?? Best way to make a coon look in a woolly tree ??

I have my own opinions on this subject, but was wondering what methods work best for other folks. Maybe I'm wrong in my method, wouldn't be the first time. I sure want to cut down on the circle points. Have seen / shot a good percentage of coons bymyself or with just a couple of us with minimum light, but had an obscene amout of circle points this weekend with 3 folks shining the tree.

I'm talking about trees full of vines, lots of leaves, sometimes pines. Oh yeah tall too. Lots of thick spots where you gotta make the coon look.

And it has to be legal in a comp hunt. All dogs treed and not all dogs treed.

A method other than owning the first couple minutes too, or not hunting till the leaves are off...

I was told a story about that happened in he early 70's!

A nite hunt cast that had 3 blind mice(wouldn't see a fellows coon) he told them it was in plain sight eventhough in a 20 foot cedar tree.He pulled out a cigarette lighter and lit it on fire.(Not recommended now adays).coon was seen plainly as it came out the top and bailed out .They scratched him but he made his point.I've found a squaller in the right hands is the best method to get one to look.

I've found that some will look and some won't no matter what you do. I squalled at one on a limb one time and it never moved while another in the same tree jumped.

I have my best luck just barely touching the squaller a few light notes and real quiet.

I don't know if it's "legal" or not....

I used to have one of the ICOM R-10 tracking units. It is really a radio receiver that could receive just about any radio frequency...Including AM and FM radio signals.

I found that I could toot, blow, and scream with a squaller...clap my hands, squeak with my lips...and see nothing...

But crank up some twangy ole country music on that scanner...and every coon in the tree would peek to see what that strange noise was...

So, I'd suggest a battery powered AM/FM portable radio...tuned to the local country station

(they really like Hank Jr.)

Oakridge, that's a good one we'll have to try it!

We get a lot of coons to look by squalling lightly and shining with a red lense....I would say it gets 95% of them to look....

Best way to make one look is to beat on the side of the tree with a stick. Works alot of the time when they won't look at a squaller, vine pulling, etc.

I see alot of folks say blow the squaller soft,I always had better luck blowing it louder,I think the brand of squaller matters alot too,I have my favrorite and don't like anything else.I know the dim light helps and I always shine with a dim light first.If they won't look I try to find them with a spotlight.I also know you can't see a coon if he ain't there and after a couple times with no coons seen I would be correcting a dog.I have been on casts where dogs got circled and it was pretty obvious no coon was there.Even with the leaves on you should be able to find the majority of your coons.If they are there

I should've added in my post that shining with a red lense/squalling usually only works when there is a coon in the tree to begin with lol....

I sometimes get lucky by covering my light and uncovering it fast like a strobe light for about 5 seconds. Doesn't work everytime but it has worked in the past.

I have had good luck with alternating squaller's. Typically I will begin by blowing one that is higher pitched then swithing to a deeper toned one...My choices have been a Timothy Ball or a Mity Max then switch over to an old fashioned Olt (the black plastic style). Often this switch to a new/different sound will tempt their curiousity and cause them to look.

Leaves are full on down here in Georgia. I've only just now started hunting since it's cooled off. Been to 8 trees. Saw a coon or multiple coons in all 8 trees. It sure helps to find a coon if there's a coon in the tree to begin with.

treed one in a pin oak the other night found his whole body, head to tail but never could get him to look but straight up. He thought he was hid good though.lol If it wasn't for being on the edge of a corn field I probably would have never seen him.

Oak Ridge, you're a litte behind times. Get an i-pod and download the songs that work and you won't have to wait for the radio sation to play the right tunes:-) Better yet, download them as ringtones on your cell phone. Ha la la la la ha ha.

as a last resort, and if its possible, get the dogs and walk away from the tree a hundred yards and look back . ive scored on many many tight eyed coon this way.

Stand back and see as much of the tree as you can and clap over and over as loud as you can. That helps me a lot of the times. Trott.

elvis your right that works alot. we treed one tonight we seen it coming into the tree. it took us over an hour to finaly find that coon at the tree. if we did not see that coon on the way in we would have thought it was slick & this tree was big but not that big & not really that full of leaves. some times they just wont look !!
