Purina Hi Pro

Been feeding Hi-Standard 26-18 and was thinking of giving Hi Pro a try. Wondering how other people like it.

Always a big topic on here and alot of opinions. I have fed purina for years and do well with it. Some on here says it's junk.

What I feed is based 100% on performance. I am one of those guys that believe what you feed a dog can make a huge impact on your dogs performance and have given many different brands an honest try over the years.

I feed Purina HiPro.

Posted by Mizzou on 10-02-2008 01:47 PM:

Just look at the ingredients and make your decision then, no brainer----Hi-Standard.

purina dog chow

The dog chow works a little better for me, but like elvis said, some work better on different dogs. Overall, I have found purina to be best suited for me, I also like blackgold but its just so hard to find without driving 30 miles one way. Mine still seem to do the best off of purina.

I feed Purina Hi-Pro, you can not bet Hi-Pro in my opinion...you do not have to feed as much food....the dogs stay healthy.....they maintain good muscle tone, even when not hunted every night....stools are solid and not messy in the kennel....so until I find a better food for the money.....it is Purina Hi-Pro for me....on occasion I will buy a bag of Dog Chow, and switch for a bag....just to keep things interesting, I believe dogs like humans like a little change every now and then!

I also have fed both brands, have not fed Hi-Pro in several years but all I ever got was yellow soft stools from the Hi-Pro.

with the Hi-Standard i have noticed clean slick glossy coats, approx. one hard stool per day and my dogs stamina in the woods is excellent. There is no comparison between the size of these 2 companies, but I will tell you one thing for sure---if you call purina, you will get a receptionist who knows nothing but will promise you a call back at a later date----you call hi-standard and you will get to talk to the owner. That in itself means alot to me.

purina dog chow is a corn based dog food and research has proven corn is not digestable by dogs therefore most passes right through the dog, however purina hi pro and a few of there other brands are decen foods.
for some reason i have ried many of he good brands and i keep going back to diamond for all my wrking hounds i also bough some bags of hi sandard while in ohio i liked it but i's hard o ge where i live.
people have to realize dog chow was formulaed o compee wih supermarke dog foods n to compete wih he beter feeds bu laelty there prices make it a poor buy as with a better food you feed a lot less food and dog chow then costs more than a better food.
i have heard this food or that food produces loose stools well the best food available will do this if the change is not gradual

Purina HI Pro is the sorriest dog food I've ever tried.I think one of the main ingrediants in it is ex-lax.

Posted by larry tuttle on 10-03-2008 07:09 PM:

It's very expensive....Even with the coupon......

My thoughts also......

I have tried just about every brand there is.............I would just as soon feed Ol' Roy as feed anything with Purina attached to it, the Hi-Pro went thru my dogs just like it was Ex-Lax...........

I am feeding some of my dogs Sportmix and 2 of my hounds are getting Diamond Extreme Athelete.............very happy with both of these feeds, the Diamond feed I am using is top-notch stuff.............Tim

I have fed the hi- pro and dog chow for about 2 years and my dogs do very well on them both. THE HI-PRO tends to be less stool in the kennels which makes it nice for clean up. With the purina point program you can get the $7 off coupons off a bag, and with the price today, makes a world of difference. I am paying $21.84 for a 50# bag of hi-pro and $21.37 for a 55# dog chow at SAMS.

I have NOT had any luck with Hi-Pro or puppy chow. I have had two pups out of different dogs get rickets while feeding puppy chow and I know of several others that had the same problem.

I feed and recommend Diamond!! You can feed less, therefore Diamond is priced about the same as anything else. You can hunt a dog hard and they will keep a shiny slick coat and look good.

I've been feeding Hi Pro for a few years and have got along with it OK. I've raised several pups on it without any problems.

I'll feed Pro Plan to a dog if I'm pushing it harder.

I used to feed Diamond but haven't bought a bag since they used some moldy grain that killed a dogs. Maybe they got that problem corrected but I just haven't had a reason to change.

There are several good dog feeds out there, and almost all of them are better than dog chow or hi-pro. If people would just look around and not buy the "easiest' dog food to find, they would really be surprised just how many good dog foods are out there. Hi-Standard is not the only good dog food on the market, just satisfies me.

You don't get $7.00 off a bag....Actually 8 cents a pound for Purina Dog Chow or $4.40 off a bag for a 55LB bag..
