Dogs Starting Young
Just curious why guys get so excited when a dog is hunting and treeing at 5 to 11 months old?
Most of those dogs get burnt out and by the time there 2 woln't even hunt. I just can't help but see all there threads and replys of dogs doing it since they were 5 to 11 months old.
Take a dog that is not a year old yet and enter a hunt and bad luck strikes and it gets eat up what do you have left?
I have seen more dogs ruined at a young age because guys pushed them to hard and expected to much out of them.
I don't see anything wrong with starting a dog young if it will do it. Personally I wouldn't put them in a hunt below a year old but they need to be in the woods before that.

I think the starting young is fine. I think were people go wrong is in the pushing to hard. Learning is one thing (fun) but turning it into work is another thing.
Now puting them in a hunt were they don't know what they are entering the woods with to young is just crazy in my opinion. To young depends on the dog and you better be a good judge of that when the time comes.

It's senseless handling and unrealistic expectations that causes burn out. The age of the dog is not what causes burnout.

I agree 100%

The whole reason I started this thread is because most people get a 7 month old treeing and looking decent then they think they gota hunt it every night or put it in the hunts. Just in most cases it isn't good in teh long run.
I work about 50 hours a week, have other hobbies and interests. If me hunting a dog burns it out then I need a new dog. I guess there are folks on there that can hunt all night every night and that is goody for you, but I think a lot of times there is very little danger of hunting a young dog alone too much.
As with most things in hunting and handling dogs, sometimes you just have to use common sense, but that seems to be lacking a good bit of the time.

I agree with Briar. If I can hunt one hard enough to burn it out, I didn't have nothing to start with. They don't get burned out, some do get ruined.

I look at it this way, why feed a pup for a year or two before you know what you have? I like a pup born in Dec. or Jan so i can start taking them for walks as soon as the weather breaks in the spring and the young dumb Kits are out. Most of the time by the time they are 6 or 7 months i know if they have talent and i want to keep feeding them. I always laugh when i hear someone talking about their 2 year old pup.
treberta ive started LOTS of dogs and had them treeing their own coon really young and never ruined any. people just hunt them way too hard once they get them started. ive got a 8 mth old BLACK N TAN thats been treening his own since 5 mths old. i thought you was only like 12 yrs old or something so how have you seen soo many dogs ruined?????

I have a year and a half old B&T that never got off a chain till I got him at 11 months old. He is running and treeing a coon about any time you turn him loose. Even in this cold weather and long running bore.
I have a 6 month old blue pup that has been running and treeing his own coon for well over a month now. They both handle well in and out of the woods. Havent put staunch obeidence commands in them but they know when told to heel they better quit pulling and get to the side. I will do more on that this spring.
I have a 8 weak old walker pup that is house broke to the point of comming and wakeing me up in my chair just a while ago to let me know she needed out. She will speak on command, open her wire crate door with her foot then walk around to the side and sling it the rest of the way open with her nose. Finds her food at eating time. I put it in a differant place and try to keep it about 3 ft. high. Then turn her out to find it. We have 2 fans running all the time. I can let her out the front door. There is a highway and the main street of town in front of my house about 40 ft. from my front door. She goes out by herself, goes to the side of the house, does her buisness and comes back and barks to get in.
Does the same to get out but sometimes comes to me instead of the door. Can't wait for better weather to do some field work with her.

As far as burning them out or ruining them by hunting them to young, i think many more pups are ruined by letting them set in the pen and get stupid until they are 10 months or a year old and they never learn to use their brain. To make my point just watch some coyote or fox pups in the wild. Momma teaches them to hunt at a very young age and they learn quick or die and never get to reproduce. Learning and figuring out new things becomes a habbit when you start them young.

my thoughts exactly !!
you can over due the little guys (4 to 6 months) & some just mature later. if you got much sence at all you know what each pup can handle & what age they are mentaly & physically ready to get serious about hunting. for me the younger the better.
JUST GET THE LITTLE GUYS OUT ONCE A WEEK ON A SHORT HUNT IN GOOD WHEATHER & LET UM HAVE FUN & SEE HOW MAY LESS CULLS YOU'L HAVE !! (4 & 5 MONTH OLDS) & LEAVE THE DAGONE CAGE COONS ALONE !!
