Best not ever come south to hunt. We saw no less than a dozen this weekend and were tree chest deep about a hundred yards out in the swamp. We dont get dogs bit often but it does happen. I've only been bitten twice in fifty years.

I love them snakes and summer hunting here in Georgia.Keeps the sissies at home.It really frees up some great hunting territory.I've only had a dog snake bit 1 time, you know with a shock collar and a dead rattlesnake you can teach your dogs to steer clear.

If you hunt down here in Central Texas you will get dogs snake bit. I average about 3 per year.
We have Cotton Mouths, Copperheads, and three different kinds of Rattlers. All will bit you or your dogs.

During the summer I carry three things:
1. A Solu-Delta-Cortef shot. It is a steroid/anti-toxin in shot form. (You can get it from a vet.) If you get it to a dog before he/she gets completely down, IT WILL SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE. I have never lost a dog that I was able to give this shot in the first few minutes after being bitten.
2. DMSO Paste. (You can get it at Tractor Supply) I glob it on the bit. It draws out some of the poison and helps the swelling.
3. Liquid Benadryl. I pour half a bottle down them. It helps with calming the dog down and with their reaction to the snake bit. It also helps with the swelling.

Once home, I use Activated Charcoal Powder and Black Draw Salve on the bite. I give 3 cc antibiotics 3 times a day for the first 5 days.

I killed a 3 foot long copperhead in my yard two weeks ago. Even caught a baby one in my basement a couple of years ago. Can't stand a snake......and trust me.....we don't take em to church.....those folks are nuts.

A smart dog will steer clear with out that they aint dumb they know its dangerous. I have one that will walk out in front of me, and come to a dead stop an walk around it. I have seen him do it a bunch.

ol mr no shoulders here just lay coiled up as 2 pups jumped over him while he lay on my favorite trail to the creek and still didn't strike when they came bouncing back and jumped over him again. he never rattled, or even moved till i put a 22 between his eyes.

I think they are a little crazy also but one Ole Boy told me "you Never forget the first time that you said, praise the Lord and pass me a copperhead". He said if you really have faith they wont bite you.
