pups legs bowing (help)
My 8 week old Blue pups front legs are starting to bow out and she is starting to knuckle over. Has anyone had any luck with the Eagle Brand feed correcting this problem? That stuff is pretty expensive to say the least but I am willing the go the mile if it corrects the problem.

Thanks
Thanks for the Help. I did have her in my covered kennels but I have since moved her to an outside pen.
What was the outcome on the Red pup after giving the vitamins. Did the pup show any signs of the problem when it matured?

Ditto
I'v had countless american bulldog pups like this it is called ricets and the more sunlight the better they uselly straitin up in a week or two and have no more problems.
Thanks Brian
Brian did your bulldog pups straghten up on there own with the help of plenty of sunlight, or did you have to assist them with some type of medication/vitamins/diet change?

ive had this same problem with a pup i got, his legs were bowing bad and i carried him to the vet, he said there wasn't any problem, it was just a calcium difficency and they will grow out of it. i asked the vet bout calcium peels, he said they used to give them to them, but it doesn't really help they will just grow out of it.

Great Responce to a call for help
Thanks to all so far that have responded to my call for help. It looks like I'm off to Wally World in the morning for Cod Liver Fish Pills after a trip for wormer and another pup shot.
I am all ears to any more help. Sounds like feed is also a factor.

It's a vitamin D deficiency - dogs manufacture vitamin D in the body from sunshine, and dogs that are inside or mostly in shade during heavy growth periods will knuckle over, go down in pastern, or will get bowed legs.
Cod liver oil is high in Vit D, that's why it helps. However, use the cod liver oil cautiously, more is not better - vit D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so if you give them more than they need, the extra gets stored in the fat and the liver.
Give one pill (or half a teaspoon of the liquid) once a day for a week, then once every other day for a week or two, and that's all they need.
Get them out in the sunshine as much as you can - that's the best solution!
Laurie
Fast growing pups might show worse signs Than slow growing ones. If the pup is 10 lbs, I wouldn't hesitate to go with a tablespoon per 10 lbs. Cod liver oil, that is!

seen more cases of this with pups on the "so called" good puppy foods.Best bet is to put pups(after 8 weeks) on the same good quaility dog food you feed your adult dogs. And not hi pro and hi fat. More times than not the bowed legs -ricketts is caused by the pup growing weight wise faster than the bones and tendons can keep up.And be careful of adding to much cal.In some cases it can add to the problem.Cod liver oil and plenty of sunlight,a good standard protien/fat diet and no OVER feeding will straighten the problem out in a couple weeks.

I had this problem once, vet had me give the pup 1/2 of a large Tums with calcium. I don't know if it was the Tums or just time but she did get better over about two momths. The breeder said the mother dried up really early so the pups eating formula alot and probably were not getting sufficient calcium.
