Insurance on your hound

Does anybody have an insurance policy on your dog. I called my Insurace company and they don't offer any kind of Insurance. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The hubby and I have talked about getting Insurance also. I think there may be a Web site for pets you can get health insurance for checkups, etc. I will see if I can find it again.

You can insure anything......For a price.

Im sure that the premiums will be very high due to the nature of coonhunting. If your dog is so valuable that you cant afford its loss, I would suggest you sell him/her.

I have insured my coon hounds thru Gordon hartford Ins. co the last hound I had insured for $3000.00 and the premiuem was $85.00 a year. Had one run over took pic. of dog run over to agent and payed for the dog.Don't know about other ins.co never tried to get it thru any other company.Hope this helps

My dog is valuable to me, and a little pricey , but I can't afford it's loss so I will definetly have it insured if I can get someone to sell me some. I offered to get an appraisal done by Wick to my insurance companies and they still won't do it.

We tried to get insurance after we had a real nice promising young dog with an all-grand pedigree killed on the road a few years back. Had our agent check into it. They said they would be happy to ensure the dogs as long as they would NOT be turned loose for hunting purposes! Needless to say, we have no insurance on the dogs!

My dogs would not feel comfortable if they had insurance on them. They would have a hard time hunting looking over they shoulder all the time.

Yes you can get Insurance...

But not from your local agents that you get auto/home/life from.

Never checked into it myself.

you would be suprised... premiums aren't (or wasn't) that bad... i think premiums depend on how much you insure for, but you're right you can get "anything for a price".......

i think you can get it but i can honestly say if i was an agent or underwriter i sure as i sit here would never insure a dog for the obvious reasons not to mention anyone who would or could kill there own dog to collect and only reason i make this statement is more often than not the insured is usually worth more dead than alive

Yes, you can get insurance

I happen to hunt Redbones and work in the insurance field. I recently checked on insurance for a local fellow that won the world-hunt.

Nice Hound

You can purchase what is called a mortality policy that acts like a life insurance policy on your hound.

For $10,000 of coverage he would have had to pay $1,700 for insurance that would pay in the event of death due to disease, accident etc. No coverage for sterilization, or injury only death.

Insurance is higher for females than males due to whelping

This insurance did cover getting run over but unless you pay some serious bucks no coverage for Theft!

There use to be

a company about 15 (or more) years ago that insured comp dogs up to $10K, but I haven't seen anything since that was as structured. Did nothing for people's pets, but if you had titled dogs of value it was worth it. The premium and the insured amount varied and was determined by titles the dog had obtained.

You CAN get mortality and theft ins on dogs through certain carriers. There's more of that avail back east than here out west as there are bigger hunting clubs and organizations. If you call your home owner's ins provider and ask them to check things out they will probably find some options under some of their commercial programs.

I looked into getting some a couple years ago on a dog i bought after hearing about someone who had insurance on a lab.The premiums she was paying were reasonable but only paid about three grand max for a dead dog.I was looking to cover about 10K and the premiums were nuts.Decided against it.Dog got killed on the road six months later.Ouch....

bassett bunnie dogs

Jake,

I hear there are rabbit hunting Bassetts in Griffin GA. Do you know anything about them?

Posted by starplott on 12-09-2004 05:54 PM:

A Lot of you

are talking health insurance. Most vets have little leaflets for health insurance providers.

mortality insurance is something different.

I'll have to ask who mine is actually through, but it is commercial insurance and I went through State Farm which I have my home and vehicle ins. through. The policy that I have will not cover less than $5000 per animal and requires you to insure at 100%. It does NOT cover hunting hounds as there is no coverage for any unsupervised activity resulting in mortality. It also DOES cover theft. I pay $250 a year for $10,000 on one of my dogs. It's commercial insurance and not part of homeowner's.

State Farm does have a policy that is an addition to homeowner's insurance that covers dogs that is a lot cheaper, but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time.

I insure hounds and other sporting dogs. Shoot me an e-mail with your contact information and I will send you and application. Our rate is roughly 7% of the face value for mortality and an additional 3% for theft.

Recent Vet statement and photos are required. Call Scott Engle for a refernce. I insure Mojo for him and Robert.

Thanks,
Scott Lewis

scott so lets say if someone paid 10,000 dollars for a dog then it would be 700 for insurance on them plus another 300 for theft coverage? is that anually or a one time payment just curious i also sent you a pm.

I handled for a fella that had insurance on his hounds. I don't know all the details but do know he had it through State Farm and it did cover dog getting run over. He ran it on several dogs throughout the years. Check with State Farm they could tell you more. I am sure it is like anything though and you get what you pay for.
