I would help anyone find a coon even if it don't benefit me. I want to make sure its a coon. lol

I will try my best to find a coon, wether its my dog under it or yours. Nothing pisses me off more than handlers standing around not making any attempt to find a coon.

I am 21 and have been coon hunting since I was 15, but just in the past month have got into Nite hunting. I always look for a coon like it would win me the hunt even if my dog ain't under it. The fact that this is even an issue is ridiculous. It is selfish and unsportsman like not to put your full effort at every tree. Already I have met people like that and it makes me sick. This is the kinda behavior that deters so many people from participating in our sport. I do this for fun and if my dog earns a title in the process it's just a bonus. The people that have forgotten that are killing this spot that we all love so much.

I always look and really try to find a coon. I still love to see a coon in a tree even after all these years and coons.

I personally have found and shown many coon that caused me to loose the cast. I couldn't do it any other way and feel sorry for anyone who could.

The overwhelming majority says they'll help find a coon regardless, but clearly that isn't what happens in the woods.

I'll help anyone find they're coon, but as soon as I see them not extending the same courtesy to myself or another cast member, it stops. I won't go blind, but I'm not going to work harder that everyone else to find someone else's coon unless they're working equally hard to find everyone's.

I will say hunting in another registry, I've had other handler's find my dog's coon faster than I could find it. I've always found that to be interesting. In UKC, I've only seen a couple handlers ever go blind, but rarely does someone else say they found the coon if they're dog isn't there. They'll look at when you show it to them but there is a whole lot of standing around with a light in the air or look for 2 minutes and shut they're light off. Another thing interesting, is in other registry's events I've never had anyone tell me they're light is dying and they need to conserve it.

Posted by jculler8 on 02-24-2011 04:19 AM:

I will go out of my way to find a coon for someone. That's the name of the game. I'm out there in the woods to see coons being treed. However, if I can clearly see there's nothing there and the handler(s) of the dog(s) tree continue to shine, I will shut my light off and wait for them to finish. Usually in that situation, the best thing to do with the last couple of minutes to shine is shut everything down and head out and look on the way out. I've been on a few casts where guys missed out on scoring a coon because they shined the full 10 under the tree or finished scoring the tree early.

Finding coons

I've always helped people find their coon.

I've always had people help me find mine.

People rarely admit dishonesty to themselves , much less on here.

I dont look very hard for your coon if you act like a jack a$$, If that makes me less honest, so be it.

Posted by Frank M on 02-24-2011 05:09 AM:

I will try and find anyones coon! Even if it beats me in the cast always have always will. One thing I won't stand for is a person not shining a tree, if I'm judging the cast guess what bud load your dog your done! Don't try and tell me your helpin shine a 60 foot oak in july from one place the first time I will give a warning the secound sorry bud load your dog. As has been stated in other KC's most of the time the coon is found while tieing the dog at the tree. Anyone that has hunted with me will tell you I look harder for the coon that beats me than I do my own. Its just how I play the game.

LOL! Same here. Another reason I hate judging, because I feel it is the judge's duty to make an honest assessment of each tree scored. Sometimes that gets in the way of giving someone equal treatment. I believe in the Golden Rule... do unto others... but buddy if you want to be a jerk, I'll look at your coon after you can show it to me and I'll stand here and enjoy my dip until you've found him and listen for my knucklehead to get wooded off in the distance while you're sweatin' and bustin' a trail through the briars around the tree for me.

I can't tell you how many times I've been judging and I'm flat busting my tail to shine a tree, mine or someone else's, only to turn around and see them standing there smoking a cigarette. If that's the way they want to be, I won't screw ya, but I ain't gonna help ya either.

I shine every tree made during my cast, & make every attempt to find the coon in everyone of them, if he's there, & it doesn't make any difference if I benefit, u benefit, or nobody benefits. If it's there, I want it plussed, if it ain't there I want it minused, & if someone wants me to vote to circle a tree, then there needs to be a "real" den, a big nest, or leaves/vines/junk that are so thick they that they honestly could conceal a coon.

"Show me where in that tree he could be, that we wouldn't be able to see him, fellas?"

That 1 little question tends to clear-up how to score a great, many trees!

If I find the coon that beats me, then I'll show it to u... UNTIL, you go blind on me. Call me a crook or a cheat or whatever, but I'm gonna treat each cast member the same as they treat me. If the other 3 handlers on my cast are trying to do right, I'll find your coons all night long, because if we're getting along, then I'm having a great time & that's what's important to me. But if you start going "Ray Charles" on me, then I'll be danged if I'm gonna try to find yours. If that makes me a cheater then I guess it just does.

I judge and guide some, very little and comp hunt even less. I want to see a coon, not a spider nor a dark spot. I don't look for a coon long pleasure hunting and I am world renouned for being the best coonfinder around these parts. Tonight when I got there, my buddy wwas coming out of the woods with two coons. his dog had treed in a live oak, quercus virginiana, but he had found them in a naked oak touching. We turned loose again and my bithich got fairly deep and treed in a live oak without a race (now this is Febuary mind you) it had a hollow in the bottom but she was NOT in it. By the time he went 100 feet back to the truck to gett the rifle I had been there for a minute or so and pulled a vine and squallled from a good wide open spot and l pulled her off while his dog had struck 2 hundred yards and sat down in fifty yards in another live oak with a hollow at the base . That is unusual for liveoaks because they are generally sound trees. My bitch came in and honored like she really meant it too. So we looked and squal;ed for a good five minutes and zilch. I got a white lightening head two months agobut if they won't look , they won't look and they won't be seen unless it is a naked tree period.

But getting back to the point at hand; yes, I have seen it time after time when as judge I was behind a hunter with my light off and seen the coon in his light and him not say nothing. So I dilly dally and fart around till time gets close and call everybody to gather up and turn on my light so all can see and it is amaising the number that still can't see.

I dont comp hunt I only pleasure hunt. But I still walk around the tree a couple of times before I give up. There have been many times even when the leaves are off that I dont see it until I take a second look looke at the tree. Especially this kill season. I have had a hard time getting these boogers to look. MOst the time I find them they are tucked in the fork with there head down.and I end up finding the tail dangling over the branch.

Why

as the guy with 1st tree do you have the option to search the tree yourslf for a while before others shine ??????? Because they would walk in there "Lights A Blazin" to make him hide his eyes to hurt your attempt to find him.. Why do you think this was adopted ????
