Den boxes (pics)

Putting up boxes is a good way to use up scrap lumber.Although I have alot of den trees on my place,I'm always building something which leaves me with a bunch of scrap. I try not to waste anything.
Hope you enjoy!

what are your measurements, looks like a good way to keep coon in a timbered area where all of the den's have been destroyed? thanks.

Most are 12x14x30. Drill a few 1/4 in holes in bottom for drainage. Look close at pic,you will see 3 in torx screws run through the corner to provide kits a ladder to climb out. I put a slice of hay in for a nest, but you can see they will drag in their own bedding(cedar twigs)in this case. I put them 15-20 ft off ground.

I always wondered how this would work. Thought about it along time ago but never built anything. How many boxes do you have out, and how many have coon living in them?? Great pic

Great idea there, and super pic. We have a lot of pine here in the marsh, most all the hardwood has been cut out.

What is the measurements on the opening? Any closeup pictures?

Very interesting. Nice pics!

I've often thought about building a few of these.

I'd like to see some more pics as well.

I always thought building den boxes and feeders might be a neat idea for a fundraiser for clubs. Something that could be used in youth programs as well. Get some donated material and plan a day with local youth hunters building them and then sell them from the club and put the proceeds back to the youth.

Fester,

Great idea !!! Is the top open ,or is there a top and an entry hole ? If a hole how big is it ?? The timber company has left me with nothing but pine trees I need some of these to hang in the few dead hardwoods they left behind!!! I've been building feeders and putting out for the last few months ..Get some nest boxes then trap and relocate some coon and I'll be in business again !!! Thanks,Dave

More pics

The openings are about 4in tall and 8-12in wide, facing south.

Here's one of my feeders, its about 8ft off the ground(to keep the cattle and deer out). They hold about 3-4 hundred lbs of feed and have a place for a trap.

Thats awesome. I would have to shoot some crows I think if I put it at my house. Seems that unless its spoiled corn, the crows eat as much as the coons...although I work squir dogs too, so this would help with them too. Thanks for the ideas...1 more thing...how do you get those pics of the coons without getting eaten up??lol

I climb the tree, and make sure the cord on the digital camera is wrapped securely around my wrist before I quickly stick it in the hole to snap a pic.

It would be most unfortunate to drop the camera, and then have to decipher a way to get it back. If that happened,I believe the coons would own a new toy, and I would be pouting all the way back to the house knowing darn well that when my wife found out she would get excessively.......LOUD!lol

good pictures and a good idea. we have a lot of den trees here but they're too small for coons. they're great for squirrels. i've been wanting to put some up too. i've got one built from scrap 2" treated lumber. it's heavy too but it'll last a long time.

Here is how you do it. Put up den boxes all over you land with stairs going up to them then take a cast in hunting and every one can walk up the steps and see the coon! + + + + + I better start saving my $$$$$ for land1 LOL

Some thoughts

I've hunted in some areas where it seems about every 3rd tree is a den tree. Might not always see one on the outside, but can come back time after time and run a track and make a tree.

I've also hunted in areas that were clear cut and there wasn't a tree left standing that was big enough to pick your teeth with. In areas like that it seems like the only coon tracks you can find are the ones that are fossilized in stone.

It took Mother Nature more than a lifetime to build this den.

My boy and me built a couple of these in an afternoon.

Both hold coons.

Mark, you got it backwards,if I'm guiding I'll take the cast out to a clear cut and wait for the others to minus out on trash, then I'll take my pup back to my place and rack up a couple of 1000pts. and then go back to the club house and pick up my trophy!

New pics

This afternoon my boy and me checked a couple of our boxes that are easy to get at. It was nice to see they were occupied. A great way to spend an afternnoon with a kid. We have taken some really nice coon this year, however, I have treed more coon and taken less than any time I can remember. It seems as time goes by, I become less and less of a killer each year. Just spending time with him and the dogs treeing a bunch of coons is reward enough. He agrees.

I use (scrap)rough sawn inch lumber. Mostly native hardwood species.

I fasten them to the tree with no 9 fence brace wire. I double wrap the wire near the top and bottom of the box, then twist it up tight with a screw driver.

I face the boxes as Southernly as possible, because the prevailing wind is out of the Northwest.

Some more tips:

I hang my boxes in lesser quality trees,(pines, cedars, hedge, dead snags, etc.) No sense in ruining a good hardwood with wire, lag screws, etc.

I hang them up near a food and water source.

To get coons living in them,I'll usually put some marshmellows in the box and then put peanut butter, used cooking oil, fish oil, etc. on the trunk. Once a coon finds it,they usually set up shop shortly there after.

If squirrels move into the box first, don't be discouraged, once a coon finds the box they will eject the squirrels in a timely manner.

Hope this helps.
