Iowa conibear law
There is a bill HF257 being pushed right now. This would reduce the size of conibears on land to 5 inches. I know alot of dog hunters would like to see this pass so I thought I'd put it on here. I don't normally get involved but I've seen a dog killed this way and it doesn't need to happen. A good trapper will do just as well with footholds.
love it. Does our lobbyist for the IA State Coonhunters know about this?
In Nebraska a 330 needs to be at least 6 ft off the ground or fully sumerged. Im takeing it that they want the 220's the same way.
So, only 110's for a ground set?

I hope it passes. I had a dog get caught in one. Those 500 coon a year bucket trappers will need to learn how to trap.
Remeber one thing...
If the coon hunters get behind this and push hard to pass it, what will the trappers want to take form us??? Our training season?? Dogs in the pen from the first of Feb,to the first of November....

You know I agree with Billy on this!!!!!!!!!
I understand what Billy is thinking maybe hes right maybe not.
We had no season on coon for years and years, the Trappers got one put back on us for no reason 2 years ago.
If I had a chance to get rid of 220's Id take it, You may have a knife in your back tomorrow either way.
As far as i see it, if the coon hunters start conflict with the trappers then that just gives more fuel to the anti's to use to try and shut us all down!JMO. I wouldn't want one of our dogs to get stuck in a steel necklace eather but i could easily see pushing this issue to much could come back to bite ya in the A$$. again just my opinion

I hope it doesn't pass. A 220 used in the right places is a very effective trap that shouldn't harm dogs. A 5x5 does nothing to coon. U can't have them all to yourself

From what I can tell, some of these other outdoor groups don't hesitate to pass a regulation that will negatively effect a houndsmen or hunting dog enthusiast. Most the time they don't even put any thought into it, if it is good for them they go for it.
I don't see why this should be any different. If we had a chance to eliminate or further regulate conibears, I'd jump on that bandwagon in a hurry and get as many friends to come along as possible.

you guys stickin up for the trappers on the conibear issue have never had to face a call from your 16 year old little brother in the middle of the night, bawlin hysterically, cause he had to sit and watch his big brothers best dog that he borrowed die in a conibear cause he couldn't figure out how to get it off fast enough.Might make you have a little different feeling about conibears.

The way i see it Marc is that some one has to end the pissing match between the coon hunters and the trappers. if it keeps going like it is with the trappers and the coon hunters keep wantin to take away or regulate each others sport more and more all the time, pretty soon we aren't going to have any thing left to evjoy. Instead of the different outdoor groups pissing and moaning about each others sport i think we need to stick together
a little bit more or we are all gunna loose what we love to do. And its not just the fight between the coon hunters and the trappers it going on with the deer hunter, the bear hunters, etc., etc, etc! I just think it has to come to an end soon or the dnr is gunna have so many regulations on us that it isn't gunna be fun for any of us to be in the woods, unless ya wana take up bird watchin? Again JMO, everyone's got one

You ever see the trappers or trophy deer hunters saying how we as sportsmen need to work together to preserve our futures?
Its like a group of high school bullies picking on the kindergartners. They don't care. If you're the kindergartner you can continue to give them your lunch and hope they'll stop beating on you, but that doesn't mean they're going to respect you.

I'm not syaing that i am really for or against this issue. all i am saying is what is gunna happen if this law gets passed what else are the coon hunters gunna try to get. I enjoy both huntin' with hounds and trapping. I just don't want to see for my children and their children to not be able to enjoy the things that i love to do. If all sportsmen/women could find a happy medium and not keep trying to run each other out of the woods, our favorite past times will be around for the next generaitions to enjoy.
Why not push for 160's in trail sets? To reduce a trapper to a 5x5 would be like taking our hounds away from us

If my grandkids never knew what a conibear was it would make me very happy.Brogy you are the man.Trappers as a whole could give a hoot about us and the feeling is mutual from me.We as houndsmen have to start lookin out for #1 and that doesn't mean kissing up to the other outdoor groups that never kiss with their lips.

it makes me cringe when i hear guys talk about making 220 bucket sets but it will be a cold day in he11 before i throw in with animal rights activest against any fellow outdoorsmen.you guys sound like democrats.

Brogy, 220's are used more than you think. Look at some of your state trapper boards. The fisher trappers are using them in pole sets.
Look at NY trapping regs. New conibear laws came into effect a few years ago. The trappers pursued it and worked with the houndsmen on it.
In my state conibears are only legal in water sets; but that doesn't keep trappers from making illegal sets. If you want to see this bill pass; just circulate a picture of a dog, caught in a conibear to your legislators. Tom
