hounds barking in the kennel

Here is the dilema I'm faced with. I raise, hunt and trial beagles. They are quiet in the kennel 90-95% of the time. My son is 14 and we got him a Walker pup this spring, built him his own separate kennel and dog house. The hound is about 8-9 months old right now.I live approximately 100 feet off the road which is about where the other houses are built. My pole barn and kennel is about another 100 feet behind the house. My kennel is off the ground with the houses inside the barn and runs outside in the back. I have a neighbor (uncle) that lives about 200 yards down the road and is about 300 yards off the road putting his house behind the kennel a good bit. I have a tri-tronics bark collar on the walker and is set on the maximum stimulation level. I dont hear the hound bark much during the day or in the evenings before I go to bed. If I do I use the hose and he will quit. My dad lives on the other side of me and says once in awhile he will hear the dog late at night barking non stop. He has opened his window to see if he can tell what he is barking at and a few things we've discovered is he will bark at coyotes yipping/howling, other dogs barking, cats in the yard and deer passing by. Most of these I cannot help. My neighbor (uncle) sleeps with their windows open through the summer and says the hounds keep him up at night. I just put landscape fabric around his kennel on three side in hopes he cannot see passing animals. The barking issue has put a big strain on the family and I'd like any suggestions out there about what I can do to make a walker quiet in the kennel. I don't want to have to sell him to keep family peace but may have to. I guess living in the country these days means you have the comfort of the outdoors with city expectations. : (

a cheap little red rider BB gun to the rump works but some people may not like that method.

get a tri-tronics exp system. turn it wide open and bust him good. that normally works. if he barks constant, get you a piece of hose pipe and work on his rear. he'll shut up, or bite you. round here they learn fast not to bite the hand that feeds them.

TIghten that ciollar up on his neck sounds like the bark colar isnt hitting him or it isnt strong enough...........

CHECK TO SEE THAT it's adjusted right on It's neck

Check It's every few day's to see that It stay's adjusted

I still say If the unit is good, and It don't stop the barking get rid of the dog.

at the kennel .Plug in the house and cut on when they get loud,and when they get queit turn off.Repeating this will help every time they start up.

There are several things for you to consider. One is a dog barks because it is bored. Each and every dog has a different energy level. Many strains of walkers are very high energy dogs. Just look at the ads that say wired 440. If your dog is barking you may want to try to hunt it more, or provide another form of excercise such as roading it every evening that you don't hunt it.

Second you need a means of making the dog mind. I use both the tritronics and a bark collar when I need too. Dogs must mind me. I can not stand it when a dog does not mind. I teach all my pups starting the moment that I start weaning them. The first and most important command is No. When ever a pup does something that is beyond the rules I grab it by the scruff of the neck pull it slightly off the ground and give a light shake with the command No. A puppy understands that form of discipline and will quickly associate the No command as you are past a rule boundary.

Fewer commands are better. Right now we use No, Sit, Stay, Up, In, Heal, and Behind. The most used command is No. When I say No it doesn't matter what my dogs are doing they will immediately stop. I use the No command for when a dog is barking too much. When you are around the house I would use a regular tritronics collar. Find out the proper stimulus level. You should see very little reaction from the stimulus when applied to the dog. Apply the stimulus immediately following the No command. This is to serve as a freindly reminder to the dog that No means stop! Stay away from the higher levels. The higher levels may cause a flight or fight response that negates the learning process. At night when you are sleeping I would use the bark collar. If you don't have a tritronics, I highly recommend them.

Now here is the "if" part your dog should start to get the idea after a few sessions. If you are providing an adequate level of excercise per that individual dog's needs (tiring him out) and he still isn't minding you may have a stupid dog.

At that point I would suggest you try to find your son a dog with a lower energy level. In 35 years, I have had 2 dogs that were just too stupid, and they don't live here any more.

I have seen the bb gun method result in a gun shy dog.

then finally just yell out the window be quite and...thats it done.
worked for me.

walkers bark when its time to be fed, when ya leave and when ya get home.

I've got a Redbone that does the same thing, she barks when cats walk by or another dog. She has the Tri tronics bark collar turned up to 5 also, it used to work on her. Now she just barks, then yelps every time she gets shocked. I'm getting to my wits end.

Has anybody tried the citronella bark collars, where they get a spray of citronella in te face when they bark?

Thanks for the replies so far. To answer a few questions.....I've bought the tri-tronics bark collar. (best one you can buy) Its tight on him and is working. Its also set on level 5 which is the highest. One thing I don't like is the collar rubs all the hair off his neck and looks raw. I've also got him to be quiet all day and evening just by telling him "no". Hes quite well minded. As far as burning him when hes barking at night, I can't hear him. I sleep with the air on and windows down. Plus my wife and I sleep like rocks. So as far as shocking him in the middle of the night, I would if I heard him. I asked my uncle to call when hes barking so I can correct him. I may have a few nights of that and he may quit. Who knows. I'm going to keep trying things because my son raised the dog from a pup and has done a good job with him so far. Its those few nights a week that he barks an hour or two. Maybe I need to sell the neighbors and keep the dog. : )

Thats not a bad idea. Thanks. I'd still like the call just so I know hes barking. I'm TRYING to fix the problem and would like to take care of it myself if possible. But buying a one dog collar and giving the controller to him is a good idea. I have a Tri-Tronics 3 dog system but would be a pain to get the controller everytime from him to run dogs. I run 4-6 times a week at times.

Barking at the house is probably the one thing on earth that just trips my trigger. I am normally pretty laid back but if I drive up to the house and have to listen to dogs barking at me I am going to do whatever it takes to stop it. I have done everything from bark collars, to water, to a piece of hose to dragging them out of the dog house and using whatever.

You just need to balance the punishment with the mentality of the dog.

Sheeps right..A BB gun works woonders!!!!! I have one now and all I have to do is shake the BBs and he remembers to be quite lol.... It dont make them gun shy at all either..

GA Dawg,

I have seen it make a dog gun shy on two separate ocassions. I know because I had to work the dogs back to stand for a .22. When i asked them if they thought what made the dog gun shy both responded that they used a bb gun to make the dog shut up.

I actually had the EXACT SAME problem about a month or so ago..when i moved my hounds to my new house..yes on occasion my hounds will bark in the kennel but no not non stop..well my uncle who thinks he is Bill Jordan and owns every square inch of DEER and land on the mtn comes and puts up a sign on my kennel WHILE I AM HUNTING threating my hounds..NEVER BEFORE had i heard a word out of him TO MY FACE..after putting up my servalince system and talking to the deputy sheriff..then procceded to having a few choice words for him and his deer =D..havant heard a cross word out of him since...let your little boy keep his dog if thats what he wants..if you can break him from barking good..if you cant they will eventually get over it..i know you dont want to start a family fued..but they need to take your boy into consideration as well (i know you have)..but i was just sayin thats the way i handled my situation

if if's and but's were candy and nuts it would be Christmas year round.

I've used the BB gun but the dogs never see it, I'm in the house . I have made several shy of the bedroom widow coming open.
If he only barks at night when he sees things put him in you dog box or in the garage where he can't see everything. If he's to good to get rid of house break him or a crate in the basement at night. But if nothing works keep the peace and get rid of him. One dog causing big problems isn't worth it. On the other hand make sure you haven't got a coon fooling around out there at night. It's happened here before.

The problem with bark collars, at least at my house, is that the dogs know when they are wearing them. A dog should'nt have to wear one all the time. It should know not to bark. I have a young female that wears one and if you take it off she will start barking before I get back to the house. Larry is right the dogs have to know they are doing wrong. I will break her just like I break all my other dogs. With a Tri-Tronics Trashbreaker. I set my dogs up with the kids. Young dogs cant stand it when kids are playing near their pen. They will bark every time. And every time the dog I am working on starts barking I yell Hush!! and put the juice to it. Dont get to carried away and do it over and over all in one day and expect to break the dog. Its a learning process. I only use the shocker for a couple of days then I just use the tone. After about a week when they hear Hush! They will hit the back of their dog house so hard it almost rolls over. Some dogs need a refresher from time to time, most figure out and very seldom do you hear them bark at my house or anywhere else as far as that goes. Dogs that bark in the box, or tied to a tailgate at a hunt are just as annoying as a yapping dog at home. Lack of disipline is all it is. This is just they way I do it. There are lots of ways that will work. I kinda like the BB gun deal. Not for my hounds, but for my wifes yapping lap dog!
