Real tough to pick a winner this year. Good year to hit a nice payout if you can hit the exacta or a huge one for the tri. I am pretty sure the favorite will be 3-1 at the worst.

To me this is the best group of three year olds in a long time.

Wow, the only time Poe comes back to the board is to beat me up in horse racing. lol That's o.k. Good to hear from the master of the $2 window.

I'm with ya at this point Larry. I like Friesen Fire. Mostly because I really like his trainer Larry Jones. I am a little worried about that long lay off. I guess I'll wait to see what post he draws before I committ.

I liked Quality Road also but now he has quarter crack issues.

Pioneer of the Nile was impressive but that's on poly tracks.

I don't know Mike...for some reason I don't think this is a very good crop of three year olds. I do agree the race will be wide open as far as the betting goes. There won't be a hands down favorite this year.

Let's do our UKC Derby Contest based on any $20 bet you could make at the track. Bet it any way you want. We'll determine a winner off this website by using actual track payout. I'll make a new post and sticky it AFTER the post position draw next week. You can then place your bets on that thread. I'll come up with a UKC prize package for the winner. Sound good?

It really is hard to tell if this is a good crop of three year olds because most of the top contenders did not race against each other in their late preps.

Then, you have the horses bred for turf that are running on the fake dirt. And the Cali horses that have to run on the poly or travel like I want Revenge.

My biggest disappointment in the preps was the Pamplemousse getting injured. I wanted to see Pioneer of the Nile have a target to race down.

One thing that makes me feel this is a good crop is because there are several top runners that can get the distance and have already worked through traffic. Most years there are more horses that will never again compete over a mile.

Todd, if you make a sticky, I will make my bet. I have done well this year with Dubai and the preps. Sadly, I seem to blow it every year at the Derby. War Emblem was the last time I hit a big one on Derby day.

Stardom Bound, cant go wrong with a fillie. They won it last year with big brown, they are not gonna come back the
next year with junk. Thats my pick!

Stardom Bound is on the shelf resting. After a mediocre performance at Keeneland, she was not training forward, so they are giving her a break. No injury listed at this time.

Well im out then, I dont think any other fillies were even in the running. I swear I checked the other day and she was still up there.

Right or wrong, the biggest thing in betting the Derby for me is post position and running style. If my favorite horse ends up on the far inside or outside, I'm looking for something else. I know Big Brown won it from 20 but that was a fluke I think. Hopefully I can find something I really like in the 6 through 12 holes.

What do you all think about that 20 horse field? Do you like that? I personally hate it. I think it's begging for an accident and even without and accident, the best horse may not even get a chance to show itself. Why can't they just run the top 12 in earnings and let them have a chance for a clean race? Are they running 20 simply for tradition's sake or the money or what? That's the only thing I don't like about the Derby.

......................20 horses puts more of the race in the JOCKEY'S hands...............he better know the horse, and know where he needs to be to make his move at the appropriate time, and not get boxed in or forced 4 wide..................jmo..smiles

Agree with you 100%! I think it's so dangerous... dealt with some horses in rehab hurt out of the gate in big fields. I worry about the jocks...

I have no pick for now. Watched some prep races and really enjoyed it and had picks...BUT...my mum who is almost 90 was needing me to go into Boston to take her to Drs.... and somehwere in my exhaustion I cannot even recall the name of one horse in the field! LOL... Brain injury does that... (THIS is my biggest worry with those jockeys too... losing the brain power in a fall....) We WILL be watching the race for sure and I'll do some last minute picking and will watch what all you folks who are keeping up with it are doing!

Have fun with your pix! HappyHunting Heather

Im with you on the size of the field Todd. I hate it when there that tight. Seems like the good horses always get a bad start in that kinda crowd. It just leaves too much up to luck and post position.

Like you, that has me holding off untill I can see the post positions.

Id like to see them have a couple earlier races, splitting the top 20 money earners up in 2 races. Then have the Triple crown run with the top 5 from each of those earlier races.

A 10 horse field leaves alot more room for the true tallent to show through.

I realy like the blood in my early picks though.

They need to set a minimum stakes earning instead of the top 20. There are so many horses qualifying with 1 race as a 3 yr old and limited runs with a 2 yr old.

what qualifies a horse to run in the derby?

they must be in the top 20 in graded stakes earnings as a 3 yr old.

Posted by NCBLUE on 04-29-2009 01:11 PM:

well, with starters dropping like flies it could be a decent sized field. Out: General Quarters, Square Eddie, and now Win Willy. Except for the last some real contendors falling out
