Hitchens' Luke Plott X Collie

Picture of Luke treeing a fox squirrel along a creek bank. I've been hunting Luke pretty hard. He's really crankin' on squirrel and coon. Nothin' better than a good combination dog. Thanks for looking.
Justin.......On the chance of sounding dumb, when you say collie, do you mean border collie? Thanks

Took Luke out yesterday and made 8 trees and seen 7 squirrels. Went out last night and treed 2 coon, caught a opossum and a skunk. Talk about a combination dog. Wasn't real happy about the last two but what can ya' say?

Adding a nontree dog for brains. Interesting. How many make good tree dogs? How do they reproduce after a few generations?

A friend of mine has 3rd and 4th generation dogs from these crosses and they are awesome tree dogs. we'll have 4th generation pups on the way whenever the female comes in heat. I've hunted every breed there is except feist. This is the easiest dog that I've ever trained. He minds better than my kids.

Interesting, How many make squirrel dogs out of a litter? Do you linebreed the orignal crosses? or add more collie?

I'd be lying to you if I told you how many made squirrel dogs, but I do know more make it than not. The cross that 628ejm is going to make will be linebred. They have been taking the plott and collie cross and breeding some cur into them with success. I'm not educated on which type of cur it is but I think it's a mixture. I haven't personally seen any with more than 50% collie but I'm not saying they're not out there. I know that Dick Bare has probably trained over 50 of them. I don't know if you know him or not but in my opinion he's the best cur dog man and trainer there is. He really likes them. There are people that can tell you more about them than me. I know I've hunted with a lot of them though.

Thanks for the information. I hadn't heard of it and was wanting to know some more about them. Sounds like they are a good cross.
brains.
i have seen border collie crosses for 50 years. fox hound beagle bird dog etc. at one time up here when i was a kid every farmer had one hound and one border collie. they were used for coon deer rabbit fox and so on.the border collie is classed as the smartest dog on this earth. dick bare and i chatted about the border collie 20 years back on his visits to canada. it was a normal thing to do here to cross them. also i have seen and owned one that could stay with any coon dog made, and yes on the moon cold nights. these were working collies from big sheep farms. it would be hard to find that type or blood today in the area i live in today
Re: brains.
quote:Good point David. I've heard so many stories about the dogs the ol' farmers had like you're talking about. How they would work cattle, guard the farm and run off and tree all day or night. Seems like every story the dog is either collie or some sort of shepherd. I often thought the plott put the tree in there and the collie the brains. Maybe the collie had as much to do with the tree.

Do any of you guys remember the super sport dog Dick Bare had? He was a mixed up dog with shepherd and collie mixed in there. I've hunted with a lot of awesome dogs and he was by far the best coon and squirrel dog I ever followed. He reproduced very well, then his pups reproduced well and then his grandpups. I got to thinking about some of these dogs and one thing these dogs do is go hunting and go hunting fast. I started a dog years ago that was a grandpup to ol' sport, his name was wheeler. He hunted second to none and had the brains of the collie. I sold him to Marty Stanton and he made him one fine dog. Like wheeler my Luke dog gets it done in a hurry. Just wonder which side the hunt comes from? Any Ideas?
Nice looking dog , anyone ever seen a heeler/coondog cross ?

collies
hi justin.the heeler cross ones that i seen just want to kill no bark. now the aussie sheppard is a different dog, a friend of mine dairy farmer has two of the aussies the female is a great cow dog also when chores are done and its getting dark she heads to the bush, she has treed lots of coon on her own. the male s a good calm dog on cows but has no hunt, randy you will enjoy justin he and i threw alot of emails back and forth and the kid impresses me alot. i have no doubt hes got a top dog ready to go when asked, ps the aussie male the guy gets 900 stud fee.. justin when i was a kid they had huge sheep trails here, think about this, a flock of sheep would be put out close to half mile away. the handler would hold up one finger and send the dog. one sheep was brought back too a small pen beside the handler. then he would hold up two fingers and so on.what other breed of dog could we get to do that.
David. I agree 100%. If a dog has some brains and the person has any idea whatsoever how to train a tree dog eventually they'll catch on. I'd rather one have brains that I can teach to tree than have the tree but no brains to use it right. I have an Aussie that runs loose on my farm. He is a very intelligent dog. He also trees some game, took very little effort to teach him anything. Watching a good stock dog work is amazing. I would love to watch one of the stock dog trials. To me the way a tree dog handles is just as important as anything. I like to teach them to hunt with hand signals. It's nice to be able to point them in the direction you want them to go when they're checking in. When he comes flying by me I can snap the snap on the leash and when he hears that he'll be sitting at my feet. Takes a lot of hours in the woods to get that dog to handle the way you want him to. I was talking to Marty Stanton and the wheeler dog he had he could be a mile from the truck and tell that dog to go to the truck and when Marty got to the truck he'd be in there. That's where the brains come into play. Better than having a dog drag you to the truck by the lead strap.
