Bear-hunting season in Maryland opens

The first bear checked at Maryland's seventh annual hunt was shot by Leslie Nightingale, 39, a juvenile substance abuse counselor from Allegany County. The 234-pound bear was shot in Garrett County near the western shore of Deep Creek Lake. (Baltimore Sun photo by Candus Thomson / October 25, 2010)

E-mail Print Share Text Size bs-sp-bear-hunt-1026-20101025
Oakland — — After her mother died of cancer "too young" and her father was diagnosed with the disease, Leslie Nightingale sat down and wrote her bucket list.

Take a cruise, ride in a hot-air balloon, go skydiving, finish her master's degree, shoot a bear.

"You just never know what's going to happen and when it's going to happen," said Nightingale, 39, explaining the list. "Life's too short to hesitate."

On Monday she checked off the first of the items, shooting a 234-pound black bear during the opening minutes of Maryland's season.

"A lot of people don't think a woman can hunt and I don't like that," said Nightingale, a juvenile substance abuse counselor from Allegany County. "I wanted to prove them wrong."

And how. Nightingale's outing was her first time hunting, the first time she fired her borrowed rifle at anything other than a stationary target and the first bear of the state's seventh season.

"I can't believe I'm the first one. I wasn't even expecting it this morning. I was thinking Day Two or Day Three," she said.

A record 3,850 hunters applied in September for 260 permits, which were awarded by lottery. The quota-driven hunt will end when hunters kill 65-90 bears. Warm weather and an abundant crop of acorns are expected to keep the bears from roaming far afield and likely will stretch the hunt into the weekend.

Black bears, once near extinction in Maryland, have rebounded under a Department of Natural Resources management plan. Over the first six seasons, hunters culled 276 bears from the state's growing and expanding population, estimated at 550 adult animals in Garrett and Allegany counties, the hunt zone. However, bear sightings have been confirmed in 12 other counties.

About 70 percent of the harvest occurs on private land. The DNR attempts to match hunters with farmers and other landowners who have had nuisance bears.

Harry Spiker, DNR's chief bear biologist, says hunting, when combined with relocating nuisance bears and educating the public to keep food sources locked away, has helped reduce conflicts in Western Maryland.

Natural Resources Police officers patrolling overnight for illegal hunting activities issued 10 citations for hunting over bait and confiscated a bear carcass that will be processed and donated to a local charity.

"This year, the highlight reel goes to Natural Resources Police for putting in the hours to not only make the cases but also to step in and make the majority of those cases before the bears were killed," said Paul Peditto, director of DNR's Wildlife and Heritage Service.

Hunters charged with violations were: Charles Dock Crigger II, 52, and Earnold Lee Crigger, 52, both of Middle River; Jerome Stanley Ziemski, 55, of Baltimore; Rex Allen Penick, 55, and Terri Lynn Penick, 48, both of Westminster; James Bennett Wood, 42, of Westminster; Donald Sneckenberger, 75, and Doy Sneckenberger, 46, both of Hagerstown; Donald David Gutermuth, 53, of Baldwin; and Lee Clifford Brenneman, 63, of Accident. Brenneman is an outfitter who sets up hunters for a fee.

But the vast majority of those in the woods were there to test their skills and fill their freezers with meat.

Just before 7:30 a.m., Nightingale was sitting against a tree along the western shoreline of Deep Creek Lake, when she heard movement in the woods. In the early-morning light, she made out the form of a large bear about 50 yards away. It stepped behind a tree, and when it emerged, Nightingale was ready.

"I was really nervous and I couldn't sight it at first," she said. "I took a deep breath. I shot it. And then I started to shake."

With trembling fingers, she called her father, who was skeptical, and texted her sister. Then she looked for help to get the bear out of the woods. Her boyfriend, cousin and a friend wrestled the bear into her pick-up truck and to the check station at the Mount Nebo Wildlife Management Area.

Nightingale hasn't decided what she'll do with the hide, but she didn't hesitate when asked what she planned to do with the meat.

"You eat the bear," she said. "I didn't kill it to not eat it."

the non hunters, i would of like to see the woman that saw the cubs and the momma , get in between them, and then say how they didnt bother her. you know that bear would have been dead for attacking her, orphaning the little ones or sending them to the zoo. they just have no clue, the strongest will survive, and us hunters and huntress's will survive,

rmcmillan,

Maryland is surely a diverse state. I'm suprised that you're even allowed to have a bear hunt. Those folks in the Eastern part of the state seem to run the whole state, and the environment they have down there is completely different that what you have in Allegany and Garrett Co. (I went to college in Allegany Co)

WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia hunters harvested 1,828 black bears during the combined 2009 archery and firearms seasons, according to Chris Ryan, Supervisor of Game Management Services for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The preliminary harvest data for the combined seasons in 2009 is the second highest harvest on record behind only 2008.

http://www.wvdnr.gov/2010news/10news006.shtm

VIRGINIA

In Virginia, 2304 bears were harvested during the 2009-2010 bear seasons representing the combined kill from archery, muzzleloader, and firearms. The 2009 harvest was 4.5% higher than the previous state record of 2204 bears harvested in 2008. In 2009, bears were harvested in 74 counties, including counties with no previous record of a legally harvested bear. Successful bear hunters came from 18 other states. Female bears represented 42% of the 2009 harvest which was similar to the 40% females in the 2008 harvest.

http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildli...vestsummary.asp

PENNSYLVANIA

The Pennsylvania Game Commission preliminary bear harvest figures show that 3,036 bears were taken during the recently completed three-day season (Nov. 23-25) and an additional 108 bears were harvested during the two-day archery bear harvest (Nov. 18-19).

So far, the total bear harvest of 3,144 for the two seasons preliminarily ranks as the third highest statewide harvest. However, with the extended bear season in certain Wildlife Management Units continuing through Dec. 5, the total preliminary harvest will increase. The two highest total bear harvests were recorded in 2005 (4,164 bears taken) and 2008 (3,458). In 2006, hunters harvested 3,122 bears during all seasons.

Very Honestly I Believe Maryland Estimated # of Black Bear is WAY OFF !! They keep ref. a Old Est. Study done back in the late 90's .. When Surrounding States have Kill data that the Bear populations are at a current grouth of 9.4% per year !!!!!!

Plus they only Study the small Western Counties .. Heck Maryland
has Bear over the entire State and in Every County inc. the Eastern Shore ..

Bear Hunters' Guide to Hunting Black Bears in Maryland 2010
Maryland Black Bear History and Management
The black bear (Ursus americanus) is the largest terrestrial mammal native to Maryland. Currently, Maryland has a resident, breeding black bear population in the 4 westernmost counties (Garrett, Allegany, Washington, and Frederick), with the highest bear densities in Garrett and western Allegany Counties. Maryland shares this thriving regional population with its surrounding states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The black bear is a species native to Maryland that was once distributed statewide. Bears were historically abundant because of the excellent habitats provided by Maryland’s native woodlands, meadows, swamps, and coastal plain. The black bear population suffered, though, as European settlers colonized Maryland.

The quality of Maryland’s forests was degraded as early settlers cleared the forests to harvest timber and expand agricultural land during the 1600s and 1700s. As a result, the quality of bear habitat was also greatly degraded. In addition, settlers considered bears to be a threat to their own existence and treated them as vermin. In fact, in the mid 1700s, a bounty was established in Somerset and Worcester counties encouraging people to kill bears. Bears were indiscriminately killed throughout the 1800s and into the early 1900s. This indiscriminate killing, combined with large-scale habitat loss through uncontrolled timber cutting and a lack of conservation laws, eliminated black bears and other forest wildlife species from many parts of the state.

By the early 1900s, loss of habitat had restricted black bears to the western portion of the state. Maryland’s last black bear hunting season took place in 1953. By the mid 1960s, the black bear population was nearly extirpated and was restricted to the more remote mountainous areas of Allegany and Garrett counties. In 1972, the status of the black bear was changed from that of a “forest game” animal to being listed on the state “endangered species” list.

As Maryland’s second-growth forests have matured into a healthy and productive ecosystem, the black bear population responded by returning to parts of Maryland that had long been void of bears. Throughout the mid 1970s and 1980s, the Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) noted an increase in bear sightings and bear damage complaints. As a result, the black bear was removed from the state “endangered species” list in 1980 and listed as a “nongame species of special concern”. In 1985, the status of the black bear was once again changed from a nongame species to a forest game species. Hunting seasons remained closed, however, as WHS developed a research and monitoring program for Maryland’s recovering black bear population.

Thanks to the current healthy and productive condition of Maryland’s forests and the conservation measures taken throughout the mid-Appalachian region, the western Maryland landscape is now home to a healthy, thriving black bear population. DNR research and population monitoring have shown an increasing trend in the black bear population since the 1980s.

DNR monitors the population through a variety of annual surveys (Scent Station, Mortality, and Reproduction Surveys), all of which demonstrate an increasing trend in the population. Additionally, DNR periodically conducts population studies, estimating the size of the bear population. A 1991 population study estimated 79 bears in Garrett County (12.0 bears per 100 sq. mi.). In 2000, DNR conducted another population study that estimated 227 adult and subadult bears (27.3 bears per 100 sq. mi.) in Garrett and western Allegany counties. The 2000 study demonstrated a higher density of bears than was found in the adjacent Pennsylvania counties where 21.7 bears per 100 sq. mi. were reported at that time. The most recent population estimate was conducted across Garrett and Allegany counties in May and June 2005. The results of this recent population study yielded an estimated population of 326 adult and subadult black bears in the same area (from Cumberland west). This most recent population estimate reveals a bear density of 39.2 bears per 100 square miles.
