We have one Here thats Called Stinging Nettel and it grows along the Creeks and River .. And its Very Bad to Me and the Hounds !! We also have another Plant that grows along the River call Saw Grass but it has no Chemical Sting, It just "Saws" Light Cuts across your Flesh ..
The Nettel is Very Bad tho !! If you get it rubed on your hand you can feel it come up your arm then your neck and then thru you head !!!!
The Hounds will roll around on the Floor for about an hour after we get home from hunting and Wine and Cry til they fall asleep ...
Here's what the Web had on it
Stinging nettle is a dioecious herbaceous perennial, 1 to 2 m (3 to 7 ft) tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter. It has widely spreading rhizomes and stolons, which are bright yellow as are the roots. The soft green leaves are 3 to 15 cm (1 to 6 in) long and are borne oppositely on an erect wiry green stem. The leaves have a strongly serrated margin, a cordate base and an acuminate tip with a terminal leaf tooth longer than adjacent laterals. It bears small greenish or brownish numerous flowers in dense axillary inflorescences. The leaves and stems are very hairy with non-stinging hairs and also bear many stinging hairs (trichomes), whose tips come off when touched, transforming the hair into a needle that will inject several chemicals: acetylcholine, histamine, 5-HT or serotonin, and possibly formic acid. This mixture of chemical compounds cause a painful sting or paresthesia from which the species derives its common name, as well as the colloquial names burn nettle, burn weed, burn hazel. The pain and itching from a nettle sting can last from only a few minutes to as long as a week.[citation needed]

There is lots of it in Mn. The Amish kids across the road from me picked it last year and sold it for $10 a lb. they collected about 30 lb. You can find it in stores that sell vitamins and natural supplements like DNC stores. It is processed into a power and put in capsules. Also ground and used as a tea by many people. I don't really know what it is suppose to do. I've never tried it.

Next time you get in it get down in the creek and rub some cool water on it. If it is what I call itch weed it will help with the irritation. Didn't say it was a cure all but it does help. You can atleast finish the night hunting befor you have to head for the shower.
We have some kind of little thing here and it only grows in and around corn fields..That crap is BAD!!!! If you get it on your shirt..Might as well through it away..It has tiny barbs on it I recken and it will itch the crap outta you! Grows on little vines that kinda resemble morning glorys..I have no clue what its called though.

I'm glad we don't have that here. The stinging nettle we have has a rosette of dark green leaves near the ground. The stem only gets a foot high and has very white flowers. Normally grows in mowed areas in full sun. Hardly ever more than one or two plants per acre. Once a barefooted kid steps on it he will never forget it. It will almost make you pass out. We also have horse nettle that gets about two feet with puple flowers but I can walk through a patch of it with long pants and it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't try it in shorts because it does have stickers.

stinging nettles, the lower the ground, the higher it grows and stingers on all parts of the plant. I just cut a line (I'm a surveyor) through a fencerow that had them as high as the corn (9 feet?). I really enjoy a beer after a day like that. Our river bottoms are filled with them, have to wear long sleeves no matter what the heat is like.

We have stinging nettle and Rusian thissel. I will take the nettle over the thissel any day. They have out lawed the thissel and it is supose to be killed if you have any but they don't enforce it much. Just got it about 10 years ago or less but it has spread like wild fire. Puts off a million seeds each I think.

itching and stinging
The stuff is pretty thick in the river bottoms around here ! It makes you happy to wear the heavy bibs no matter how hot it is. You also learn quick to walk with your hands up or wear gloves.
There is one benifit to it, you will not have to worry about gamewardens crawling up on you in the dark ! I named my pup Evil Ed, after the sucker broke my finger, after hunting in about 40 acres of stinging nettles the name fit. It used to bother my old dogs, but this pup seems to love it, the crazy thing will grab leaves and eat it like salad ! Still trying to figure whether he is super tuff or stupid .

There's an article about eating it in this month's fur-fish-game they say it's pretty tasty!! MUST COOK IT FIRST!!
I have had my share of itch weed welts. You can't scratch them, it just makes it worse. Between the itch weed, poison ivy, and skeeters, I just don't summer hunt that much any more.

I've run into a bunch here in the MS river delta, inside the levee. I've run into some around Sardis lake as well, but not anywhere else I don't guess.
