E Collars have you ever tried one on?
i know that there are different methods on training a hound , but personally i have never used a shocking collar and i don't intend on ever using one. now before everyone thinks i am a enviromentalist that is out to get people who abuse hounds your wrong in fact im not afraid to get after one with a switch , for those who use a collar, why and have you ever tried one on ,

tuff
i got two daughters who will hold it till it shuts down on level six......i aint that stupid.....think they took after their maw
I dont use them either.
There was a guy I used to hunt with that would absolutely fry his dogs on a tri tronics on the highest level. He would hold the button down until the thing shut itself off and then do it again. His dog would just squall and make all kinds of racket. I told him one night after I got tired of that crap and said why dont you buzz yourself with that piece of crap. He put it on his hand, hit the button and it looked like somebody swithced him with a 2x4. He jumped and hollered like a little baby. It gave him a little more respect for it, he really didnt know how bad he was hurting his dog.

You'd better believe it!
I have used them with every dog I have ever trained. It is a tool. I use it as a tool. I beep far more than I shock.
I've never been hit by one..... but they're an effective tool that works great when used properly and that's why people use them. I've never ate dog food either but have no problem giving it to my dogs.
I have however had 50,000 volts pumped through me via a police tazer and can tell you that ain't no fun!
dk
i guess what im trying to say is , using one is not necassary , i have hunted plenty of hounds and not once have i ever thought of using one.

Of course they are not nessessary. Hounds have been trained for hundreds of years without them.

I do more beating the side of my chap than i do the dog , pain isn't as intimidating as a noise and you only need to get there attention. most hounds know when they are wrong , they just need reminded they have a job to do,

Everyone trains differen't and everyone uses their training tools differen't as everyone knows, but I can get results right now with the tri-tronics, I have used it on my catahoula the last two years and when he sees the collar coming he literally throws his head into it, he knows it is time to work. The first time a cow bellars at him good luck stopping him without a little nick of the collar, it just makes for alot more enjoyable day. He works like a machine with it and a lunatic without. They have their place when they are needed.

OK, I am a little confused. You admit there are different levels of using the switch, right?
Why can't there be different levels of using an e-collar? A low level that does not give you a response from a dog, or even the tone as Jim says is not much more than a tug on a lead.
It simply reminds the dog that you are there.
You are thinking only in terms of what you associate electricity with ... a nasty shock. E-collars do not have to mean a nasty shock.
Tools are simply tools. I don't juggle a chain saw and I don't hardly ever move my e-collar above level 2.

I think waaaaayyyyy too many good dogs have been ruined with shocking collars. They can effective is used 100% correctly, but NOBODY knows exactly what their dogs is doing everytime. I know that I would have ruined mine if i used one. Many times when he was younger i caught myself extremely regretful that i didn't have an e-collar on him.... just about the time he locked the tree up with a coon.

You won't ruin a dog shocking at the wrong time with an e-collar if you don't do it too much. I've fried several off of coon when I thought they were running or had caught something else. It might confuse them a little but they have always got over it pretty quick.
alot depends on the dog. some dogs can be scolded off stuff some you just talk rough to and they listen. some tend to be more hard headed you can scold and talk all you want. as alot of people said E collars are a tool and when used correctly they do their job. you mentioned someone getting carried away with a E collar i have seen some get carried away with switches. i have trained dogs with and without E collars.
