News...
I got some news for you that your gonna like. All leopards must be able to tree their own coon ( or other tree game, excluding grinners) before their are allowed to breed. That should make your search rather easy.
If you are in the Southern part of MI. or don't mind driving a little you should give Ron Ganus a call. I will PM you his number. He lives near South Bend, IN.
Dan

this is not putting any individual down. a few years back me and a friend of mine made up our mind to get us some leapard's. well we started searching tryin dogs from 5 to be exact' top breeders now we were trying 2000 to 5000 dollar priced dogs. and would allways ask em to bring along there best that was not for sale' and have yet to see one tree a coon half way right i know there's some out there i'm sure. but you'll be waybetter off tryin to find one of another breed. i spent enough on traveling. to buy a real coondog. plus all together i'll bet we tried 30 dogs all together not all by big breeders i'd say this is the worst breed of dogs out there by % even worse than a REDBONE.
im a mt cur man but this is the goofiest thing i ever heard.thanks ron
whats so goofy Triker?
ive hunted with a few here in michigan and they were tree dogs get in the dark.thanks ron
thats good triker. i wished i'd of seen at least one do that. if it would hunt it was a loose treedog if it was a solid treedog it had to be walked over a track or would jack a track back and forth 30 minutes before it would tree. and in my true oppinion id say there aint one true full leapord cur out there that will go huntin strike its own coon run it one way. locate and stay treed solid. and will pay someones gas to northern ky to show me one. and will enjoy ourselves either way and i'll show ya plenty of coon. great hunting just hunt one dog at a time coondog style.
No dog in the hunt
i dont have a dog in this hunt, but ill have to say dont expect a cur to be a hound, if you want that then you had better find you somthing with longer ears and tail , Cur dogs are very versital in what they will do , but lets be honist most people hunt curs because there not like hounds . i.e not as cold nosed ,not as far raingeing in there hunting (there are Exceptions i know)
but when you try a cur remember thats what they are and if thats what you want Good jmop
Ray&louie i agree 100% but theres certain things like not millin around going huntin alone. not deep but go huntin. that there suppose to do. regardless of breed.
I live in Southern WV in Logan county should be pretty close to you.You bring your best dog and I'll show you what these Leopards can do anytime you want to go.My number is (304)946-4612.I work a swing shift but after this weekend I'll be back on dayshift can go any night.
Doug
Doug , one thing you have to realise about most if not every dog alot of there falts and bad behavior is man made . if you want a cur dog to do what you want it to do dont wait untill some one else has taught it what they let it do or wanted it to do. one of the easyest Dogs you will ever find to train will be a cur dog but make no mistake about it , just like a child it needs to learn it early in life i.e puppy not more than id say 4 to 6 months old .
Louie is a 6 year old Kemmer Cur , he will hunt med to wide mostly med , but thats ok thats what i like . if i walk with him he will hunt ahead of me and check back often if i let him out of the box set down and give him time to do his thig he will disaper in a few and ill hear him treed shortly . he labors to please me
another thing
Cur dogs are very Perticular around straingers for the most part so that may have played a big part in why those dogs didnt do to well , not an excuss, just a thought and from past experiances
fella's don't be mistaken. about me. i know cur dogs i've won nkc world sq hunts owned the dog that won the leopard world hunt about 6 year ago won the pkc nationals' 2nd in there word hunt' second in the nationals won siver cup classic. not to mention about 10.000 with 2 dogs in pkc. so i know a solid dog. and i know theres good in all but i myself have never seen a decent leopard includeing the world ch leopard i owned. jason sounds like you got some good leopards. i would'nt drive across the road to see a good leopard to me they don't exist.
Doug
Try you a good Kemmer
maybe even a Steak if you can find one that looks like a cure dog opsss did i say that
Ray the dog i did most of the winning with was out of Mt Jackson and a Pistol Pete female. he was a good one.
WOW
I'm looking for a solid coondog. Should I stick with my walkers?

i'd say you bettter stick to your walkers sir. because i'd say unless you have very low standards you'll be dissapointed. and broke. at the time i was looking i just wanted a coondog nothin fancy just solid.
just because Doug dosent like Leopards is no reason for you not to try one. I took a chance on a Leopard Cur and I am glad I did.
if Ron dosent have anything, Dan Minten in NW Iowa that might have a pup or two around.
hey Doug I'll take you up on that offer too LOL
The fact is there are some great leopard curs out there. As good as any. If you didn't find one.... that doesn't mean they aren't out there. I have had a few and they were good solid dogs that would tree their own coon. I didn't like the ones I saw because they were overly shy and just soft in the head. Some people like that kind of dog, I do not. You say you spent all this money and drove all over.... Sounds like you were looking in all the wrong places. Say you saw 100 leopard curs.... is that enough to base such a strong opinion on. I can guarantee you there are leopard curs out there you would love to own. I hope you find one that will suit you... if not try something else.

Rockcreek i didnt even try 100 about 30 to be honest but these were very highly recomended leopard men and there stud dogs. there own personal best that was'nt for sale. well they were all very below average in ability' hunt and tree. they were all very weak treedogs. and your exactly right there are some good ones out there. but good luck finding them that was my point to the author of this post. but a couple of these guys have took it personal. rightfully so if they got what they say they have. i seriously doubt they do. but i'd say they honestly beleive they do. there was a time it did'nt take much to satisfy me either.
Honisty
Doug , you sound like an honist strait shooting man and thats a great thing in the world of Hounds and hunting Dogs , I think your problem is like mine with hounds , you know what a Good dog of any Breed should do and thats what you expect of it. there is nothing wrong with haveing High expectations ,especialy when people are Hanging *High price tags* on what they have!
You like Me have hunted with the best and you will not settle for substandards , we need our *quote* Breeders to have those same High standards and then you will see the Higher qality Curs & Hounds produced . Keep looking *bestewarts* maybe you will find somthing that you like i hope so , its a lot of fun to have somthing that you like and are proud to show to others
here's a offer to the few fella's whos took a personal ofence to this post. come to northern Ky and i'll pay for you a couple nights in a nice motel' feed you well and buy your gas. and will have a ball treein coon. if you show me a coon dog i'll get on here and apologise and tell that i finally seen a nice leopard coon dog. you let me know when your comeing i hunt every night. my guarantee to you is will have a good time' either way i just don't beleive a good leopard exist. now Doogie thats my offer to YOU and any one else. when ya comein fella's
