HOW TO stop a dog from slick treeing?
i got a walker female and was wandering if anybody has a tip they would share on how to get her to stop slick treeing?
Slick Treeing
Make sure that there is no coon! After you ARE FOR SURE THERE IS NO COON, then whip her and send her on. If she slicks again then do it again! When she trees the coon then pet and praise her and give it to her. JMO best of luck

Breed her to OL RUBE
The first thing to do is spay her.
Then if you can't break her , cull her.
We've got enough "slickers" out there. We don't need any more !

quote:if every dog that treed slick was spayed we would not have any dogs in a very short time.... this has been one of the easiest problems for me to fix that there is.... take a small switch and send the dog on everytime it slicks... even when you dont find a conn send them on when a coon could be there if they are tree dogs it want hurt and they will get better.... jmo but a 100% accurate dog leaves way more coon than a 80% dog and has to go 3 times as far to do it

slick treeing
i would rather have a 100 accurate dog than a dog that slicks tree wouldnt care if they do have to cover alot more ground you will see a coon if a dog slick trees more than it has a coon its just a tree happy dog and i dont care what you do you aint gonna stop it just bred in to the dog all breeds have some that will slick tree but i think the walker breed tops the list i dont know everything but i have fooled with coon hounds from time i was a small boy i going on 61 have seen it all but i am sure theres alot of people out there thats smarter than me but i think if a dog starts slick treeing you not going to stop it just wants to tree on first scent on a tree they gonna stop and tree without checking to see if coon went on jmo
I dont think you can lump slick treeing into one single catagory.
Some dogs will miss more often certain times of year or will just go through streaks then are as accurate as anything.
How you go about fixing it depends on how or why the dog is doing it to begin with.

Yep, you have to be able to identify the reason the dog is coming up empty before you can correct the problem. Different reasons for missing require different methods of correction. It isn't a "one size fits all" thing.

My experience
There are alot of variables that can cause a dog to tree slick. You must eliminate yourself first as a reason. You as th trainer can make a tree dog like we all like to hunt too eager to tree by not using just a little common sense. I have hunted with MANY people with young dogs really doing great get too eager to go the tree. Learn your dog and know when that dog is treed right before going to the dog. Learn the amount of locates the dog makes every time you see a coon and stay back awhile if it does more locating than usual. After you eliminate that reason know the tracking conditions. If tracking conditions are poor and it is a young dog they will probably get much better with more tracking experience and better tracking conditions. My opinion on this point is that these dogs nowadays are bred to tree first and track second. Back when I was younger and training hounds dogs didn't make real good tree dogs until they were 2yrs or over but they would track at a young age. I would never recomend shocking a young dog at a tree unless it is a last resort thing. I like mentioned above use a hickory switch and raise the amount of switching for every consecutive blank tree. Putting too many coon out to a young that's not ready doesn't help matters any either. if you take a young dog out and he trees a couple right you probably be best served to put him up and hunt something else or go home. Never hunt a young dog with another dog that is a slick treer. This is just my opi.nion based on over 40 yrs. of training hounds of all breeds. I personally won't put up with a slick treeing idiot. I'll do my best to turn them around and have many but there is also the time to move on-don't wait too long.
quote:everyone has thier own opinons but if your dog never slick trees you either not hunting him or he is sight treeing... if a dog gets its tail switch every time they pull up short if want be long before they either want tree or make sure they have a coon...the ones that quit treeing cull the others give to me i dont mind hunting one that has been made to go on and find the right tree

Not if we kept breeding the dogs that were naturally accurate.
Slicking is a trait that can be bred out just like any other bad trait. But , it's folks like you that keep us from getting rid of them.

Have some of you ever went back and read anything you have posted on here, Jackbob never says anything worth a hill of beans and now you got this hillbilly56 that would rather have 100 hundered accurate dogs than 1 slick treeing dog, well who in the heck would"nt.........just saying read what you right.
This is gonna sound evil, but....I LOVE hunting with a slick treein' dog. They show you who are the REAL coondogs and who are the me too dogs. Yeah it does get tiring to keep walking into to 1 bald tree after another, but all the while I hear my dog treed off a little ways and he has the meat and the points. Ole slicky wicky has a bunch of bald branches and usually a few me too me too doggies with him. Yep, throw a slick treer in there and MY dog will show you the coon! And that I will lay money on!!!! Just ask any of the guys I hunt with and they will tell you I ain't lying.

if I had a hound that did not slick he would be a world champion in every registery, and be getting rich off all those people wanting to breed to him. with the hound I have now he will slick, sometimes a little to much, but he has looked pretty good with some of the good hounds he has hunted against.
Would I breed him like he is, probably not. he is a long way from being perfect but so far I have not found anything that would make me want to knock him in the head.
all you guys talking about your perfect "always got the meat hounds" should get off your a$$ and go win the world. 200 plus always beats 2000 circle
