This Deb,
Do you have anything for her to lay in? Like a crate, a kids pool or even an old plastic dog house or some sort of an enclosure, even a BIG carboard box will make her feel safe.
She will want something to "hide" in, it is just instinct. Maybe that is why she is so anxious, she feels the need to make a "nest" If you have an old piece of carpeting to put in it it will help with the pups being able to manuver around to get a teet.
Keep us posted on her progress!

WE ALWAYS USE THOSE LITTLE $5 FLEECE BLANKETS YOU CAN GET AT WALMART. LOL. EVERY OTHER TIME WE GO OUT THERE WE GET ONE JUST TO PUT BACK FOR BIRTHING PUPPIES ON. BECAUSE IT IS MESSY, AND THERE IS ALOT OF FLUID WITH IT.
WE USUALLY CHANGE WHEN YOU CAN REALLY TELL THE BLANKET IS GETTING WET DURING BIRTH, THEN AFTER BIRTH IN THE AM, AND AT NIGHT. UNLESS IT'S GETTING SOILED WORSE THEN CHANGE WHENEVER.
KEEPING PUPPIES WARM AND CLEAN IS THE BIGGEST KEY TO THEIR SURVIVAL THE FIRST FEW DAYS - FIRST WEEK.
REMEMBER THEY CANNOT REGULATE THEIR OWN BODY TEMPERATURE THAT IS WHY THEY SNUGGLE WITH MOM AND SIBBLINGS TO KEEP WARM.
IF YOU NOTICE THEM BEING A LITTLE COLD, BIND THE AREA UP A LITTLE SMALLER, AND YOU CAN ALSO PUT WARM WATER IN 2 LITER COKE BOTTLES IN THERE AND THEY WILL SNUGGLE UP TO THEM TOO. KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THE BOTTLES THOUGH BECAUSE AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS THEY WILL COOL OFF AND HAVE THE REVERSE EFFECT.
GOOD LUCK, AND KEEP US POSTED!

made a bed for her, getting box from home depot tomorrow. got a heating pad, mom told me so,lol, and i am on my own.
Having some kind of whelping box, like stated above, will help in many ways. It gives mom the Nesting area. It keeps wiggly puppies from straying off. It helps you watch if pups are too hot/cold. Christy nailed all that on the head. It also allows mom to get away from the pups when she needs to do her buisness. everyone likes different sizes. Check out Majestics thread Your Best Guess. There are good pics of their box. Mom & pups have enough room to move and get comfy. It sounds like she is really close. If you start taking her temp normal is 100.5-102.5. Her temp will drop below 100 when she is getting ready. It would be a good idea to take her to the vet when you think she is done for and oxytocin inj. It will help clean her out and with milk let down. Good Luck!

I AM A WRECK. the dog is up my hind end like no tomorrow. good grief. didnt want this litter, but i love my dogs. no matter what. good grief. the grief i say.
i am sooooo worried about her. she is my backbone when i am scared, she is my life line when i am spared. she is my dog. just a dog. but she is my best friend. i dont want anything to happen to her.

Can you
Can you build a 4' X 4' enclosure that's 12" high & put it on top of the bedding to help contain the pups so they won't wiggle away & get cold? Be sure to keep the room temp around 75F-80F for the first 4 days as pups can't generate their own body heat during the first 4 days. Even a big cardboard box will work so she'll feel safe.
ROOM TEMP IS VITAL! I always have lots of towels and sheets there to absorb the water. Each pup should come with a placenta & it's important to know all placentas have been expelled. Also, make sure to break sacs ASAP & get pups dried & breathing if momma has several pups drawing her attention from getting this done quickly. I rub each pup with a towel (with its head pointing downward) & make sure there's no fluid in the mouth.
Christy's advice is excellent.

Go and get a plastic kiddy pool best last minute thing u can do and put in newspapers or send hubby after it while your mid-wifing if a pup scoots out on that cold tile he will die quick, there little belly sides are very fragile the first week.If not you would be better off putting her in a un used closet.

Get her a good box or kiddie pool and put some bedding old newspaper ,let her make her nest and leave her alone.check on her about 1 tima an hour without bothering her.If she goes more than 1 1/2 hour between pups on her first litter she may need a little help, otherwise leave her alone and she'll do what she needs to do.

You'd be better off with a BIG box with a top. One big enough that she shouldn't lay on them. That quilt won't stay like that long. She's going to try to make a nest and she will either push it out of the way or rip it up.

Make sure the air from that register/vent doesn't blow across the pups. That can chill them and get them too cold also.

well, the time is near. i had someone build me a box for her to have pups, i have beethoven on softly in the corner as well as a touch lamp on low.
after 12,5 hours working today, i was told that she has been under a tree in a hole in the embankment that goes aways, trust me, half the day. i have been watching her and let me tell ya, she is close. big pooch, heavy breathing, non eating. even the liver slurpy i made for her with ice. but she wont stay in there without me.
now what?????? i am prepared to watch her, have towels ready , scissors, etc. but man, she will not leave my side.
kell
sorry, the pic of her digs
I'd take the blanket out until after she has them once she goes into labor she will dig and dig and dig and push it out of the way anyway. Plus she'll have it wet in no time and that won't help the pups any.

my first priority is this dog. i am scared. my first litter of pups and she is 7. her first and only litter. i am worried for her. i had a kid once, lol. i know.
She'll be fine. Get some old news paper and shred it up and put it in the box for her to make her nest in. Plus once that gets allw et its easier to clean up.

watch her stools she will poop about 30 mins before the pups are coming, it will be a VERY RUNNY and dark, almost black, and then she will be breathing HEAVY then seem like she stops, then plop, you have yourself your first puppy
http://www.2ndchance.info/caninelaborstages.htm
and my female went over 5 hours without havin a pup (thought she was done) and went out in the morning and she had another one, my female was almost 9 years old. she will also have a green colored fluid coming out of her "lady parts" after she is done, dont worry about that, it is normal. if you have any questions about her labor, call your vet, most of them are very happy to help

He who stirs the pot, deserves to lick the spoon.
A slick surface is best. They will lick the mess up and that is good for them. If you leave the blanket in she will dig around and a pup can get hidden in the blanket and get layed on. Like some has said a small kids plastic swimming pool is best. The cement floor can rub sore on there toung. Just a pool with a heat light over it I think is best thing I have ever seen. If they get to warm they will go to the side of the pool. That keeps them from getting steped on by mom. You will be there at feeding time to see they get to eat for a while and you will know when you don't need to do that any more. Doesn't take long.
Mom will keep the mess clean and germ free. The blankets just hold the mess and give the toe nails something to catch on. When the pups get old enough that mom can't keep up with the mess then you can put in a blanket or shreaded news paper so you can change it regular. Good luck
After the birth keep an eye on mom and make sure she cleans out good. There is a shot you can give them to help with that if they have problems. If they don't it will cause infection.

I put a ledge around the bottom of my pen to keep pups from being laid on. I think it works because my Bluetick had 10 pups and they all made it. I built it out of 1x4's. Here's a picture.

Warm and dry, warm and dry..
I do like skyblu said and help momma dry them off.. I pinch the cord and then cut it.. Helps prevent the bleeding if you pinch it pretty hard for about 5 seconds..
I used the kiddie pool for the first time.. She actually had them in the house (laundry room) with the X-pen around her so she couldn't wander off.. I used sheets that I put the X-pen on.. I would then changed them as needed..
Once the pups were 24 hours old I moved them into the garage and kiddie pool.. This was Sept so it was plenty warm for them.. I put a blanket down, then took a sheet (the bottom fitted one) and put it over the top of the pool.. The elastic helped keep her from bunching it up.. In fact she didn't.. It was easy to change and keep clean..
She raised 10 in the pool.. And I have always in the past built the whelping boxes.. The pool is so much easier LOL
