Pup Prices

With the economy in the shape it's in ... when can we expect pup prices to start dropping ?

You used to could go to one of the coonhound events and get some real bargains .... I can understasnd top price for pups from really nice gyps bred to a proven sire in the stud programs .

.. but , these so-so gyps bred to something local and maybe in just the P.P. ... and the sire and dam don't have older , started pups on the ground ... that's about a $50 pup right there ... dang sure not $200-$300 .

If a person can't afford $ 200-300 for a pup then they have no business buying a pup. That $200 dollars is the cheapest part of buying the pup.

Some people want to make money, some want to cover costs and some just want to get their pup in the hands of a proven winning trainer/handler.
Anyone who has proven their abilty to train winning coondogs won't be paying anything for their pups.

any pup is worth $200 - $300, no breeder is making money at that.

This is true!

Posted by Justin Smith on 03-25-2009 04:33 PM:

Pets are an almost guaranteed investment ... but with coonhounds , a first time cross and unproven studs ... you're not talking about paying $300 for a coondog ... you're talking about going through several of them before you get a good one .

By the same token that folks who can't afford pups should buy them .... if you can't afford to breed dogs without worrying about getting your "investment" back .. then you're also in the wrong market.

I haven't bought a hound pup in six years .... but , I do like to experiment now and then .... but when everyone thinks that just because their dogs are bred good they deserve $200-$300 per pup ... good luck .

How about a breeder saying .. for $500 , I'll keep supplying you with pups til' you are satisfied .... that would be more justified ... invest in the company , so to speak.

Posted by NCBLUE on 03-25-2009 04:36 PM:

go look at pups for say schutzhund or bird dog pups and you'll be glad to pay $200-$300 for a pup.

Posted by Justin Smith on 03-25-2009 04:42 PM:

I have payed $600-$800 for jag pups ... but they came from hard tested dogs and proven studs .

But .. if the sire doesn't have pups old enough to see hunt and it's the gyps first litter along with her not being a seasoned , road tested dog .... then those pups aren't worth nothing , it don't matter if you have alot tied up in them ...

It's like trying to sell a used truck that you overhauled ... just because it cost you a bundle just to get it up to par don't mean it's worth all that money when you sell it .

I sold my last pups for $350 and $450 and think I might have underpriced the $450 ones. My pup prices never go down. The female becomes more proven with each litter and if the pups aren't turning out, I'd stop breeding her, period.

In my experience those where price is a big issue are the least likely to do anything with them. The ones that know what they are doing will make it worth 4 figures by the time its a year old and the initial price is not such an issue.

I don't have a problem with giving pups to people that will put the effort in. My pups carry an incentive that if it makes NtCh before its 3 years old, I will refund the purchase price. So, a $3-500 pup is too high for those that know they won't get the job done and becomes a free pup for those that will.

I'd stop raising pups if I can't get more than $200 out of them.

I will NEVER take unsold pups to a dog event again. I have never seen so many tire kickers and bargain hunters and the event becomes a job, instead of something fun, for me.

yeah , the sellers don't wanna hear about no recession or pup prices dropping ....

... but , how many of yall would pay that much for pups out of a stud that has no started dogs on the ground yet and a gyp that doesn't have a few hard seasons under her belt ?

Loren , I'm too cheap to feed anything that isn't pretty salty ... and still just tough enough to wear out a couple pair of hunting boots each year ... anyone that follows that recipe should have a good hound .

My current project fell off the fence and into the good side this morning .... it's been six years since I've had a dog good enough to name and send the papers in on .

I prefer a local pup from parents I've hunted...Papers do not mean much to me...So, I will pay $200 for a pup out of awesome coonhounds regardless of whether they are just local coon dogs or titled out dogs.

weaning age pup is worth what ever you are willing to pay.Myself 200 is a fair price and wouldnt go much higher than that unless it was a semon pup off somthing that cant be bought everyday JMO

performance and superstakes drives pup prices higher plus walkers are higher anyway. personally i wouldn't buy one that is not eligible for the performance program s.s really doesn't matter to me just for resale value.

i bought my first pup at 8 months old for $150 20 years ago no p.p or s.s

Re: Pup Prices

With the cost of all the programs SS,BS, and performance how can you justify selling a pup for $50. Not to mention if you breed a personal female and have to raise the pups with shots and feed till 2 months old and then get the litter registered. You barely come out selling them at $200-$300 depending on how many pups are in the litter. If you have a stud dog IMO the only way you can make money is either breed a couple outside females per month with a stud fee. Or raise the litter start them and sell them for $500-$1,000 and hope you get that special one that will sell for $3,500-$5,000 at a year old. Most stud dog owners do not make alot of money with the dog they do it b/c they like what he throws, but I do want to get some of my money back out of the litter.

$200 to $300 tops. I've gotten the last 2 pups around here for $150 and the last one for $200. I can't get over the $700 and up pups i've seen on here.Too much for me, but someone will buy them i'm sure.

I agree with you on this.... Unless its a pup off of semen then I can understand the higher prices.
