90's. Walker days was always in april and Ind hunters couldn't legally hunt their dogs to tune them up unless it was a licensed night hunt. Had to sneak hunt.. don't miss them days at all...

would michiganders be allowed to come down and run dogs? what kinda lisence would i need...got some friends in walkerton that have hounds and wouldnt mind the hour trip a couple times during our closed season

Have you seen the letter of clarification from the DNR?

I can send you a copy if you would like. It basically removes the requirement of showing damage.

I am no genius but it is probably so the coon and other animals can raise their young without being harassed. Just a thought.

Yes that is the reason

but they will still let fox hunters train there dogs during this time of year with permits on state land??? that is the part i dont understand...

Actually, there is scientific proof that running coon hounds during the spring is not detrimental to coon populations.

The state fur-bearer biologist seems more willing to listen than the head of the Wildlife Division. It seems he prefers the thought of giving the animals a break over actual science.
