Lightfooted Lions in Alberta
"Raining Redticks"
I came up north to hunt with Brian and Rhino for a week or so. We caught a good one yesterday. When we got to the first tree the lion was up a big leaner, with Coby and Whiplash up the tree with him. Coby was a good 30 feet off the ground and right in the lions face. Whiplash was down the tree a bit from her and about 20 feet off the ground. About the time we got there things started getting crazy. The lion got nervous with us showing up and Coby trying to grab a hold of him. He decided it was time to leave, and in the process he nocked Coby out of the tree. She fell 30 feet and bounced with a loud "thump" as she hit the ground. We were sure that the fall had killed or seriously injured her. About 3 or 4 seconds after Coby had fell, Whiplash fell about 20 feet and we heard the second sickening "thump" of the day. I thought to myself, "man I sure hope it stops raining redticks soon."
Shortly after Whiplash hit the ground, the lion came running down the leaner and away he went with Throttle and Rev hot on his trail. Brian and I were scrambling to get to Coby and Whiplash to check them over and keep them from chasing the cat with broken body parts. I got a hold of Whiplash and she seem to be fine, so I turned her loose and she took off after the cat. Brian had a hold of Coby and was looking her over. She was holding her leg up and could hardly walk. Within a minute or so she was barking in the direction the lion had left. We started to walk the track with Coby on a leash. Within 30 yards she was barking and pulling on the leash wanting to go. Brian turned her loose and she left on the track like nothing had happened.
The lion only made it about 300 yards and was in a good tree this time. When we got there all the dogs were treeing good and we couldn't see anything wrong with the girls. We feel extremely lucky to have finished the hunt without any dead or busted up dogs. We're off tomorrow to look for another one. We might have a tough time topping this one.

Idaho Lightfoot Full Throttle, Idaho Lightfoot Rev, Idaho Lightfoot Whiplash, and Idaho Lightfoot Coby

Is
that cat missing an ear? He looks like he's had some battles in
his time. What would be his age?

Congratulations! That's one brute of a tom lion you have there....it makes me miss the good ol' days in Utah before there was a dog box in every driveway and the over the counter harvest objective days came along.....
ike
Green score.
He is A booner, 15 3/16 Green. Will have A better idea on the age once the skull is truly cleaned up. I did just some minimal work too get A green score. Will let you know in A couple days when I got it shined up as too roughly how old it is... He is not actually missing his ears but they have been ripped short due too fighting not being frozen. He also lost the very tip of his nose in A fight. And has A old set of scars from takin A paw in the ribs in A fight. Tell you what I would pay good money too even listen too, let alone actually watch that cat fight....

Congrats on one heck of a cat, since you said you weigh your cats thought would ask a question and in know way am I applying any thing bad. Yousee many people put up weights of cats and lots look hard to beleive but yours looks what would be expected. Yours also looks like it has a full belly and thats what I have been trying to find out when a cat makes a kill and gourges him self how much of the weight is deer/elk /moose or what ever prey Ive talked to a few biologists and guys that have been involved in studys and figure there could be 20 or 30 lbs of meat in afull gut but of course when doing a study the cats are kept alive. Just wondering your thoughts.
Also wondering about the gps collars since on your other thread you mentioned you were just trying them out. How did they worketc and does the cold effect them at all
Thanks for your time
The one important thing I've learned over the years is to keep it real.We started weighing cats on a scale way back when Dustin pulled a scale out of his pack after we took a large tom. Tired of all the guessing I guess. Now it has just became the normal thing to do.I think you are right with the weight fluctuation off of kills. I have seen cats gourge themselves. As far as the gps collars go they are alright. I sure wouldn't run just them. The range is just not there (1/2 to 3/4 of a mile). The cold doesn't seem to be a factor yet as far as I can see.

Very nice cat and dogs
Nice cat
LightFoot
I like the one I have.......................alot. Nice pics and always a pleasure to see the fruits of all your labors. These Lightfoot dogs are natural born hunters but they certainly didnt get to where they are without guidance. Good job promoting the line and a better job of the dogs promoting themselves.

Thanks everyone for the compliments.
We treed a female yesterday and let her go. Today we caught a nice tom. He jumped out of the tree twice on us before we could get close enough to catch the dogs up. Then he finally climbed high and stayed in the third tree.

Nice job on the Lions boys!Keep livin the dream.
Whiskey's been to 6 trees now Brian and is doing well.Starting to want to trail out and has seen a couple jump out of the tree and loved that although he's not treeing yet.We have not yet had a tree that he could really get a good look at the cat and lock on but I keep feeding him the wood and it will happen.I'll keep you posted.
I finally got around to going through the rest of the pictures we took while I was up north hunting with Brian. These are some of the pics that I thought turned out well. They are in no particular order.
