I don't know what causes it but i know it can kill a dog quick. They drink and drink and drink and then swell up. It's called "bloat". It will kill a dog in hours.

Diabetic dogs drink alot of water too. May want to have his sugar tested.

Posted by Doug Adams on 09-18-2009 05:20 AM:

Yes, the vet put him on some kind of meds for a while. The vet said it might become more of a problem when he got older. He was fine while I had him, but he always seemed to drink alot of water. Good luck with your dog

I appreciate the help. He has just turned two. I have been out of town all week and my wife told me he hasn't been acting like he normally does. She said he has been eating, but more slowly than usual. Seems a little more sluggish than normal. I came home today, called the vet, and am set up to take him in tomorrow.

Craig,I wonder if maybe the dog is diabetic. I've seen that before and the dogs have eventually went blind also. I hope its something simple for your dog though. Let us know how it turns out and good luck. Dave

Fleas can cause anemia which will cause the symptoms you are describing too.

had a 5 year old female that gradually started drinking more and more water and did not seem to want to hunt as long as she used to. she finally started losing weight and would not eat. turns out she had kidney failure. vet said it could have possibly been some bad dog feed or poison of some type considering she was only 5 years old. don't delay getting your hound to the vet. mine did not make it.

Just got back from the vet. Not good. Kidney failure. Kidney rate should be around 25, His is 125.

When he was a pup, and I bought some worm med. from a vendor at Orangeburg. It had something in it to kill tapes. I questioned him about the wormer, and he told me it would be fine. I gave just a taste to the pups, and they all died but him. We doctored him through it. The Dr. told me that his kindeys were damaged, and it is taking this long to show up. (2 yrs.)

The vet told me that giving tape wormer to a pup was just as toxic to a little pup as anti-freeze.

Beware of the venders that are trying to make a sale, and really don't know what they are talking about. I wish I had it to do over, but I don't. I also wish I could remember the vendor that told me it would be fine. I would post his name in a hic-up. I thought he would know what he was talking about. WRONG!!!!!
I can't believe that I am having to hold back the tears. I am too old to cry.......but I could, and probably will before it's over.

Thanks for your concern.

Thoughts and PRAYERS

Craig... so VERY sorry to read this. I started to post earlier but with the UKC slow issue I ended up deciding to hold off. I had started to post about my old greyhound with kidney failure...and I felt it was too negative. I prefer to be Uplifting and ... I decided to be quiet.... I have thought about you all day and said some prayers you wouldn't have to deal with this.
I'm so sorry it is turning out this way, with your dog having kidney failure...
You are NEVER EVER too old to cry... and to most of us these are not "just dogs"... not Human and no where near as BIG a deal when a dog is sick... as a human but Humans love their pets and hunting companions....

Bob and I will continue to Pray for your peace of mind during this tough time....
Heather

You know thats why Im very cautious about giving my hounds anything a vet won't prescribe. Yeah they may be higher but I would rather pay more and have a safe hound!

I know theres allot that gives straight ivermec. And I hope it works for everyone. I just know its probably easy to overdose and like your vet said, may show up 2 yrs later. thats what worries me!

Some of these meds. are very toxic if not used exactly for there correct purpose.

Craig, hope all is well.
