Yotes killing coon?
I am just wondering if anyone has had trouble with yotes killing coon at the feeders. I put out my first ones (kinda) and I saw a lot of yote tracks at them in the snow. Just wondering if they catch coon there wood they kill the coon or not.

Ok thank you. I got to worrying about feeding out in the open with as many yotes as there is in the area. I will place them in trees. Might have to redesighn them for a tree. LOL

can someone please explain this feeder thing to me!!!!!!!!!!! i am from north central pa dead center to be exact, can pee on ny state! that is how close i am! i have treed well over 300 coon with my dogs, prolly closer to 400 since i have lost count, but killed over 200 easy! this area supports that many and then some! i hear about using these feeders all the time! what is the purpose? and what does it do? i have been accused of hunting over feeders to tree all the coon that my hounds have treed, well if large corn fields are feeders, then i am guilty! you should turn one of your dogs loose in one of these large cornfields! hope ya ain't got nothing planned in the next 5 hours, cuz it might take that long! might only take a minute! but feeders? now i am lost!

coondawg feeders coyotes
i live in nj we use to have a large coon population we dont any longer you can still tree coons but with lost habitat rabies distemper acorn crop damaged by gypsy moths and a very healthy coyote poulation its hard on coonsthe eastern part of new york state dosent have big numbers but the western part does.guys where coon are scarce some people hunt on baited feeders so they dont have to be out all night to find a track ask some guys in eastern ny and they will tell you the same.food for thougt the red wolf reintroduced in nc diet consist of 30 percent raccoon and i believe coyotes are doing the same.i had them follow me while coonhunting looking for araccoon dinner.they are always on the hunt and arent picky about what they eat. happy hunting thanks ed
Sorry, I just seen this post and had to reply!
How big are your raccoons from where you live? It's not that I don't believe you or that coyotes aren't eating these coon, but a raccoon is not an animal that just lays over and dies. I am from ND and our coon can be big. Sure the youngsters could be in trouble and I'm sure some fall prey to those predators. As I have seen young ones up in a tree from the previous night with no Mother around. I have reason to believe coyotes were the reason for the coon to be treed, because I was snaring that day and seen fresh tracks from that morning as the coyotes worked down the snowy frozen river. As I checked further down the river and following the tracks, we had 3 fresh coyote catches. I have a hard time believing that they would wait them out of a tree. I guess you never know what a coyote does with his time. LOL! He has plenty of it. LOL! I just know how vicious a raccoon can be and how they can damage a dog. My opinion is that a coyote may not jeopardize himself if it is not a for sure deal.
Later, DJK

yote
can kill coon easey they dont have no broplem killing a big dog so a coon would be easey but i dont think a yots would wait till a coon cam dowen the coon would just stay up a tree till they left.if a yot runs on a coon in a big corn fild or has the rite opertunede i think a yot would kill a coon and eat it,

not every one has the coon poplation that you do so i feed coon here especley like this year no acorns and we dont have the big corn cropes like you do to feed the coon,so we feed them dog food in 5 gallen buckets and dont kill the coon so they will rase more kittens and spread out to help the coon poplation grow and yes i have coon dogs and dont need feeders to tree coon but i like putting back in my sport just like aney sport you get wate you make of it and that sir is a fack,

Guys yotes hunt just like a hound but are better at it and don't bawl on trail so they will catch them on the ground. They allso will stock there prey. Ever seen one after a mouse. They will even work together with other yotes to circle there pray. So catching them isn't a problem.
I was just wondering if they were bad about killing them at feeder buckets.

The funny thing about coyotes catching coons, around here we skin our coons in the woods and come spring the coyotes never touch the carcass. They`ll eat any other carcass even a coyote but don`t touch the coons. I`ve never found any sign of a coon carcass near a coyote den either. Not saying that their not capable of killing one but I just never see the sign of it, now fishers thats another story.

Somehow I can't see yotes cleaning out the coon population. I seriously doubt they are much of a threat to coons.

Also, if you have a yote killing your hunting hound, I would probably consider upgrading hounds or at least putting some bottom in the dogs you have.
I have a couple small 35-40 lb. runnin walker females , I guarantee a coyote will have his hands full with one of them.
Re: yote

Oh yes...a pack will kill your hound no matter how big or bad you might think he is. They are PACK hunters and know how to kill as a group. It's dangerous for a SINGLE hound. I've been out there among em quite a bit.__________________

Yotes vs. Coon
I am from SW MN and we have a large coon population, and a steadilly rising coyote population. Normally coyotes are scavengers, and opportunists. Around here they just eat the dead pigs left out for the rendering truck to take. I could easily see them preying on kits or young adults but would try and find easier prey. Adults are usually between 25 and 40 pounds. IMO raccoons would put up to much of a fight, for a yote even at a feeder station.

They will not eat dead one,s carcass after i skin them along with every thing eles Foxs Minks and so I take the carcasses up the hollower and dump them in a pile they come they eat every thing but the coons nothing eles will eat them either they lay there till they rot up . the first thing they eat are the foxs .That just what i have learn from watching the dead pile .

i have seen yotes lay down at a tree that holds a coon and wait many hours for the coon to come down being coyotes hunt in packs i don't care how big a coon is they will kill itmany nights we have treed coon with the hounds as soon as the yotes hear a dog treed they start to the tree i have heard them raising a ruckus as soon as we recut the hounds . joseph mcdonald bring one of your big bad hounds here to hunt and i bet you will change your mind as to what a pack of yotes will do to a hound especialy if the yotes haven't been run by a pack of houinds, yotes are oppertunist and will and do rip up a lone hound if a male they will castrate him if they don't kill him. a 45 to 50 pound yote is a fierce animal .

Wayne ,not denying they cant cause a dog some problems in a pack. Maybe our midwest coyotes arent as tough as the n.y. models, I dont know, maybe Us midwest coyote hunters are packin a little different style dog?
I will tell facts, and facts are I have several, not just one or two, but several that will catch and stretch one by themselves, All alone, no company whatsoever. Sad thing is some boys close by me have bigger and better kill dogs than I do.

What we are sayin is... a pack of yotes will hunt down and kill a dog if it is all alone in the woods. No doubt your yote hound could run down and kill one by itself, but when the pack runs your dog down it's another story. You are living in a fantasy world if you think your hound...or anybody's... could fight off and kill a whole pack of yotes all by itself.
