Young Pups First Coon...

What's the earliest age you've shown a coon to your pups?

What did they do?

What's the breeding? (especially in blue dogs - others welcome too.)

These are two of mine. They have are out of a male of mine, out of the Dutch dog, and a female I owned out of Art.

I have started showing coon to pups at 6 to 8 weeks. With a litter of pups if one starts barking at the coon usually the rest will. If they don't pay any attention to the coon I wait a couple weeks and do it again. I never let a young dog get a hold of the coon. I have had good luck starting pups this early. On some I have waited till they were older over 9 months. It seems to take them longer to start. With the young pups I don't work them to hard, once every couple of weeks and not for very long. Then when they get a little older and start to hunt they really seem to take off fast.

Rascal...

Have you shown him one and how did he do? How was his mouth and enthusiasm? Just trying to figure out the dominant traits in the litter. Thanks.

I bought a Bluetick pup once when it was arouind 8 weeks old. We had been to a water race and I had the caged coon with me and while we were sitting around talking I put the coon on the ground. The pup walked over to the cage and smelled the coon and walked off. A lil bit later it walked back over to the cage and this time the coon growled at it. That pup jumped back and started barking at it. I have pictures of her somewhere around 10 weeks old treeing on a caged coon.....

She was Solid Rock bred.

We have an english pup (Timber Cutter x Taylors Cedar Creek Bee) that found one in the front yard in a cage. He walked around the house and through that nose up like a kid wanting that pie in the window, he walked past Mr. Coon stopped and turned back walked up in the door of cage Mr. Coon growled pup jumped back and barked and bucked like a bull. I was amazed and impressed just hope I dont mess him up.

Cant say I have trained a lot of dogs. It makes sense to me to let them grow up a little bit. I personally have not ever really messed with my pups until the were 7 or 8 months old. I have only raised 2 pups and I have 2 coondogs. Pretty good odds

if my pups will start with out a caged coon i don't ever show them a coon, i think its better for a dog to learn everything in the wild and never be subjected to the easy stuff, the stuff a lab or collie can tree

this is a 5 month old english pup off of psycho roy...
she found this coon in the back of the truck and treed on it before we ever even got it out to show it to her.....lol
i pulled it through the woods about 400 yrds and cut her loose and she found it right away and went nuts over it. it was her first coon she had ever seen....

The pups needs to be a good chunk bigger than the coon and old enough that they aren't intimidated by the coon like all these pics show .... you can either train a dog to make the coon fear him .. or let them pups learn to fear the coon.

Nothing wrong with hides that young ... but they don't need to see a grown , live coon til' their balls start to drop and they more courage.

Posted by DSKennels on 03-17-2009 05:22 PM:

Ironic...I don't see a pup intimidated by a coon anywhere in these pics or vids.

Posted by Justin Smith on 03-17-2009 05:27 PM:

I don't see any teeth on fur in any pics ... just pups standing back, feet in front ... boogering with their lips over their teeth .... not up on the cage barking and showing fang .. basic as it an be .

The red dog and english for sure have their tails down ... can't say about the others .

Let's a see a pic of pups that young with teeth on the cage and their tails up ... that's a pup that is ready .

Posted by delta nightlife on 03-17-2009 05:36 PM:

that pup of mine only seen one caged coon and one drag her first year of life and she just turned 14 months today, every thing else has been tought in the woods hunting her with her mama and daddy the first 8 trips (4 apeice) and then i took her to the woods by her self just me and her on 20000 acres and wouldnt you know it the first ever track she hit she treed it within 20 minutes and had the coon , just cant get no better than that.

I am not sure what intimidation is to you but out of these, I don't see intimidation. These pups probably couldn't get to the fur if they wanted too...their mouths aren't big enough. If I get mad at someone but I don't knock the hell out of them...does that mean I am intimidated by them?...NO!...As far as the tail thing goes...are you kidding me?...lol...

Posted by MikeO on 03-17-2009 07:05 PM:

when you knock a live coon out of the tree and the dog just bays and barks at it that dog is intimidated.

We're talking about pups...baby pups...lol...I don't go near Walkers anymore but I had one a while back that bit into a coon the first time she seen it. Believe it or not, my friends hit one on the road and brought it to the house for me to introduce it to the pup. Turned out the coon was only knocked out. When she bit into it, it woke back up and got defensive as you could imagine. She wouldn't let go of the coon. I had to kick it away from her...I had sandals on and the coon took one off my foot...lol

By the way, I wouldn't own a dog that just bayed at a coon after shooting it out of a tree.

Posted by Justin Smith on 03-17-2009 07:31 PM:

Those red pups are doing it right .. tails up and wagging ... trying to bite the cage ... and not just one or two but nearly all of them ... that's some good breeding right there.

I have done it too before 7 months but John Wick is right, you could do a lot more harm than good.

I have a buddy that killed a coon and had it at my house . We had a 8week old pup that tracked it to a wood pile and backed treed at it. The pup was Handyman.
