Hey guys here's a tip that just might save your dogs life. Spreading lime on the ground in and around where your
dogs stay will help control insects and will eliminate parvo
in your soil. About ten years back I lost 3 pups to parvo I religiously take care of my dogs and knew that something
must be wrong. I was told by an old timer that some pups
were more susceptible to parvo/corona than others even
though they all are from the same litter he told me that more than likely the ground was infested with parvo he said this happens from the other dogs feces and urinating on the ground then the pups come along and are exposed to the soil and thus contract the disease. He said to buy some lime and spread it about liberally and that is exactly what I did and to this day I've not had any problems with parvo/corona and very seldom do I see an abundance of insects.....flies of course will land on the dogs feces but if you sprinkle lime on the feces that will be the end of that. The lime will also totally eliminate any foul smells that might occur from feces and urine and anything else. You can buy lime where I live at the 'Farmer C0-0P' it cost $18.00 a ton....the lime will also give you the greenest grass you've ever seen. I'm not going to say the lime is a substitute for a vet but in my opinion it might keep you from having to use one if you give your dogs all their required shots. Also the insects when they come in contact with lime will automatically try to lick the lime off their feet and when they do it kills them. I hope this tip helps someone.

I started using lime several years ago for urine odors. After a while, I noticed I wasn't seeing any fleas or ticks. As for the flies, It stood to reason that with the smells gone, the flies had no reason to hang around.

I don't know about it killing virus' like parvo but for fleas, ticks and flies, it works.

Hey Jeff
You have some good advice lime works reel good but once a month i spray my lots with colox and water then lime the lots again. My vet said the colorx will keep the ground parisites killed and help keep the fleas and flys killed down and at bay.

We do the same thing...Spray once a month with bleach and then lime...We try to do that right after the monthy worming, just to have a schedule on it...We always do this before moving a hound from one pen to the other or bringing in a new one. Don't know if it really helps the disease thing, , but it gives us a piece of mind that we did something. I do know it keeps smells down and that we do not have a bad flea and tick problem.

Lime was something we always used when we boarded our horses at riding clubs...It really did help on the horse urine and smells. But EVERYBODY had to do there part or it just didn't work.

Thanks for the advise! I was just complaining about the smell of my dog kennels (and I keep the poopy cleaned up). I'm gonna try the bleach and then lime. When I build my indoor kennels..sounds like this will really help w/the smell! I'm gonna have to find out where to get it around here.

Do you dalute the bleach any?

Hey Ryann,

We get the lime in a pretty big size bag at our local feed store...I think you can also get it from the co-op.

I do not dilute the bleach. I think most folks do, but I just put it in a garden sprayer, full strength and start spraying. Not sure of the effects, but I am a heavy bleach user on everything possible anyway.

Thanks Sabrina! I was told before not to use bleach cause it would hurt the dogs since of smell. But I thought that was hard to believe. I am a heavy bleach user in the house!! Makes since to use it on the dogs stuff too!!!

I bleach my pens too!!! Let em dry good and put down lime and some wood pellets I get from TSC. The pellets are for horse stalls but work good in the kennel. They soak up moisture real good. And they keep the dogs clean and smelling good.

Wood pellets

I usually use cedar shavings but prefer the pine shavings because
of the turpentine smell. Fleas and ticks will not stay around anything that smells of turpentine very long. The only problem is
the shavings don't hold the smell for long. I never have used the
wood pellets but I believe they would clean up easier. Thanks for the idea.

I had to switch to pine shavings in the dog houses cause one of mine is allergic to cedar. OR I can get the cedar that doesn't have the oil on it, not sure what its called, but its expensive and the pine works!!!

I've always been told that the shavings would give a dog respiratory problems but I've never had any problems.

I know your not posta put Chickens or Rabbits on Cedar because of respitory problems. Not sure about dogs. The reason for the rabbits is the urine makes to much ammonia in the cedar, or at least thats what I was TOLD..lol. I just started away from it w/them. I just got two Jack Russell Terriers and they were on Pine and pine shavings in the kennels too. I dont have a roof over my kennels YET, but will have soon and that is what I'm gonna use..saw dust from saw mill.

I've heard the same thing about lime but had forgotten. Thanks for bringing it up!

My vet says that bleach is not real effective against parvo on porous surfaces (especially dirt) but is good if you know the exact area but still better to dig up the dirt and remove.

Vets agree that 30 parts water to 1 part bleach works good as a parvo killer. For ground, I'd go full strength just because of the porous thing but that's just me.

Also, bleach is NOT good for your dogs and they will try to lick it so be sure to rinse good after using it on surfaces they may lick or your dogs/other animals could get sick.

Good point....dogs do like to lick everything. I wonder if would help or hurt putting a salt block in the kennel.

Salt would make them drink more water...but I dont know of the positive effect salt would have on a dog? To much salt can cause dehydration..you have to watch giving dogs salt cured ham bones..cause they can have sezures from to much salt.

As a rule I never give any of my dogs pig meat....I've always heard that undercooked pork would give them worms(tryclea?).
I'm not sure of the spelling.

Pure bleach when used on concrete or other hard surfaces can severely burn your dogs feet. Just keep that in mind when working with it, even lightly diluted it can do the same thing. It will not work efficiently towards parvo or other diseases on dirt or grass and should not be used as a replacement for vaccines.

Cedar is an irritant to dogs prone to allergies, so take care when using cedar chips to check and make sure each dog does not have any sniffles, wheezing, blisters, or red skin irritations.

We get a huge bag of popular shavings manufactured by COX (haha, no it's not ours) at the co-op for under $4 a bag. Each bag will do 3 10x12 pens once every two weeks during winter, or last longer during dry months.

The lime is a great tool for odor and insects control, and it does have the added benefit of being eco-friendly and promoting grass growth with no harmful side effects that are found with bleach and other chemicals.

Raw pork is a great transmitter of intestinal worms. However, raw beef, chicken and veggies when handled appropriately are GREAT additives to your dogs diet. We usually put our pregnant females on a diet that is at least 1/2 raw meat and veggies. Used to do them all that way, but as the numbers grew so did the food bill!
