heck i know of some big stud dogs that need help some times. The best thing to do is help or put them in a pen together and theyll get the job done.

Aight guys, this ain't a bench show and I ain't a hound. Keep ya eyes where they need to be.
Dont know how?
Question: Do you have to teach a duck to swim? Do you have to teach a chicken to scratch? Its nature give him some time he like everthing else in nature will work it out on his own. I have seen some males that were hight challenged and could not reach a female but trust me they know how.

it helps if the female is ready to breed also.
YEP
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT.
is there something to give them to give them more drivebreeding
breeding
I have one question is the female in her 11th-13th day of heat? if she isn't then he'll try but won't get the job done , on the other hand if she is in her 11th - 13th day and is smelling pretty ripe than tie her off on a couple of cross ties and give him a helping hand like these other guys have suggested he may just need a little giudenst.

Maybe he's just intimidated by a female that knows what she wants and isnt afraid to go after it!?
I'd give my left testicle for a female like that!
That comment was made in jest, but it has some serious merrit to it as well. I tried to breed a female I have to a male I drove 8 HOURS to get her to and he wouldnt have anything to do with her and she chased him all over the pen for days! I ended up having her artificially inseminated and even that didnt work. On this last heat, I just bred her to my male dog, (hes a better hound than the one 8 hrs away anyway) dont know if she stuck this time or not but I do know if she didnt it aint his fault!

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
I have been in the dog business for over 20 yrs coonhuntin for 15...we have over 250 dogs at our kennel such as yorkies, maltese, labs, etc not all coonhounds, so I have seen it all....seen many males that worth a lick in the stud pen and just couldnt get the job done...seen a lot of females the same way even if they were in their 11th-13th day in their cycle they still woulding allow the male to mount her naturally...well when you have a business as large as this dogs that dont breed such as Yorkies and Maltese that sell for over $600 a pup are definately going to get all the help i can give to get the job done...Here is what I do at times with larger dogs (coon hounds) that don't cooperate.....
First I have this wood platform that is much like a sawhorse that has sturdy legs...I place the female on top of that and the platform acts as support for the female under belly and chest....This keeps the female from trying to sit down when the male is mounting her...You must make sure you tie the female down to it as well to keep her from moving as much as you can....Then with the male that seems interested but just jumps on for a few seconds then jumps off or can't find the "hole" here is when I do...Once the female is done tied up to the platform I let the male try to mount her naturally but when it doesnt work I have to do some dirty work...First I put some Vasaline on the female...then once the male is excited and trys to mount the female again I help hold him on the female and give his man hood a guidence and once "we" get to the "hole" the vasaline makes it so easy that you can push on the male dogs rear and he will go inside the female with ease and then they get locked....
Sorry so wordy but it is a lot easier to understand if you can see it first hand...If you need them females bred by this male you may want to take some tips from me and give it a try yourself and see how it works out....Notice these are rare occasions that I "help" the dogs.

So many things come to mind...
... has he ever gotten beat up by a female for attempting to breed? Sometimes, especially if they are young and you pair them with an overly assertive/aggressive female, it will scar them mentally.
... Are they of equal body size? One being much taller than the other will cause issues without help.
... If he's just a ditzy virgin you may need to physically guide the penis into the vagina for him when he tries thrusting. (make sure dog is muzzled first, even sweet ones can bite when you attempt this while other's don't mind at all)
... The female may not be ready. Is she still bleeding? Days can be good guesses but you can get more accuracy by swabbing the females vulva. When this turns from red to straw colored, she is ready. She needs to be in standing heat for him to have enough desire. Is she 'flagging' (teasing, backing up, lifting tail, etc)
... Leaving them alone can sometimes help, especially with a male who isn't yet experienced enough to have confidence.
... If the female is arguing with him over the issue, yet is in standing heat, you may need to hold her for him and maybe even go so far as to muzzle her. If she's trying to get away, only the most confident and 'hormonally possessed' males will still grab hold for dear life and get a tie.
... Some males are very quick. Is he entering her? Did he ejaculate? My sister has a 3 second cavalier but he still produces large litters.
... Don't feed him just prior to breeding time. This can make him sluggish. Feed him about an hour after they breed for the day.
... If they are not squabbling, allow them to run around, play, get to know each other, let him court the girl. Some like a little romance time before the big event.
... And if all else fails, I find that bringing out another male who is super eager to get the job done (both males on leashes, get a helper!) or even just parading the pair in front of the other males enclosure will spice things up enough to get him kicked into gear. Like throwing a not-so-tasty food item down. If the dog is alone, they leave it. If there is several, they are gonna usually bicker over who gets rights to it.
