Do your homework and go hunting with some guys that have them and you'll be just fine. There are many styles of black and tans to choose from these days , but always check them out.

One of the nicest dogs I've ever owned was a black dog. There's good and bad in all breeds. I don't think you can go wrong if you get the right one.

Get yourself a real dog and get a Walker. I hunt with some friends who have a 4 year old B&T and it stands at your feet until the Walker opens.

We have Walkers and Black n Tans. Up until about a year and half ago my husband didn't like black n tans, we had one bad one and he made his judgement from him and decided he was a true Walker man till the end. Then the guy we got the black and tan from said he would replace him so we ended up getting 2 pups out of different breeding, a male and a female. They both started young and we ended up selling the male at 13 months old and he was doing a good job. We still have the female and she will whip the pants off of the Walkers and they are pretty good hounds. So now my husband actually handles a black n tan for the guy we got her from, it's actually her sire, and we now always have a young pup ready to start at the kennel. He is at least half converted....LOL.

I've had about every breed except a Plott. I had Walkers for the most part of 30 years. I still own a 9 year old GrNt Walker dog, BUT, the only thing in my kennel right now are Black dogs. A friend called me two nights ago while I was coonhunting and my dog was treed at the time. My friend said, "I thought you were hunting Black dogs. That big mouth sounds like a walker treed."
The dog stretched on the tree was an 85 pound Black and Tan. I like the looks of a Black and Tan and the intelligence in the line of dogs that I have......and the ones I have can run with any breed out there. There are good and bad in all of them. Finding the line of dog that you like is the key.

I sure hope you don't judge ALL black & tans by your friend measuring stick, Rest assured ALL BLACK AND TANS DON'T stand at your feet. If you think they do then bring your BEST to GA and I will hunt my sorriesr one and it want stand around at your feet. May curl up in the truck and take a nap while that walker tries to figure out which was the track goes, but want stand around. WHAT you THINK
THey call me H L Meyer. See you down the road

That's right ....

My male b&t is gone straight from the truck and the other dogs are still standing around sniffing each other and peeing and pooping and he is down and struck and they are still at the truck.....

NEVER, ever been under our feet and I have a 11 Week old puppy off of him now and you got to get him before he gets out of the yard. Nose to the ground and gone already!!

I will agree with that. I hunted with a b&t down close to the lake once. Right out of the box, he traveled a straight line until he hit a track. After dragging the tracker out and waiting forever, he was four and half miles down the road and across the lake! But he did have a house cat treed when we got there. Honest to god true story, and I swore I would never hunt with a b&t again. You can keep those black long legged devils.

Jon - Take off your blinders and get into the real world of coonhunting. I've had walkers do the same thing. You can't base views on a certain breed by watching one dog go. I turn mine loose from the truck and go get them and I also walk hunt big hollers out. One of the biggest names in the Treeing Walker breed lives 20 minutes away from me. I can't tell you the amount of times I have heard him talk about getting dogs(mostly young) a mile or better from the other side of the block....cutting them off before they headed into the next block. Another buddy of mine has an English dog that will punch a hole in the dark and you might get him two country blocks over...

Randy Tallon:

I'm not judging just by one dog, and concluding that they all must be bad dogs. That's just one experience with one b&t, I have plenty more. I don't like hounds at all anymore, so i'm not just picking on b&t's. It just so happen that the op wanted an opinion on "b&t". And that is exactly what I give em, my opinion on b&ts. Mtn. Curs are my preference now for many reasons.

Why is it some people have this attitude? I think you need to go hunting with some other breeds. There are good and bad in all breeds. If people were more selective to what they breed, there would be alot more good dogs out there and less trash. Alot of people don't want to spend the money to breed to a good dog, so they go the cheap route and breed to junk.

Posted by roughcreek on 01-22-2010 07:11 PM:

i like to hunt with a good dog of any color. but a black dogs is what i'v hunted for over 25 years. had some good ones & some bad ones. just like any other breed.
most have a super personality & are people dogs. you can make um a pet & they still excell in the woods. to me aint nothin like a black dog stretched up on the wood.

Posted by Brian France on 01-22-2010 07:57 PM:

My granddad, my dad, and now myself have always owned walkers but my dad owned an occasional different color, he used to make me laugh because he always said that the walkers were superior to all and then turn around and brag about the ol' "pudge" dog he used to own. "Pudge" was a black and tan! Anyway, breeds are like trucks, some like Ford and others like Chevy. Whatever suits you is the breed to own and there are lemons in all of them.
