what would YOU rather have a club do???

.............you have 20 folks that want to guide.........enough dogs for 10 casts........would you rather the club draw guides from a hat................or let the 10 folks with spots closest to the club guide?????????.........let's say some guides are driving 10 minutes, others an hour...........

..........

.....I personally think the FAIR thing to do is draw the guides, regardless of driving distance..........

first thing I'd do is let my MEMBERS guide, then go from there. Those folks tha join a club work it and bust a hump to put on events for others to take part in deserve fist spots for guiding. If they are all members of the club seems to me they should have had 16-18 hunters not 10 ???

I prefer the guides with the best hunting. If you have 10 casts I want to be in Coon Country, and not a dry hole. I would rather drive a hour and tree coons all night as I had drive 10 min and not tree a single coon.

Members WITH COONS get first option at guiding. If you have 10 members that want to guide and all of them have coons, then thats a problem I would LOVE to have! Around these parts coon are pretty scarce!

The club has the right to decide what people should guide and which dont.

Posted by dkrause on 06-16-2009 06:42 PM:

i dont care if they are club members or not or if they guide 10 min away or an hr i want to be put in coons and i think those guides with the best hunting should be given priority.

1) Hunting Guides who are club members should be given priority.
2) All other guides will be determined by distance & quality of hunting. If there are non-hunting club members available to guide, use them before sending a cast an hour away. If a non-member is hunting and can provide some good hunting within reasonable distance, than by all means use them.

I can be irritating as a handler to attend a local club and then get drawn out with a hunting guide an hour away and end up hunting some poor hunting or rough terrain just because the club that they'd do someone a favor.
As a HD or club official, nothing irritates me more than when the club has club members available to guide and some shmuck who hardly shows they're face and isn't even hunting rolls into the clubhouse as some other outsider's personal guide and requests to take a cast an hour away. If we need them, fine... but if we don't tough.

You've got a high class problem!

We normally have to recruit guides--not many volunteer. My club is 1 1/2 hours from home, and I never guide because its too long a drive. We have half a dozen local guys who guide regularly--some pay club dues, some not, but we need them all when we get a decent turnout. Most of us have hunted at most of their spots, and we discuss who is going to use which spots in which order so we don't end up with two casts in the same place at the same time.
Sure wish we had more guides volunteering than we needed!

I know one thing, I get mad as hell when I have to take a cast back to my place 50 miles away while club members are there watching the draw before they go out pleasure hunting,

Posted by Dan Dogs on 06-16-2009 09:37 PM:

we had a hunt fri. and sat. and the farthest cast went 45 min. but brought back 725+ on fri. and 975+ on sat. i can't squak on that..i can guide 1 mile from the club house but wouldn't come close to bringing in a score like that!!

Scoring on lots of coon will always ease the pain.

If a club has to send a cast over an hour for a regular UKC event they are doing something terribly wrong.

I prefer for someone to decide on and appoint me the most qualified judge first...and then do the same thing for my guide.

Often do you suppose that actually happens? LOL!

BTW, per your thread a while back you said you would be addressing this issue. I was at a hunt a couple weeks ago and saw the MOH fumble through drawing casts 2 nights in a row. Did not follow procedure, any suggestions?

I'd consider a regular UKC hunt 25 dogs or less. Personally, anything less than 8 casts should be able to be guided within an hour around here. If your club can't draw 8 guides within an hour something ain't right. Obviously, some parts of the country this isn't possible due to terrain and lack of hunting ground. I know of that many guides in just my town, do they all show up to guide? No, but they're there and I bet with a certain amount of begging I could get them to show up. A little prepartion and extra effort goes along way.

Posted by Dan Dogs on 06-16-2009 09:58 PM:

we have drawn 25 dogs at our buddy hunts, and yes, we can get them to the woods within 20 min. but when we draw 40-60 then we have to stretch out a little farther..

First of all the club has to pick someone who won't leave the cast! then worry about distance & coon!!

I'd rather hunt a little farther from the club and be in coons than close in no coons or with a guide who never coonhunted ever before in his life.
