Relationship with you dog

My Blue dog is almost 3 years and I have had him since he was 1. I have him and 3 younger dogs, but he is the one that I'm competition hunting for now. I don't treat my dogs like some, I spend a lot of time with them playing and working. OK here's my question. My blue dog will not hunt for nobody but me, if I can't make a hunt and my father-n-law hunts him or my buddy hunts him, he will not hunt for them like he does me. If I send him to my buddy's for a week, he gets depressed and will not hunt at all. What do you do?

I think it depend upon the dog, but many dogs are like this if they get alot of one on one attention from their owner. I can speak to this personally. My 7year old Dual Grand is like this. 2 years ago I was going threw a divorce, and had no place to keep him. I sold him to a guy, and he would hunt, but never showed anything like he was capable. After nearly a year, I bought him back. When I went to the mans house, the kennels were in the back yard. The dog could not see me. I yelled "Joe!" and he started treeing. When I went to him, he acted like a pup, prancing and jumping. The old man is home with me, and will be here until he dies.

Most of the time it is becouse the other handlers do not use the same commands you do. I can't tell you how many dogs I have trained for other people that just won't say the commands correctly. For example Dog sit and they will say sit Dog or Dog sit down. Some dogs will go ahead and do it but most won't do it as well. Some hounds are the same and if there not comfortable with the new handler and there liveing quarters there going to be off. Down side to makeing a pet out of a working dog......
The fix is leave the dog at your friends for a month or so instead of a weak. Time to adust and get him to handle him as close to the way you do as possible. OR AND YOU WON'T LIKE THIS ONE put it out side and treat it like a working dog. No offence intended. I live with dogs too but the hounds become out side dogs when they get old enough to hunt regularly.

I can only answer from past practice...and I think you answered your own question, by stating that you play with your dogs.

Now I'm no ogre, but I keep the process simple with my dogs/pups. I have the same routine everyday, pet the dogs up real good when I feed and water them everyday...thats it. Anything else is training...bench, cage, leash, commands, drags, and loading work. In the woods they get petted up some on the tree, maybe some fur in the mouth.

My dogs and I do not spend time lying around in the yard or anything....If their out of the kennel, its time to learn or go to work.

Maybe send your dog to your friends for a couple months...

This is just what I do...and believe me, I'm no pro-trainer.

My hounds don't stay in the house and they ride in the box not in the front seat of the truck( My wife wouldn't think to much of that) LOL. I see them everyday, let them out of their kennels on nice days, let them in the pool, and I talk to them a lot. I train my dogs to come when I call ( No matter what), and were I don't have to lead them. When someone else hunts Diesel, he hunts but sees what he can get away with. Since I've opened the store, I don't get to hunt in the hunts like I want and would love to see him finished, but he doesn't want to cooperate.

Sometimes, the best way to bring out a dog's VERY BEST traits (including hunting ability) is to love them up and be their "buddy".

Some dogs just do it better for someone they WANT to please. What I am saying is that your dog may be going above and beyond what he "wants" to do simply because he wants to please you the way you please him.

I would say your best advice for a dog like this is to leave it somewhere where the person hunting it will treat it the same ways you do. Otherwise, it's pretty much a lost cause.

Only differance is the wife would let the kids up front. Any time the ex tells the dogs to do something they look at me to see if they have to .( just like the kids did) LOL

All dogs arent the same, just like people, its a case by case basis...My 5 year old male, whom I raised from a puppy, spent 6 months in louisiana with a friend of mine...he was hunted over 45 nights over the entire 6 months, (while I was going through a divorce) and he didnt tree one coon the entire time, I was told 98% of the time he didnt even leave the vicinity of the pickup, while for me he sometimes hunts too hard and deep...some dogs dont adjust to other handlers...it wasnt a matter of him not minding, or not responding to 'commands', it was a matter of him flat not hunting...

Diesel is Northern Blue, I wonder if its in their blood to be a one man dog. I know where a brother to him is and he's the same way. The guy let somebody try him and he wouldn't hunt ether.

my male has a littermate brother thats the same way, and I own a granddaughter to my male that wont act or hunt right for other people...

I have had a couple "one man" dogs..

My male who is now 7 will now hunt for quite a few people. It took him 2 years before he would hunt for anyone but me.. And I mean they would unclip him and he would yawn and jump back in the dogbox.. He would come when called, load up etc for anyone.. Just wouldn't hunt for them..

I have a male off of the above male.. He is almost 4.. To this day there are 2 people he will hunt for and 3 people who can pull him off a tree... He is not mean in any of the situations.. He won't approach strangers either.. He will just wag his tail and keep a couple steps out of reach.. He is MY dog and has let me know that when I try to loan him out for pup training..

I have a young female who is going to be the same way I think.. Nobody but me is going to put their hands on her..

I have no problem with it, but I don't nite hunt.. I don't want my dogs picked up by strangers so the two younger dogs are great for what I want...

And I can catch my fair share of game with these dogs so there is no lack of "drive"...

My old male grew up in my pocket.. Went everywhere with me.. The younger male was in the house until he was about 5 months old then kicked outside.. The female has never been in the house.. I do let all the dogs out to screw around while I am feeding and cleaning kennels.. And I do give them all lots of attention and love because I think they perform better for me that way.. But these dogs were raised at a young age differently and end up close to the same... Guessing it is the line of dogs..

Anyway... I think there is a chance that left long enough with someone they will hunt for them..

Bill my dog peanut is just as much a pet as he is a coondog he rides in the front of the truck with me and he stays in the house with me and he never needs a led for anything and when i let my buddys hunt him he trys the samethings and i tell thim to work him over if he needs it he might try you the frist drop but not the next one

I don't have any answers but my female had 5 different handlers for her 5 NtCh wins and I couldn't use anything that was a one man kind of dog.

Yep I know they are out there and there are some things youcan try to do to get them to work for other people and most will. I am like you though. I want my dogs to be able to be handled by others. I don't marry my dogs. Some body likes them more than I or offers me more money than I can afford to turn down they get sold. They have to be raised to be able to be happy with other people.
I think Bluestyles dog just go hunting for him becouse they want to get away from him. They probubley liked the other guy and wanted to hang out. LOL

That is why I said MOST of the time. I know all dogs aren't the same. I have nothing against dogs being made a pet out of either. If you are going to keep the dog all it's life I think it is great. I think most hunters would think it would suck to have to come home, bath and dry a dog after comeing home frome hunting every night. It is just a lot easier to leave them out side. I allso like the adapted to the weather when they are going to be working dogs. The man ask what we thought might help get his dog working for other people. Not how we think they should be raised. Now is that a better response? LOL

I have one who is more of a one person dog, i'm sure he'd go hunting the same for anyone but he is picky on who hes letting catch him & even pickier one who he lets pick him off a tree. I didn't raise him myself, he'd have never have been kept in the house.
I have another who I raised in the house, I let her ride in the cab at times and I'm quite sure anyone could hunt her. Althou shes only been hunted few times I hadn't turned her loose.

I run Northern Blue and yes it's in their blood I think. I don't think you can get it out of one that has it. He might become someone else's dog over a long period of time and be HIS one man dog -- I don't know. Lots of independence bred into these dogs as well.

I make pets of mine as well. Have had two that lived in the house when they were not hunting. It's make no difference in their hunting ability or their willingness to go hunting in any weather. It does make a difference in their intellegence to raise them that way.

On another note, as far as training one to fully obey under all conditions and come no matter what...I have done that too. I have called mine across deep running water. Thought one of them was going to be taken away in the swift current but she made it. It does come in handy but I had a hunting friend tell me he felt some of the edge was taken off when you do that. He believed in the catch-em-at-the-tree mind set. I have to admit I think it does too. You can go too far with it with a hound I do believe. I'll have some disagreement with this I'm sure.

I don't keep my dogs in the house, but I do consider them pets. Actually, I consider most of them my best friends.
Ya know - they may be the best of all friends - you can talk to them, tell them anything on your mind and they never interupt or do they ever judge you. They just give you their love and respect, if thats what you have given them.

As for this taking away from a hound, I don't think so. And some hounds will always be the type that will hunt for anyone who cuts it from a leash. Other, like my Joe dog, will hunt, but not as well as when he hunts for me.
