-- i got my "ghost" coon (its huge) (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=243082)
i got my "ghost" coon (its huge)
i have treed this coon in the same grape vine tangled oak tree at least 25 times. we could never find the coon due to the thickness of the vines. well tonight we decided to hit that woods and rebel went straight for the area where he always trees. he treed. as we walked in i just knew we wasnt gonna find him. we got to the tree and rebel was 1 tree over from the tangled mess!!!! with a HUGE silver backed beauty hanging on a limb. he weighed 32 lbs.
we treed 5 and shot 4 in 3 hours and im gonna go back out in a minute. i was just so excited to get the ghost coon i had to post it. heres a few pics. it was pouring rain so im kinda wet.

I almost posted on this thread earlier, but didnt wanna sound like an A$$.
My grandpa told me about when he killed his "ghost" coon and how he regretted it everytime he wanted to see if a dog had the heart to finish a track.
WOW!
That coon is taller than me! Nice job and he is a beautiful color.

That is a HUGE coon.
Congrats....I think....no offense but I would of taken a pic of it and then walked away. That coon was smart enough to get away all these times it deserved to keep on doin' just that. JMO....
But....
I must say you sure look proud! Hopefully, that ol' coon has left behind some smart coon-babies!
Nice hound, too!
Happy Hunting!!

Brad,
Thats a big boy, I had one that done us the same way--- and i
regretted taking her-- it was an ol sow coon. but, she looked to 5 or 6 year old. so old age may have gotten her anyway.

not really a ghost coon but we have treed it several times...... they gernally strike in the same area down in a river bottum i hunt... the coon goes the same way...... cross the river.......weve been able to go across logs when the river is low....or go git a boat when the river is high..... they tree it each time.....it gits to live cause we do not carry the gun across go git the dogs and back,,,,, the place across the river sold so we dont turn loose on that side any longer...was always a good race.......
That is one big coon! We don't grow em like that around here.
It's hard to have it both ways; let him go, or put him on the wall.
You probably did the right thing. It would have been bad if a car, or someone else got him. The dog did the job, and deserved his reward. In the end the dog won, and the coon lost.
I don't think it would have been the same, even if you had let him go. After seeing him, and knowing that he could be treed before he made it to the vines, it just wouldn't be the same. The magic would be gone.

coons were movin good last night for us to we treed 3 in just over and hour and half got wet in the meantime tho
thats kinda how i feel now. i had today to think about it and im glad i pulled the trigger. he gave me alot of good memories and now i got him. the hunts wont be forgotten and the dog did a fantastic job on the old critter. i think if he could talk he would have wanted to pull the trigger himself. lol.
like briar said there will be more ghost coons and smart old suckers that i can move onto now. plus if i would have driven by there and seen him smashed on the road i would have been mad for not taking him and hanging him on the wall.

You have just created a legend!!! Your kids and grandkids are going to LOVE to hear the story again and again and again as they see the proof on the wall. I know that will be on down the road, but you have something to look forward to. "Paw Paw tell us again about how you got that ghost coon". Congratulations to you and the hound.

Shoot em down!!!
If my dog trees them by himself I shoot em down, with no hesitation even at the feeder bucket spot, that's what there for to get the pup started unless your just content on treeing the same coon night after night,JMO there will be more coon I'm sure some coon been looking at that property for quite sometime just didn't have the heart to take that big boy ha ha he probably told the dogs old man's secret!!!LMOL
good job lets hear the rebel yell.

The Ghost
I had that same exact same problem with the exact same out come. Finally treed on a tree right next to the "jungle tree" and killed her. Still have the same problem on the same farm though, only in a different hollow. lol.
thats what im hoping for.....one of her babbies living in the same mess and starting all over again.

ghost
in the 80's ran one like that many nights, treed in the same huge oak every time. never could find him, STAYED AFTER HIM, till one night after looking for around 30 mins backed off tree and could barely see his back down between the big forks branching off from trunk, took him out. me, if i had it to do again, i'd leave him.
the ghost i remember good too, were the ones that ran and jumped out more than once, and the one's you saw big as life but could'nt shoot straight and while you reloaded they vanished in them huge trees. those were the good ole days.
remember when 5 or 6 different hunters would get together to run those ghost, blk tans, blues, walkers and reds , all them hounds running that coon, a solid roar. and it would still throw them hounds, sometimes. good times, hunting hard then.
A BLAST FROM THE PAST. THANKS AND GOD BLESS. GOOD HUNTING.

Heck with that. That is what hunting is all about. That would be like patterning and watching a big buck for 3 years and then when the time comes passing because he was just so cunning.
There will be other ghost coons, shoot the sucker when you have the chance.

Thats a nice coon.
I have one here that I call momma-ceta. She's a big one. Treed her once 4 years ago during the off season. I know where she has her kits. Then she's gone. Someday we'll tree her again. Then I'm still not sure if I'll shoot her.
