Most Popular Treeing Walker
Why's the Treeing Walker the most popular coonhound?
What are some distinct differences between the different coonhound breeds?
I would say the walkers are the most common due to them being the fastest, youngest starters and their speed. Before anyone gets their britches in a wad thier is always exceptions to the rule but this is true on an overall scale.
I would agree that that is some people's belief. Overall, statistically there are just more walkers, plus PKC is a lot bigger in the Walker breed.

my 2 cents
alot of smart breeding, money, n time
out numbered
there is like 6 walkers 2 any one other breed show up 2 a hunt 20 dogs entered 15 walkers 2-3 english one plot or bnt if there is so many in all other breeds promote them let the world know there is good in all breeds people only believe what they see
Our area, it's Redbones. I think the Walkers are popular because of the monkey see, monkey do. Plus their numbers are high, so naturally, they are going to dominate. We started out in Walkers, then got into Blueticks and from there, we have only English, although we did have us a nice Plott for a while, and a good number of Redbones. It's all a matter of personal choice, there are good and bad in ALL breeds, but if you conquer by numbers, the Walkers would win.

i was wondering, if walkers have a hotter nose, could they also be used to hunt squirrels? i know some have colder noses but i think i heard that they tend to have hotter noses. am i right or not. i've thought maybe they would make good combo dogs, leaning towards coons.

I think its more of the people behind the dogs. If the walker guys would of done the same thing with plotts we would be talking about plotts dominating and the walkers would have been left in the dust. The walker hunters are just not a step or two ahead of the other breeds they are a country mile. Me personally i cant stand a walker dog but you have to give credit where credit is due!
Plottpower......Why cant you stand walker dogs?
There's no doubt that Walkers are the breed of choice for competition hunters and that being the case a lot of breeding and training goes on with the goal being to win nite hunts. That in itself produces some excellent dogs but the man whos more of a laid back pleasure hunter can sometimes get more dog than he really wants. Also some of todays go yonder type dogs we spent a lot of time looking for until the age of tracking systems came in and we still find them dead in the road to often.
AJPDP, ive yet to see a walker that suits me, ive got a line of plotts that just really suits my style of hunting, the line of dogs we hunt and the hunters i hunt with hunt coons, bears, and coyotes, so plotts are just what works for us they seem to have the brains to be able to handle what we throw at em. Out of all the walkers ive seen, ive only seen 1 that i can remember that i really liked, one out of a thousand arent good enough odds for me, im not much on a go yonder dog i like em hunting a woods out, if they have to go a mile to tree a coon then so be it, but i dont like a dog going a mile then hunting, here in indiana there is no reason to go a mile to tree a coon.
There's a reason people don't feel confident putting up 250 bucks an entree fee unless youre entering a walker dog.
There's a reason there are so many of them. People want what wins and it's much easier to fina a winning walker opposed to a winning blue, black, red dog.
The day guys stop whinning about the only reason walkers win is because there's so many of them and work to improve their breed is the day I will jump for joy.
in the last 31 years of the ukc world hunt another breed has only won 5 times. a plott won once english dogs won 3 times and a black and tan won once. I would say that may be one reason they are popular. people can bash and badmouth walkers all they want but one breed winning it 26 times versus all other breeds only winning it 5 is a big difference.
around here , english , blues and blackntans are just as thick as walker dogs and walker dogs are the ones you see winning the hunts
walkers are just more action packed, they are quick to do business.
ITS NOT THAT THERE ARE MORE WALKERS ,,, THERE ARE JUST FEWER OF THE OTHER BREEDS THAT ARE WORTHY OR CAPABLE OF WINNING A HUNT,, so you just never hear about any of them.lol

What happened to that coons tail?
Looks like all its hair fell out.
the reason the walker breed wins more hunts is because that is what they were bred to do...they dont mess with cold feeder tracks and take the time to work up a nasty one. they were bred to run warm to hot tracks and do it FAST...they were bred to get treed and stay treed no matter what and that is what they do. sometimes they got a coon sometimes they dont. but the reason the walkers are winning is beacuse they were bred to compete not tree a raccoon no matter what the track is.. a hot nosed go yonder dog can tree 2 coon in the time a cold nosed dog grubs up a feeder track...points are points and that is the direction the walker breeders have taken them....as for me, i'll keep treeing coon with my english dogs. i've been in 7 hunts with my male dog and won my cast on 5 of them. his 1st place win was at a walker sectional..

Higher percentage of the walkers turn out compared to the other breeds.
Around here its mainly walkers but IMO our blueticks hold their own pretty good to the walkers in the nite hunts.

I've had some pretty good Walkers that did more than their fair share of winning, but if comp hunts were illegal and we could only pleasure hunt, I would have culled every one of them.
I've got a great little Walker bitch that is absolutely a pleasure to hunt. I ended up with her because she couldn't cut it in the hunts. She's colder nosed, she'll back another dog, she checks in, she finishes the tracks she STARTS and she is 90% accurate.
Just what I was thinking
Treberta is right I have never understood people saying you can win with a dog 50% accurate. If I have a dog that can beat you and he is only 50% accurate that doesn't say much about your dog. The dog that wins is the fast dog that has the meat.
what i don't understand is i know of a couple people that started with an "off breed" and after one didn't turn out switch to walkers
then go threw 3 or4 until they get what there looking for and say after that first "off breed" how it put a bad taste in there mouth for that breed. but will give walker more chance. I'm not saying it will take 3 or 4 walkers to find a good one but seems so many people give them more of a chance than any other breed then turn around and say how you can't go wrong with a walker.

walker dogs
i agree thats why walkers win a lot of hunts because they are bred to go as far as they need i have had every breed of coonhound at one time or another i just have had better luck with redbones what i dont like about walkers is they tend to go blowing through the country side not all of them but the ones i have hunted with in the last couple years then you spend half the night try to locate them i like to hunt not spend my night looking for dogs and seen alot of slick trees dont want to offend the walker guys this is just my experince with every walker i have hunted with or owened
