What is your favorite things about coon hunting?

No pet peeves here, just things that make your day or quietly puts a smile on your face.

I'll start with just a few of mine:

#1 Watching a top dog walk away from rest of the cast.
#2 Fellowship ... hmmm ... maybe this one ties with #1.
#3 Witnessing a close competitive cast of top sportsmen handling top dogs.
#4 Watching my sons get excited while hunting.
#5 One on one time with a hound in a frozen river bottom in the late winter watching the northern lights.
#6 Faithfullness of a trusted ole hound that has earned my respect.

And a little ways down the line pictures of Hobo with a redbone.

My favorite thing is watching a dog I raised progress. I love pushing a dog and knowing that my effort is making them better. I like having a breeder give me a pup and being able to call them and tell them how the dog is doing and allowing them to know what they are producing.

To me there is nothing like hearing a dog you are hunting load up on a tree and say to yourself " I am willing to bet he has that one". I like watching a dog work for me and be happy to do so.

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

there is more than one thing i like about coon hunting you dont have to be quit and you dont have to cover your scent up , most of the time its just you and the dog in the woods and you can pee on every tree and not spook the coons off lol

#1.Love watching a pups progress. The night your pup has a split tree and holds.

#1.B.Hunting with friends.

#2.As much as i love a pups progress i also like it when a old dog can still put it on the younger faster dogs.

#3.The worst thing about hunting hounds is watching a dog you raised getting to old to hunt.Still dont like that part.

all these things so far. Delta night life, that hits this hunting on the head.

The quite time in the woods. I cant stand when the cell phone rings....unless the dogs are treein so hard I cant hear the person, and I yell back "I'll call ya back".

When its just me n my dog/s.

I've found the Lord is out there with me many, many nights.

I love the Peace, and the Chase of good hounds pushin a track.

Definatly the friends I have made in my short coon hunting career. Have already had a lot of good times with them all, and looking forward to a few more.

There is only one I can add to that Mr Atherton....

#6 Watching a young dog progress from a bumbling puppy to an all season cooner.

hanging out with some really cool friends, talking about church and listen to Hobo tell stories.

Its great hearing the dogs open on track and tree.

#1 Spending time in Gods country...alone.
#2 There is no better than the silence of night broken by the sound of treeing coonhound.
#3 The often overlooked excercise benefit of chasing a hound up and down hills and through creek bottoms to find that next ringtail.

It dont matter who your with as long as the dog is in the woods and doing what its suppose to. I do verymuch enjoy taking my 4 year old girl hunting with me. That is probably when I have the most fun, listening to her ask question after question about whats going on, its great!

I'd still say I'm relatively new to coon hunting, but there are so many things I enjoy about it. I've always enjoyed hearing dogs run. I love hearing our deer dogs pack up and run a good race, but nothing beats hearing a good old bawl mouth dog break the silence in the woods at night. Even though he's gone now, I can still hear the first "real" coon dog we ever owned working a track in my mind. I remember the first night I ever coon hunted I got goose bumps the first time the old man opened up, and I figure as long as I keep getting that feeling I'll stay hooked.

Besides the dog work and getting to see my young hounds make progress, like most have already said I enjoy the fellowship. I've met some great hunting buddies and always have a good time taking dogs out and shooting the bull with them. And of course every now and then it makes for some good quality time for my fiance' and I when I actually let him go!

Most of you have listed things that I enjoy about hunting, but I believe my favorite part is how the stress and worries of everyday life seem to melt away in the timber.

Iagree with you completely. The hardest is when they start getting old. my old dog is 10 yrs old and thats not really old, but hes night blind and if i hunt him with ther younger, faster dogs he tends to run into stuff. I have wore out 4or5 pairs of waders behind this old dog in his life time and have a many a memory of our nights out.

about coonhunting

there are several things i can say i like about coonhunting an the first one is talking with the good lord an for some reason i believe he hears most of it. the other parts are not as important but it still matters to me an there not in the right order but who cares. i love to hear a good dog on a frosty night an hear his echo go down the creek or valley t just makes sittin on that log well worth it, then there is the first time you hear a pup open on track an you wonder if he or she is booger barkin or really goin with the ole dog an learnin then comes the time they both open at the same time an you know maybe the pup will make a dog an a smile comes across your face an a warm feeling go's threw your body cuase you have givin that pup a chance to be what he was bred to do. the last thing i really hate to do is cull a dog cuase they wont make a good coondog that really is the worse part about owning dogs. i have made alot of really good friends an i would love to hunt with more people before my days on this earth are done but if i dont it wont matter to them or me but i know i have had a wonderfull time listening to my dogs an visiting with good friends sittin on the tailgate an you know the dogs are treed but ya just keep talking about the next pup that you have coming along.

i go and have been going the last 30 yrs. just to see what the dog or dogs are going to do that particular night. simple as that. not a tremendous amount of expectations, lots of observations. sometimes more head scratching then other nights.

Watching good ole dogs doing it right, and family and friends.
I think the best of all is going to hunts and hearing the stories from the old school hunters.
